Hello everyone,
I just picked up my 1978 200CCP with a Johnson 185HP last weekend, named her Sick Day. I am very excited about this boat and am looking forward to starting my work on her. She is in pretty good shape and will be starting my rebuild soon. Looks like we are going to have some great weather this weekend so I can’t wait to get started....
I have so many questions for all you Aquasport pros on here, looking forward to learning a ton about what I think is an excellent boat!!
So far I have been out a couple times with her and she runs pretty strong. I have changed plugs, cleaned carbs, lower unit oil looked real good and the impeller looked to have been changed very recently. I am getting 110 PSI on 5 cylinders and 101 on one. Pretty good compression I think. I am concerned about the hole shot or lack there of. I am a little disappointed as it seemed my 115 merc inline 6 on a 21 ft manatee blows it away out of the hole. I have a couple things still to look at prop being my first suspicion. I will post some numbers on RPM @WOT after I get out on her again ( I was too excited and cold this past weekend to take numbers down). I think IM propped too big but will also jot down prop numbers soon.
I am going to start this weekend by inspecting all of my wiring, having some electrical issues with the bilge pumps and basically all of the switches on the boat. Any suggestions on buying marine wire and cable online would be appreciated!!
I have sold the Todd Seats and picked up a really cool leaning post which I plan on installing this weekend. I have attached a photo any suggestions on manufacturer would be appreciated. (sorry for the bad picture I will take some more tomorrow) It has 2 cutouts for seat cushions. I like this option and for 20 bucks couldn’t resist. I will need to either find cushions online or I think I can probably make my own. Any way I look forward to meeting some fellow Aquasport owners on here and sharing my project with you guys and gals.....

Here is a picture(sorry its in the back of my van) of the leaning post. Any idea on name brand anything? I can’t find anything on line to match it up to.

Thanks all!

Welcome aboard NTF :salut:
You need to to talk to Capt. John. aka GoneFission.
He's a few electrons short in the outer shell  but boy he knows the 200CCP. :thumright:
Be sure to inquire about the infamous steering wheel fillet/blender board.
Good luck.

Nice boat man :thumleft: Looking forward to pictures and numbers :)

Welcome aboard nightimefishn :!: :!:
Nice looking rig :thumright:

Thanks everyone. Yeah I am pretty excited about this new boat. I'm very much looking forward to working on her.
And thanks to Capt Bob I am loving the NTF acronym. On a side note I am an avid fisherman who loves the nightime fishing. I prefer striped bass fishing and before I owned a boat would go out on party boats. A buddy and I would always look at each other and say nightimefishing as soon as it got dark. Just love it. SO NTF is perfect thanks capt bob. I will look up Gone fission and get some of his feedback.
I will post some better pictures and numbers this weekend. I plan on going out and slaying some blackfish for a few days before they are gone in the Long Island Sound.....
Talk to you guys soon.

