Title: FL Aquasport Gathering - Spring 2011
Post by: RickK on April 10, 2011, 05:55:59 AM
Time to get this topic rolling.
May 7th is the date - gathering time is noonish <!-- s8) -->8)<!-- s8) -->
The primary gathering spot will be the small island just outside the old train tressel (sp), beside the larger island, which is secondary gathering spot in case it whips up.

There are 2 ramps on the right just after you turn onto the Boca Grande Causeway and before the toll bridge. Both are decent - if I tow down I will use Eldreds because my vehicle will be safe for the couple days I'm there.

Dave and I will be down there on the 6th and camp out on our boats - so if anyone wants to join us we'll need to exchange cell #s so we can link up because we may not camp at the island.

Be there or be square  <!-- s:!: -->:!:<!-- s:!: -->  <!-- s:!: -->:!:<!-- s:!: -->

Well I truly hate to say it   , because I was planning on this since last year, but we will have just gotten back from the week long Hawaii trip on 30 April, the we are driving to Ft. Pierce the week after the reunion (13th) and with gas @ $4 a gallon between my thirsty HD truck and the boat, this year is just going to be out of my budget.  We'll hang it on the wall for next year, or if there is a fall gathering maybe??

There will always be the one here in NC in the October time frame.  Leave the boat and fly up.  Take you on my boat

One thing you can count on here is that there will always be a gathering in May and Nov somewhere.  I missed the first Boca gathering so we'll do one more after this one and then it'll be somewhere else. Scott (CircleHooked) had a good idea - have the next location be in Okeechobee - we can pull from both sides of the state that way.  It's a purdy run up the river to Roland Martin's Marina from this side - about 52 miles from the Franklin locks.  Start saving your gas money Doc.   We have another year to figure that one out.  8)

Back to this gathering - Hooter girls are playing hard to get, they want to know what's in it for them....

That's a lot of towing.  Have to start marking your calendar early - beginning of May and beginning of Nov.  Long way to Boca from your neck of the woods.  Maybe CB can pick you up on his way down

I plan on stoppin in. Lookin forward to it.
I've been down quite a few times over the past few weeks and have seen quite a few older Aquasports in the immediate area. I camped on the island the night Central FL had all the bad weather. I could have filled my cooler with the hail that poured down on my tent.
Here it comes...

That's a good thing Scott.
Dave got his newly home-fabricated back bimini canvassed this week and he said it came out awesome.  I saw the framework and he made it out of 1 1/4" stainless - it is stout for sure.  You can hang from this thing.  Anyway, now he has a way to keep the aft dry - before there was a gap between the t-top and the back bimini.
You'll see it at the gathering.

DOC-

What time will you be departing?  Maybe we can run up there together, or rendezvous along the way.
Haven't decided where I'll put in yet, but it won't be Punta Rassa this time!  $$$. That was a 50-mile run.

So, my count so far is 6 members. What a great variety of boats we'll see!:
RickK - 230 Explorer
Circle Hooked - 225 Explorer
Glock Diver -  225 Osprey
Treefish - surprise us
Wingtime - 200 XF- still maybe or confirmed?
DOCREED - 250 CCP

Maybe we need to select that bigger #2 island, whatcha think?
VHF 68 again?

Aswaff--  with you in St. Pete, you're too damn close to bail on this one! Get on down here or catch a ride!

Rick- should we post this over in the main forum?  I'm guessing not everyone routinely looks in here... Including me for the first year!

Add Dave (CaptAqua250EXPLTD) in his 250 Explorer. We're always the first 2 there.

If you tow to Eldreds Marina right there at the bridge you can row out.

If I put in at Venice it's 30 miles to the island.

Glock Diver is maybe a little further, depending on where he launches his boat.

The plan for me is camping on the boat Fri and Sat night, you could always stay on your boat, back when i had a cc i would put a small two man tent on the front deck and sleep in that, or Rick and Dave have tons of deck space their boats for an air mattress, and i'm sure they wouldn't mind.

