Long story short..
Sold my 21' Cobia 210 Walkaround at the beginning of the year to an Aussie. Had sellers remorse.
Looked all over to try and find a replacement with no luck. Remembered a ratty old Pro-Line in a neighbors yard rotting away, that had been there for 6 years. Ended up being a low hour one owner boat. Made the neighbor a deal and brought it home. After a few months of work it went from

The thread over here on The Hull Truth details it all. It cleaned up real good.
http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-for ... -boat.html (http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/355751-price-check-aisle-12-neglected-low-hour-boat.html)
The Family didnt really care for the Pro-Line. We really missed the old Walkaround, since we used the Cuddy so much. Not to mention the deck space..So I flipped the Pro-Line and made a few grand..
I made just enough cash to find a project boat for the winter. After looking at a few dozen rotten old boats, I lucked out and found a 1999 Aquasport 215 Explorer that was right up my alley. It's been sitting a year or two and needs tank pumped, carbs cleaned, and a TON of TLC.
I love the way this boat is laid out. It has a ton of storage for a 21' Walkaround. The cabin is well thought out as well. Looking forward to making this one look good again. Engine is a Johnson 200 with low hours. Trailer is a Tandem Axle Torsion, with all stainless hardware..
I've only had a chance to do some pressure washing so far. There had been a foot or so of standing water in the cabin, for a LONG time, so needless to say the headliner was brown. 3 hours worth of pressure washing later and it's good again. I wish I would have gotten a before pic..

Anyhoo, that's where I'm at. I'll try and document making this old girl nice again.

UncleBob!
That is awesome! That 23 Sport looks brand new, I KNOW there was some hard work put into her!
The 215, I love that the original cabin bolsters are still there. I remember that upholstery pattern, and it's been a few years...
The 200 will do you fine. IIRC, 225 was the max O/B, and the I/O version got the 5.0 Merc or Volvo, right around 220 HP...
Welcome sir! A far cry from THT over here!
-
Thanks Bob.
Yea, that Pro-Line was a fun project. Lots of elbow grease making it purdy again. But the Mold and Mildew seemed to preserve the Gel-Coat. It didnt even need a wet sanding. Just a bunch of compound and polish..
For the AS, all of the original cushions are all there as well, and suprisingly, are pretty clean, considering the sewage that was just underneath them for who knows how long. My 6 year old thought that pattern was really cool. Said he didnt know boats came with 'Camoflage'. :)
Mechanically she doesnt need much other than fuel system refurb.
Oh, I did want to ask you if you knew the length/size of the lines for the steering? Apparently it came from the factory with the plastic lines...
I dig this boat. I cant wait to get her ready.
-
Wow, you still have the extruded hard lines that WC tried to get away with for years (can't be used where exposed to UV). They paid a ton in warranty claims trying to save some bucks...
Think about the lengths, IIRC. About 4' from the helm pump down to the rigging tube, another 15' aft, then another 6' to allow for proper bends and routing. I'm betting 24 footers would be right...
-
Thanks! I cant imagine why someone would think plastic steering lines was a good idea.

Thanks! I cant imagine why someone would think plastic steering lines was a good idea.
Bob, the Teleflex extruded lines are perfectly acceptable in closed environs, i.e. I/Os and I/Bs, or where a builder will use them to the transom, then connect through b/head fittings to the reinforced flexable hoses we all know and love. I just did a Simrad auto pilot using that same extruded line, all the lines are inside the console, away from UV. The extruded lines are rated to 1000 PSI, just like the hoses, but they can't take UV...

Unclebob, welcome!
Lewis (Slvring) brought your THT thread to our attention the other night...it was excellent. You got a terrific job, hat's off to you!
Looking forward to your continued membership here :thumright:

Happy to be here! I've lurked for years, this is my second Aquasport, the first one didnt work out too good. Always been a fan of Aquasport boats, especially the vintage 'glass.
What some of you guys go through bringing the old ones back is awe inspiring. :salut:
-
Welcome back aboard Bob. :salut:
I read your thread on THT and it's good to see you over here.
I too have wondered about the plastic lines but it appears the one's Aqua used on my 91 are still holding up after twenty years.
Go figure. :?
-
welcome aboard Bob!look forward to your input :salut:
-
Kinda neat, Bob's been on here since '05...one of the originals! Happy to have you aboard? Hell, he should be saying that to me!
-
Uncle Bob I read your thread over on THT. The links for the finished 23 were not working so I didn't get to see the fished pics. Looks great! I'm working on a little Sea Rayder jet boat that has been sitting so I know what you went thru. Welcome back to the Aquasport family!