I love night fishing , actually my fave, spooky too

Welcome aboard :!: I have owned my 1981 200 CCP for 3 years and it is a very solid boat. I have had it 25 miles out and handles the water great.
As far as your hole shot is concerned, you have to keep in mind that the CCP is a very heavy boat and has a deep V hull. Don't know much about a Manatee but I don't think that it is near the weight that a CCP is. I have a 200 Mercury on mine and run a 17 pitch prop. She gets out of the water fine. Finding the right prop is trial & error.
I have learned a great deal about the 200 CCP since I have had her. Will be glad to answer any questions that you might have. Welcome again :!:
-
Thanks John, I am actually taking a look at your earlier threads from when you first got your boat. I love the colors of your deck and the hull itself. Very nice. I may have to look in to that. So I see you ripped out your gas tank. I am going to tackle this possibly this weekend. THe guy I bought it from said the original owner abandoned it I dont know why but will want to inspect and take a looksy. Currently I have a 12 gallon portable which will no way be enough for me. I will burn that getting out of the harbor I think. So I guess i am just looking for some pointers. I will post some pictures soon on my boat.
-
Thanks for the compliment on the color. That is original from Aquasport and it was called Tahitian Tan. I have never been much of a fan for it, but do like the original deck color.
I replaced my original 73 gal tank with a 55 gal tank. I wish that I had stuck with a 73 considering I like to go offshore and my gas mileage is horrible.
Would love to see some additional pictures of yours. She looks to be in good shape. Noticed that you said that you were starting a re-build? What all are you going to do to her?
-
Well rebuild may not have been the proper term. I plan on removing the pedestals, I picked up a leaning post for dirt cheap just need to get some cushions for it. Definitely need to do something with the fuel tank situation. I am looking to add a T Top and some type of enclosure at some point. I like to fish at night for Striped bass in the fall so it will be cold as hell without something...I looked at another guys rebuild and I love all the storage he had added. I plan on doing some of the same work, adding some wash downs probably some seats in the back. I love the under gunnel blue led lights, need to add a search spot light, and would like to light the console a bit.
I have a buddy who welds so we are taking some measurements this weekend for the Top frame. Should come out pretty nice. I really like the idea of a hard top but too pricey. I saw a guy on ebay recently selling a blemished top but now cant find him. Of course trying to do all this on a budget (wife cant stand when fishing and boating season start).... BOAT = BREAK OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND!
I have to go through all of the wiring and straighten that mess out, bilge pumps.... etc. I would like to re finish the deck as the deck is pretty beat up. Only one little soft spot.
I know I wont get to all of this too soon, because this weekend weather is calling for 75 - 80 degrees in NY and Stripers have begun to move in. SO WHO KNOWS NOW>>>>
I am having some issues with my hole shot, I will be rebuilding the fuel pump this weekend also. I have a feeling it could be the cause. It is like the boat is trying to catch up. I know its a heavy boat but I think I should be getting more out of the hole. Will post some numbers when I get out this weekend.

So I have a 14 1/2 X 19 prop on my 185 Johnson. Everything I am looking at says pitch should be 15 for water sports and 17 for speed. So I am going to try and find an inexpensive prop to test. Anyone have any of these sizes around for sale?
Should I be looking at 4 blade or 3 blade? What are the differences?
Thanks
-
Welcome to the site - it's good to have another CCP owner! Try a 17 pitch stainless prop, and look for a 4 blade for a CCP. I'm running a 19 pitch HighFive on my 22-2CCP with a 200 Merc and it's just about right. However, the 185 on your boat would probably do better with a 17, and the 4 blade gives a better hole shot than a 3 blade. You may be able to find a nice one locally, or keep an eye on eBay and you might find a deal:
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid ... Categories (http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=johnson+17+prop&_sacat=See-All-Categories)
You may find the tank cover panel is soft when you remove the pedastals. Recoring the tank cover is pretty easy, and you have to take it off to get to the tank anyway. The tank cover is cored with plywood, and the deck plate hole usually was not sealed when they cut the hole, so rot and delamination starts there. You need to lift the console up to get the cover off and get access to the tank, but you don't have to disconnect anything - just lift it up and put some 2x4s under it to hold it up. It will look like this with the cover off:

Hope this helps - good luck and see ya on the water!

Well NTF,
You're in with a couple of scoundrels now dude. :pirat:
Hell, I forgot about JD and the nice thing is, he has all of his valence electrons in their designed shell. :shaking2:
Looks like you bit the bear today.
Good luck with your boat and post pics when you can.

It's good to hear I've moved up to the level of scoundrel.
As Luther said in Mission Impossible, "I'm going to miss being disreputable."
See ya on the water!

