it's been a while since i've had a boat, so it might be normal, but the trim seems to have trouble trimming down. when the motor is trimmed up all the way, it won't trim down without help. i push button a few times in short bursts, hold it, and everything in between, but only way to get it down is to use motor trim button while pushing down on bottom end of motor. then it'll start going and go all the way down. the other thing it does is as it's going down, i can actually hold the motor up and keep it from trimming down. if i let go it'll continue going down, but i wouldn't expect to be able to simply hold it up against the trim motor.
any ideas?

Fluid level in the trim pump reservoir?

hate to sound like a total dufus, but how do i chekc that? is that right on the cylinder itself? could it be that if the trim up works fine?

If the tilt tube is corroded enough it will keep the motor from going down. I had to help a friend fix that issue on twin Yamahas last year. When is the last time it was greased?

What's the year and make of the outboard? Reason I ask is my motor does that every now and then. It's a common issue on newer Suzuki's

i'm not sure when it was last greased. where would i find the fitting?
it's a 2000 evinrude
i looked all over the trim motor and cylinder and couldn't find what would look like a fill port. everything looked to be self contained. i'm gonna look to see if i can find a manual for the motor.
i bought the boat used a few weeks ago. the guy seemed to take care of everyhting, but not sure what he ever did for maintenance on the trim system.

My 1998 200hp Johnson does this too, but only if I trim it ALL THE WAY up as far as it'll go. Was told by a marine mechanic that it could be fixed, but it's a nasty 2 hour job of busted knuckles. So, I let it be... I just don't trim it up further than about 45 degrees.

that's the only time it does it, when it trims up all the way. have you tried holding up against it trimming down? i figured maybe trimming down isn't really forcing it down but just releiving pressure, but when it hits those hydraulic resistor things it definitely pushes against those.

See the attached photo for the location of the fill cap. Fill the reservoir up to the bottom of the fill cap with the engine tilted all the way up. It's a self bleeding system, so just cycle the tilt up in down a few times after you have it filled.

sweet. i think i've seen that thing. need to find port though. after using the trim more it seems to have gotten better a little, maybe it needed to be used some to self bleed itself. i'll still top it off though. thanks.