It just so happens that I will be coming through there on Friday late afternoon or early evening. It is a 38 Tiara, named "Necessary Evil." We will be on our way to spend the night at Cabbage Key. Then coming back north though the Gasparilla Island Bridge the next Saturday morning. I'd love to meet some of you if our schedules work out. I'm not sure what time I'll get  there (I'd like to be early, but wives, kids, guests, babysitters will certainly all conspire to make it a late trip through the bridge Friday). I've got a 1976 22-2 that I have not touched yet, but I am dying to chat about restoration options. And, I'd just like to say hello :)

So, I hope someone will be monitoring a VHF?

In any case, best to all,

Charlie,
Although I'd love to be at the gathering, business comes first. as I am swamped.  But I want to tell you, Anna Maria is my favorite place in the whole world, been around there since '66, when I was 6.

Still have an OP tee with Holmes Beach Surf Shop on the sleeve, and still love Rotten Ralph's...

The beach we were at last time was between 3-6ft depending where you were at,but with the amount of boats we should have this time we might have to go to the other beach which is a bit deeper.

Bob someone is gonna have to kidnapp you one of these days and bring you to a gathering

If I remember right you should stay in the channel until you pass the islands and then turn toward the cut between them.  I remember having 3-4 feet of water when I headed right for the big island after coming through the tressel and this stayed constant all the way to the island but I was in my 170 so I really wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to that.
We may not camp at that set of islands the first night but we'll monitor the radio-68 and 69 so you should be able to find us.
I'll be on the Shady Deal.

Scott (CircleHooked) - Dave is back on for Friday and we talked about starting the caravan down at noon.

Looks like the weather will be super.

Rick there are few good spots down there were we can get a good breez at night.

Glad Dave coming Friday, wouln't be the same without him,I plan on getting loaded up Thur evening so i should be ready to go by noon.

Dave's got a lower unit out on one engine so he'll be idling around for the most part - save him some gas. If we can get out in the pass a little the breeze should pick up.

I'll pack up mostly on Thursday night but do my shopping Friday morning - always looked at weird buying beer that early but... hey- as Doc would say- "it's 5 o'clock somewhere"

I can't wait - been putting in 13+ hr days for the last week+. My company just moved into a new bldg last Friday so the stress of packing your stuff up plus a small classroom is enough BUT I also had to take new bare training room, a bunch of boxes of new equipment, 6 bare formica 4'x8' display boards and build a world class training center out of it. On 3 of the boards it took about 13hrs for two of us to mount the equipment and wire it   There are 150+ crimp spade connectors on one board.
We finished about 99% of the boards today before I ran out of spade connectors. Will get them in tomorrow after 1.
It's only Tuesday so we're good so far- still have to finish the server racks up (3), set the room up with desks and white board (stick on) and then test everything.
I really need this weekend....

Rick i know a spot where there are 2 islands with a gap in between,if you get on the back side of the islands the wind funnels right in,as for Dave, slow and steady will still get you there, and it sounds like you need this weekend bad.

Well, looks as though any plans for camping ON Dog Island will need to be modified.  I called www.grandetours.com (http://www.grandetours.com) today (941) 697-8825, about reserving a campsite on the island, and was informed that the state has closed the island to campers, until the end of May!  And apparently it's posted on signs, too.  Reason: nesting Great Blue Herons.

But the smaller island is still fair game, and is first come, first served.  I'm going to try to leave mid-Friday afternoon, and get up there about 6pm, with the intent to camp on that small island.

Weather forecast looks great, marine forecast looks great!  :thumright:  See you guys in Boca Grande!

Yep, and plan B will be to simply sleep on the deck of my boat.  (I rigged up an extension to my casting platform.)  No rain is expected, I have tarp to keep the dew off me, and some netting in case the mosquitoes are out.

Here's a pic of the two diehards, RickK and Circle Hooked. The first 2 boats there, and probably the last 2 to leave!

After a dicey Friday afternoon with some rain, we had a beautiful weekend for the Aquasport Gathering.  I'm sure more pics will follow.  All told, I believe we had 7 boats, unless someone else showed up after I left on Saturday. In addition to the 2 pictured, we had Woody, Treefish, sc170, DOCREED, and yours truly.  Great meeting all of you guys!!

