Title: Johnson 70 on 170?
Post by: Mr. Osprey on November 20, 2005, 10:17:22 PM
There are a couple of 70hp Johnson motors that I'm looking at from a local dealer. They want $3500 for a 1998 and $4000 for a 2000. Any thoughts on the motors? Will it be enough to ski, tube, and wakeboard? Is the price to steep for that engine? Any performance data reguading this engine and a 84' 170 Osprey? Any input is appreciated.

When I bought my boat it had a Johnson 65 on it. I liked the engine, it had plenty of power for fishing. Those newer Johnsons are both carburated? Don't sound bad to me.

Are these totally rebuilt motors?  If not, the price is too high.  I'd look for someone that rebuilds. I just bought a totally rebuilt (head sent to machine shop) '98 Johnson 115 for $3895 and it had a 1 year mechanical AND electrical warranty.  Looking at my motor, outside and under the cowl, you'd swear it was new. As far as HP, IMO go for a bigger motor, I think you'd like a little more HP than a 70.  8)

My humble opinion is that a 70 is a little light duty for what you want to do.  You're better off with a 90 Yamaha, I think.  You could get a nice used one for about what they're asking for those OMC's.  It's better to have it and not use than to need it and not have it.

hi osprey, sounds high for the year...there is a place in waterford ct that does total rebuild  late model ob' s, with a warranty, i was quoted 4600.00 for a late model 150 hp johnson which i thought was pretty good.. the web page www.outboardexchange.com (http://www.outboardexchange.com) ...jim  good luck :D

I also think that's the way to go and I guess it's a little closer than the guy I bought from.