I fixed all those picture links just now, sorry. I had apparently messed a bunch of them up when I listed the thing for sale. I didnt want the potential buyer to see what a piece of crap it used to be :)
But the pictures above pretty much show how nasty it was and the condition it was in when I sold it. It looked nearly new, and ran the same. Looked as good or better than any 2 year old boat out there. I had probably as many hours cleaning and polishing as I did getting the mechanicals back up to snuff.
Crazy that someone can just park a boat under a tree, with cushions and all gear still in it, and forget about it. You really dont realize what things can go bad just from sitting for 6 years uncovered. A lot more than I figured.
-
welcome back!
i have some of that teleflex hose in my garage, i know its more than 50 ft in length... its yours if you want it, let me know if your interested, ill be up in N FL all this week...
-
Thanks for the offer Aswaff400!
But I plan on replacing the extruded line with the reinforced rubber stuff. My Admiral isn't getting any thinner, and is still pretty clumsy, so the plastic lines are an accident waiting to happen. I have two boys (6 and 8 ) , so there will be lots of foot traffic right there.
-
Bob,
A little tip that can save you some money. Call a local Hydraulic shop, ask if they have experience fabbing marine hydraulic steering hoses. Will save you quite a bit from buying Teleflex pre-made hoses...Electronics installation outfits as well, they fab hoses for auto pilots...
-
Thanks for the tip! I was wondering about that. I'll see what I can find. Saving a few bucks is what gives my life meaning.
-
Ran across an ad on Craigslist that was simply titled
"1999 aquasport walkaround 21 ft - $7500"
With this in the description. :queen:
"Needs carb work"
No pics. No details. No number. That was it...
I don't know who's luckier; You, for finding such a good deal. Or the seller, for finding someone to respond to his pitiful ad!
Looking forward to following along with your progress. Good luck and congrats!

An interloper! An interloper!! Run for the hills!!!
Bradley, what's up? A pleasure to have you aboard here on CAS! For those who are wondering who the hell Tipsy McStagger is, well, he is a very good friend of mine, name is Brad, and he frequents Manhattan, so those with leanings towards the city's fineries, well, he will be of great benefit! Scott, I know your 2 daughters live in NYC...
Brad own's a 24 McKeeCraft, 250 Yam HPDI, on a beautiful, black PAINTED Shoreland'r trailer. A great trailer for the freshwater membership here...
Brad, how long are you in town, and have you gotten new batts yet? Or are you back home for Turkey Day?

OH I know this Sea Rayder jet boat I bought has only 56 hours on it! It was parked under a citrus tree since 07 and then a puppy (big one) was allowed to chew it up. There was complete gear he chewed too... water skis, ski rope, anchor lines, flare kit, life vests, everything... granted something bad happened to the owner but still amazing.. only 56 hours on it?

With a handle like that, you'll fit right in! Welcome!
Bob is right, I have two daughters in the city. Next time I fly up...maybe we can check out the Big Apple via Aquasport :thumright:
(I'll bring the beer and fried chicken)

Thanks for the welcome, guys! Looking forward to following along with the project.
Bob...no, not in town and no new batteries, yet. I was in Sydney, AU when I last posted and now I'm coming to you live (and tired) from Guangzhou, China. We just got in...it's 6:30am and I'm going to grab a nap. But we're headed to a market this afternoon that's supposedly nothing but fishing gear! I'm sure it's all junk but it's worth a visit.
Scott, I split my time between NYC, FL and flying around the world...but let me know when you're in town. If I'm there, I'll take you to my favorite pub!
Sorry for the hijack! Now back to your regularly scheduled restoration :)

Unclebob,
Not sure if I should say welcome, welcome back, where ya been..... or maybe just hey, do you drink Bourbon or Scotch?
Anyhoo, not fer nuthin', but I want to tell you a little secret: I LOVE YOUR BOAT.
I mean it, you have perhaps THE sexiest Aquasport boat ever made.
There may be folks out there with better taste in boats than you - but I havn't met 'em.
Style, size, year model, hardtop - everything. Just sayin'...
-
T-Race,
Well, the feelings mutual. I looked at pictures of yours for a long time before I finally made it down to get this one.
With that said, I've been on probably every walkaround in this size class. 20'-23'. I cant think of another that has as much room or is better laid out. Little things, like the aft storage closets in the cabin, and the in-deck fishboxes, make a big difference in a boat of this size. It should fit my needs perfectly.
-
Excellent...CAPITAL !
I am very happy with this boat - it is very encouraging to hear your comments about "other" walkarounds in this size, in that I don't
have your exposure to other boats. We get lots of compliments. One local mechanic with almost 30 years experience said the 21 foot
Striper doesn't come close.
Anyhoo, we will all look forward to seeing future photos of you out enjoying your new boat !!