Here's one more.  For those fortunate enough to stay Friday night, here's the sunset we saw.  The smaller island is in the background.

I left my dock at 0705 and was on a plane by 0725.  Except for few  unforecast rain cells i saw, it was a nice ride.

I would have been on time but for an emergency hat overboard exersize. (Which was successful)
When I did arrive at about 0910, I was greeted by a host of familiar and smiling faces and a hot breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs, home fries and biscuits. I was out of coffee by then, so a cold chocolate milk seemed like the appropiate choice to accompany breakfast.

The raft-up broke up about 0930 and we moved in behind the sandspit.  The adult beverages were broken out and swimming and fishing were squeezed in between cold beers.   As experienced yachtsmen, we knew the dangers of dehydration under the Florida sun, and brought plenty of cold beverages.  Not a soul became dehydrated.

Even out guests of honor enjoyed a swim in 84 degree water.

RickK's swim ladder was a focal point of activity.

...and a good time was had by all

Good Time....Good People.... Good boats

The ride back home was easier then the ride up.  The 10-15 out of the west that were forecast for the afternoon were more like 5mph.  Smooth ride and i had my last ice cold beer while i was entering my canal.

I arrived home about 7PM (without incident)

:a0006:The gathering on Friday started out nice with Dave and I, CircleHooked (Scott) and son (Josh) and Treefish (Jim), whom was camping on the island. Jim gave Josh a bunch of whitebait and he immediately put them to use.
There was a storm to the north of us and we thought it might break up before it got to us.

Right after the storm ended we all took off to cruise or fish or both.  I heard an unfamiliar voice talking to Circlehooked and found that Mike (GlockDiver) was in the neighborhood and after an hour or so we all met back up and barged together for the night. So it ended up with Scott's, Mike's and my boat together for the night shinanigans.  Good times, good refreshments, good food, good friends and did I mention good refreshments
Next morning we got up, cooked a bunch of food and then Doc arrived just in time to clean up the leftovers. Jim (Treefish) came back by with a motor problem and had to go home so it was a short gathering for him. Nice to meet you Jim. Shortly after that we all split up again to go fish and stuff. Doc had drawn the short straw - the job of finding and claiming enough room for us to chill later.
We were back at the dock and met Woody who was just heading out to meet us.  He followed us out and the gathering began.
Doc was waiting (don't look at that teak - it's on his short list)

Way in the back, John (sc170n) and Son-in-law(Duane?) had found us in his 22-2 Osprey (John we're going to implement a limit on the number of boats a member can have in their signature    )

About 2ish Woody wanted to go fishing and so did I so we pushed off in his boat and cruised about 200 feet from the gathering and shot the breeze about woodworking (he's a master I hear from others), life in general and caught a mess of short trout with one being a possible keeper, which I didn't.  Woody stayed barged up with us that night (Woody's, Scott's and my boat again) - weather was just perfect for camping.
Here are some of Woody's pics - he can narrate if need be:

Thanks Rick for posting those pix for me . Rick , being the gentleman he is , didn't mention that he out fished me  6 to 3 on the trout and also had the biggest . Circlhook came back in with the keeper trout and had those for his and son Josh's supper that night . Josh is a fine young man , (16 I think ?) and fished hard long after dark .  It was truly a great time with perfect weather ( at least after I arrived on Sat .am ) It was great to put faces on the names Ive seen on here for so long . A good bunch of fellows . Don't miss another roundup , I won't !

I couldn't make that one (Nov '10) remember?
I have a teaching contract with a company in Huntsville that seems to neglect what I put in the contract about giving me a 3 month notice on any classes, and they drop a class on me with 30 or less days notice.  30 days would seem sufficient if I didn't already have a schedule published for training my dealers for the qtr - so anyway, I lately have had to scramble to support both them and a dealer class at the same time - that's what happened last Nov.  Hope it doesn't happen again this year. I'll put the date survey up soon.
