Title: Aquasport Surmerged
Post by: aquasport1 on September 18, 2010, 11:26:39 PM
I have a 1989 17ft Osprey.  I was unaware when I purchased the boat that it had been submerged in water.  Will the foam in this 1989 model absorb water or is it close cell foam?  If I wanted to cut some inspection holes in the deck can someone give me measurements as where the foam in located.

Welcome aboard aquasport1  :!:  :!:
So how did you find out that it had been submerged?

The man I bought it from had not changed the title in his name so when I sent the paperwork off to have it transferred to me Motorboat registration informed me that it was still in a previous owners name.  I called him and he told me that the Coast Guard called him to inform him of the sinking because it was still in his name.  The man a tied it to a yacht and the yacht sunk and pulled it down with it.

That's too bad.
As for the foam, you can bet it was and still is waterlogged.
I can only tell you where the foam was in my 170 , which is 18 years older than yours, so not going to be totally accurate.  It was everywhere except the very aft in front of the engine. You can browse through through some of the rebuilds on the newer hulls and you'll see that the stringers are usually foamed inside, the areas outboard of the main stringers are foamed - just about everywhere including some in the fuel tank area.

I think the big question is how long was it submerged?  Was it just for a few hours?  or Days?  I wonder if you can find any records the Coast Guard may have on it.

I think it will depend on the foam. I have a 98' sundance that is foam filled. It was submerged. The bottom of the hull was delimainting, with several holes through to the foam. There was no water in the foam. If it was mine, I would find someway to access the foam and cut out a small section, fairly deep into the foam, to see if it is holding water. I would guess if there is water in one spot, all the foam is probably wet.
If the hull is in fairly good shape, the floor is not soft or rotted, I would look into trying to dry out the foam. I HAVE NEVER TRIED THIS. Others may say this cannot be done, and they may be right, but I would at least look into it before I ripped up the floor. If the foam is porous enough to absorb water, I would think that you could evaporate the water out of it.
If you could get air to flow under the deck, push air in with a heater, like a kerosene blow heater, and have a an outlet, where the moist warm air could escape, you might can dry it out. I have seen this done in flooded houses. It might work. I try crazy things sometimes, and sometimes they work.

AS1,
You may want to query the guys over on continuouswave, Whaler owner's site.  Although they may be un-sinkable, Whaler's are notorious for absorbing water in the foam...

Hello sir.  My name is John Dupree and I think that is my old boat you are talking about.  Are you in the Morehead area?

No I don't have time to repair it.  Know anyone who may want to purchase it.  It is a good looking boat, stern has been replaced and the boat looks real good.  That is why I purchased it.  I just purchased it from a crook in Durham Nothh Carolina that builds fiberglass boats.

It may be OK, as it was just a buoy for the sunk sailboat it was tied to, but that's another story...

How about some pics?  What do you want for her?  You could list her for sale in the Classifieds forum - the 170 models are pretty popular!

That is why I wanted to find out where the foam was just to cut an inspection hole.  I have already installed a motor but havn't put the boat in the water because I wanted to find out if it was waterlogged.

I would start by putting the boat in the water and see how she sits by herself.  I think this would tell you a great deal.  It appears the boat was submerged a year or two ago.  If the foam is water logged, I would assume that the decks would be flexing badly by now and soft spots would be developing.

There is no soft spots.  When you notified me that it had been submerged I pulled the gas tank out and there was no sign of water in the tank.  It was dry and no water beads.

The guy's name that bought it from me was Bill Harding.  He is the one that never took it out of my name and I was called by the Coast Guard and local police near Wilmington, NC.  They informed me that the boat was submerged.  How much I don't know.

I think Bill Harding has a boat place somewhere in Goldsboro.  If you plan to keep the boat I will try and get a hold of him for you.  If you are selling it, I will just leave it alone.

I would like to keep it if it doesn't require a lot of repair.  If it requires me to cut the floor out I just don'y have the time.  I am rebuilding my house which was flooded in a hurricane and tending to both parents which are almost bed ridden.  I would love to have the time to repair it.  I have cut the floor out of several and repaired them.  It is not hard just time consumeing.

Hi John,

You are familiar with this website.  How and where would a post a request for pictures of a 170 with the floor out that would show me where the foam is located.  I remenber seeing one the first time I visited this site.

Thanks,

Check this rebuild out.  Older 17 footer but same hull.  Check out the very first picture on the top left of the below link.  This will show you where your stringers and your foam are at.

You can count on the foam being damp, maybe not waterlogged, but it probably will not be dry.  That's just a fact of life for older boats.  How wet is the question - if she floats on her lines, she probably weighs about the same as when new, so no big deal.  If she sits low in the water, then you probably have more water in the foam.  You could also weigh the boat and determine how much water ballast she is holding, but reliable weight numbers for Aquasport boats are not easy to find.

Good luck!