Been so busy I havent had a chance to do much of anything to the boat.
Yesterday I managed to fiddle with the engine for an hour or so just to see what was preventing it from firing... Pulled the airbox off, and cracked the carb float bowls to see if any fuel came out, and if it did, what the condition was. What leaked out of all carbs was pure oil..hmm.
I pulled the fuel line into VRO pump. It was pure oil. I have a half tank of fuel, so pumped it a bunch to see if it would clean up, and it did, a little. The fuel in the tank is obviously laced with oil. After emptying the flot bowls, I gave the carbs a whiff of starter fluid, and she fired. With that, I slept pretty good.
I took a break from work just now and decided to mess with it again. I hooked up my remote fuel tank, purged the oily crap from all the carbs, and turned her over. She fired right up and runs pretty good. Sweet. No LED Warning lights/alarms so I guess that''d good. She smokes like a chimney, though. I didn't let it run very long due to a storm rolling in. I had figured if the diaphram in the VRO Pump was busted (the cause of all the oil in my tank), that it would also put some into my remote tank. It didnt. Tank was clean.
I need to take a deeper look into is this weekend. In the mean time, I've got some learning to do on VRO...
-
Spent a few good hours with the boat yesterday. Scrubbed the cabin floors, walls, and storage, with comet and bleach. Cabin is now completely clean and ready.
Was going to pull and clean the carbs, but decided to try the fuel from the main tank to see if it would fire on it. I pumped some fuel from the line and it looked and smelled good, with a blue tint. It may be stabilized..I hooked the fuel line up and she started right up, with a little smoke. She sneezed and smoked for a minute or two and then cleaned right up and runs great. I let het run for an hour or so and it sounds real good, cranks with a bump of the key, and no alarms. I decided to leave the carbs alone for now, since she seems to run so smooth. I might still rebuild them just before summer, but still have several months of work to do before then anyway.
Next is steering lines, then rigging tube replacement.
-
Bob,
You know the old saying, if it ain't broke...
You'll find out about those carbs when the boat goes in the water and the motor is under load. Until then, I'd work on stuff that NEEDS working on...
Sounds like all is well in 215 Explorer land!!

Almost two weeks without an update, Bob? Very out of character for you ;)

I know, but havent had much time (or money) during the holidays to get anything done..
The holidays are over, my birthday is in 16 days, and the kids have enough toys to keep them (and probably half the neighborhood) busy for at least a month or two..
so, expect a flurry of activity soon.
I'll probably start working on the gelcoat this weekend.
-
I'll probably start working on the gelcoat this weekend.
Hey Bob,
Concerning your gelcoat, I am real curious to learn your techniques. You obviously have in goin' on when it comes to whippin' a boat into shape.
Maybe before you get going, if you would please, could you give a detailed "Action Plan" on how you are going to proceed?....
describe the problem and the steps you're going to take to fix it.
On one of your other posts you said something like "...and I didn't even have to wet sand it..." How does one know when wet sanding is needed?
I'm real interested in learning from you... I'll be pickin' up what you're layin' down
Thanks, T.

I dont have much of a detailed action plan for the gelcoat, really. As far as it needing wetsanded, we'll see. I've never had to wetsand gelcoat before to bring it back, only seen it done, so it will be a learning process for me as well. I've wetsanded paint and primers before, but never gelcoat. I've never needed to, though. In the few boats I've done, I've had good luck 3M Fiberglass Restorer Polish applied mechanically, followed up with regular old wax.
I have my polish and wax, wool/egg-crate pads for my variable, and 330 Grit wetpaper with a wetsanding block. I suppose I'll start with the polish on the worst area and see how it does. If I dont get shine within 15 minutes or so, I'll spend the same time trying a wetsand. Wetsanding is LOT of manual labor, though, so it would have to work at least TWICE as good/fast as the polish before I would consider it. I did pick up a nice little orbital hand sander a while back for my 14' Mitchell project...maybe I'll give it a chance to prove it's worth as well..
The GelCoat on this Aquasport is in worse shape than that Pro-Line was. I doubt it's ever had a polish or wax. I can see very easily where the stickers were removed..
Regardless, I'll try and document my success or failures here. Maybe I should tape off a few 2' sections and try wet sanding versus polish. Hmm.
-
Thanks, lots of good info to chew on. Can't wait to see your results. :bounce:
-
The only problem with wetsanding one little spot is if you decide to do the rest you can never get the rest of it to shine as much as that one little spot. Don't ask how I know this!
You should try polishing this! I swore to myself I would not touch it again until its ready for the road.

If you want to see the look I am going to try to get close to check out this one. It is the same model I have just one year older. Mine is a 55.

Wet sanding will shorten the buffing time for badly oxidized gel coat big time, and you'll get better results. Starting with 320 grit is WAY too aggressive unless the gel is REALLY bad and has deep scratches. I'd start with 600 or 800 grit and work your way up to 1000 or even 1200. The finer the grit you work up to the easier it will buff out to a brilliant shine.

Yep. On gel, 320 is almost like 150 on paint. Go with what wing says...
Where's Lewis? He knows his chit about sanding and finishes...

Havent had a chance to spend any time with the boat. Even though I only work 4 days a week, things just keep getting in the way. I did get a chance to get out Friday and pick up steering lines and fluid. (I hope 24' was the right length, Bob.)
Was getting myself psyched to start buffing on Saturday, when I got a call from my fishing buddy. His brother in law needed some cash for a bill so asked if he could buff my boat out. For less than $10/foot, I figured it would be worth letting him give it a shot. I told him it would take a good 10-15 hours of solid work...
The guy doesnt speak English too good, but he's a great guy, and a whizz with anything mechanical. And he works his azz off. So I took it over to him on Saturday to see what he could do.
Here's some before pictures. We'll see how it turns out. Oh yea, take it from me, DONT LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT YOUR SPARE. One thing I never do, until last Friday night. And wouldnt ya know it, had a blowout halfway into my 30 minute trip, with the kids and wife with me. Murphys Law.

He even cleaned the deck too.
I'm gonna follow it up with a bit more final protective wax, then do the steering hoses and replace the rigging tube while I'm at it. Then the boat comes off the trailer and onto blocks for bottom paint, and trailer carpet/refit. Never blocked a boat before, that should be an experience.
Final push for cash to fit the AS with electronics has begun. Filed my taxes and posted a buncha crap on Ebay.
won't be long now...

Looking good! I'm working on the same thing with my 245 now. I didn't have to wet sand the hull but I have been starting to wet sand the cap. It's amazing the results of bringing dull gel back to life.
-
The gunnels and cabin still need a bit more work because they were REALLY chalked out, but the hard part is done.
Anyone have any advice on getting the boat onto blocks for trailer work/bottom paint?
-
Can he come to Tampa, I'm ready to do mine!
-
The usual method is to lower the trailer tongue, place your blocks or stands under the transom as far out as you can, (under the chines) Raise the tongue, that should leave the back of the boat on the blocks/stands... The next tricky part is supporting the front of the boat and moving the trailer forward. Keep in mind most boats CG is toward the back third of the boat.

Back her up to a stout oak and tie off the stern eyes before pulling forward...

Yeah I left that part out. :)

Havent messed with the bottom paint yet. Decided that bottom paint isn't too important in the general scheme of things right now.
Electronics are done. Trying to work with what little cash I have while we sell our house and get ready to move..
Raymarine A57 Combo unit.
Standard Horizon GX1700 VHF with internal GPS
8' Shakespeare 5101 on Hard Top
JVC 50Wx4 head unit with Bluetooth/remote
Blaupunkt 700W Amp
Four MTX 7.7" Marine Thunder Speakers
Rod Holder Blue LED under-gunnel lights for bling
Got my EBAY cover in yesterday. 12.5oz, with zippered access and velcro antenna flaps. Fits like a glove, and is pretty frikkin nice cover for the $300 it cost me. I've spent way more for less cover than this.
I'm sure the old girl is happy to get out of the sun again.
The steering hoses are ran but not connected, as I havent replaced the old rigging tube yet. That's priority for this weekend. Then maybe ready for the water?
-
What was the Ebay seller that you bought the cover from? How do you think it will work with out riggers and such on the hard top? I've been planning on building a custom cover for my 245 but I'm stacked up at work for a while.
-

I paid $309 for mine, plus $28 shipping..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/150710178625 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/150710178625)
Pretty sure it's the same dang cover my buddy has for his Sea Hunt 232, that he paid nearly $800 for.
It has velcro flaps for antennas. You dont remove your outriggers? If you look around at his ads, you'll notice multiple price points for the same size cover, just with a different "designed to fit specific model"...
Anyhoo, it's a lot of cover for the money. I usually get 2 years out of the Generic 6oz budget covers, and usually spend $250 on those..
-
That looks like the same Ebay seller I was looking at. It looks like the one that will fit my boat runs about $349.
OH I take my riggers off but the mount has a few feet of pole on it that can't be removed. They do not extend past the hard top. I have a VHF antenna and a GPS antenna up there plus the rocket launchers. How long did it take to get it?
-
Shipping was 12 days. Slight delay due to not having mine in stock, but seller communicated quickly and efficiently. Worth it!

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on one. What the heck. At least it will give me a pattern to build one down the road out of some Sunbrella.

Can't beat the price on those covers, great find :salut:

The cover showed up Thursday! :thumright: After cleaning the heck out of the boat and decks Sunday I put the cover on. the cover looks nice but the instructions that came with it sucked. They were a black and white photo copy that looks like it was a copy of a copy. Couldn't see the photos at all. The cover fit good once we cut the webbing tie downs to size and adjusted it a bit. I spent some time sticking on the doubler fabric where the cover might get a hole rubbed thru it by the outriggers and such. Mine fits about like yours does. Just below the rub rail in around the bow and down to the lower corners of the transom. Overall a good cover for the money and quick shipping. I think I'm going make a few minor changes to it. I think I'll add on some more straps at the base of the pulpit and make a velcro opening at the front for the anchor to stick out of.

You got instructions?
Maybe ya can tell me what the little plastic hooked ratchet piece is, that looks like it could be used to tighten the cinch ropes?
I havent done anything with the doubler fabric yet. I'll stick some on next time I fit mine. Mine could stand to move back a foot or so still..
Glad you thought it was a worthy cover too. I've never felt like a got a good deal on a cover. They always seem to cost me much more than I think they're worth. But this one is obviously better made than the 6oz el-cheapo covers I've had in the past.
On a related note...on Saturday I hooked up and bled my new steering lines. Replaced the engine rigging tube, and did a few odds and ends here and there. Ran out of good weather before I could dip the boat. This weekend, hopefully.

HA HA no instructions? LOL The plastic ratchet thing is for tightening the cinch rope. The problem is you really need two of them for it to work right. What are the black webbing tabs sewn on the cover a few feet above the tie downs for?
Thats cool about the steering lines. Can't wait until you splash her.

How's the project coming along?

SLOW I tells ya. Been busy as heck lately, selling my home, finding a new one, moving in, making the new one habitable. Fixing things..
But, it does have a nice view..

And twin 8000lb Boat Lifts. :thumright: The little 14' skiff is already living happily in one. I havent even dunked the Aquasport yet. It's tucked up under the Cedar trees. Last weekend I got some new filters, hatch springs, and a few more small things for it. Funny that this thing had dual Racors. I dont see the need, and I'll probably get rid of one in the future, but too much filtration wont be bad for now.
I did drain the tank yesterday. Or, rather, I had a scrapper from craigslist come and suck 60+ gallons of orange gatorade out of the tank.
I still need to go through the carbs. Repair/replace bilge pump. And then, in the lift she goes! I bet I've put more hours on my little skiff in the last month than I have in the last 2 years combined. Nice to have the boats right in your back yard.

What a view :!: Nice :thumright:

It would look a lot better with 21' of Aquasport at the end of it.
-
That might block the view of the sunset - the decisions we have to make.
Awesome pic - thanks for sharing :thumright:

That's a good one.
Congrats on your new home, I think you'll be happy there.
Quiz: What's better than 21' of Aquasport at the end of your dock?
Answer: 42' of Aquasport ....... your 215 AND MY 215

Drained the carbs again, replaced the filters, did a few odds and ends, put some fresh fuel in the tank, and after a brief smokey struggle getting her to light off, she came back to life.
Pulled her to the ramp and lowered her into the water. Let her run for 10 minutes to see if I would get any alarms. Got none. Gave her full throttle and she damnear pushed the wifes Tahoe up the ramp. So, I unhooked her, told the wife to take the truck and trailer home, and headed for the house.
She sounds good. 46mph at 5800 rpms. 30mph at 4500rpms seems a good cruise. A hair over 30 psi water pressure at WOT. No alarms. Made it to my dock in 10 minutes or so and had to wait for the wife and kids to board. Took them for a brief ride and she started to break up a little and wasnt idling super smooth. The fuel in my filter is looking good. I think I'll try running her again to see if it will clean out. If not, the carbs are coming off for a cleaning and she'll get new plugs.
She's in the lift. :thumleft:
Now I get to practice wrenching over the water.