And well deserved I might add :thumright:

Hey Nightimefishn,
I suspect stuck rings from carbon on your 185. Get some Valvetech or equivelant and decoke the engine per the intructions and see if the compression raises. That engine should have plenty of punch for that boat without going down to 15" of pitch.
-
Excellent, you guys are the best. As I said I am really excited about this boat. I absolutely love the hull, it is my first center console and dont think I will ever go back to cuddy again....
Anyway on to some of my questions.
Re core what exactly does that mean? I am not the best when it comes to fiberglassing ( I tried on my last boat and it was a disaster), so please bear with me. Throw any type of electronics or computer issues at me and I can take care of my own. But to be honest the idea of ripping up the plywood and messing with that scares me to death!
The previous owner told me the original owner abandoned the gas tank, he has a 12 gallon portable which I am going to have to deal with until I figure out what I am going to do long term. So I will keep a couple 12 gallon tanks on board for the meantime.
But I am planning on working on her all day on Sunday, going to re wire and mount the batteries and re run all the wiring and cables really neaten up under the console. The back starboard side hatch area needs attention BIG time. I looked in there and it is total spaghettio!!I picked up the bilge pump and it started to run, so I need to take a look at wiring and the rest of that mess. The previous owner also installed a water cock valve in that area, said it was leaking originally and he fixed it. From the looks of "his handy work" I need to keep an eye on that also.
Sorry kind of rambling here.
A couple questions:
1.The drain holes in the rear of the boat. Should I be getting water in there on the deck when I am at sea anchored up? I noticed it was kind of pooling in that area when I was out last weekend? Now the bilges werent working at that time but I thought they were just to remove the water form the bilge? Again I apologize my terminology may not be correct so please correct me when I am wrong.
2. Anyone have an idea where I may find cushions for this leaning post (or even who made this thing maybe it is custom but I cannot find it anywhere on the net) . I really like it and like the design. I plan on adding my stainless rod holders also.

Thanks Fitz I will give that a try.
This forum is great looking forward to speakign with all you guys during my "upgrade"....

Here's how they work.
viewtopic.php?p=27098#p27098 (http://www.classicaquasport.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?p=27098#p27098)
The rubber expandable plugs like these work well.
http://www.bellrpg.net/bottomsup/MA/gro ... 1&GRP=2170 (http://www.bellrpg.net/bottomsup/MA/grouppart.asp?MAJ=020&PRI=086&SEC=191&GRP=2170)
NTF,
The reference to "ping pong ball" scuppers does not pertain to the CCP models and would not work.
I've used the plugs since I've owned mine and they work very well.
-
Excellent thank Capt Bob. That is very usefull information! Much appreciated.
-
The outlets should be above the waterline, but may let some water in if someone stands in the aft corner of the boat. You may have a problem if water comes in with the boat at rest and you are standing in the middle of the boat. Check out the following:
Is the livewell by the transom full of water? That's about 100 lbs in exactly the wrong place and will also cause problems planing the boat. I really don't know any CCP owners who actually use that rear livewell regularly. Drain it, close the valve, and you will probably be better off.
Check the bilge and make sure water is not accumulating there and the bilge pump float switch is working. Be sure to caulk the seams in the livewell. It's amazing how much water can get inside the bilge from those seams if they are not caulked. Try the 4200UV caulk, as it does not yellow like 5200 when exposed to sunlight.
If you've done all the above and the scuppers are still under water, you may have wet foam in the stringers or hull. That ain't fun. The sides of the hull (between the liner and the hull) are foamed, and the area under the deck on the outsides of the stringers is foamed. The center under-deck area is open, with an under-deck box molded into the bow section. You can fix wet foam under the deck by digging it out or making a water path aft for drainage. Wet stringers are another issue, and require a serious rebuild.
If you are doing some wiring and upgrades, consider moving the batteries from the spashwell up under the console. That takes another 100+ lbs off the stern of the boat and moves it forward.
Hope this helps - now let's go fishin!

Somewhere I did a post on recoring the tank cover, but can't find it. Here's tank replacement - step by step:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2597 (http://www.classicaquasport.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2597)
Good luck!

Good points made, especially concerning weight in the stern. Best to get the excess weight (batts., etc.) forward. Trend has been to position the weight forward, including fuel cells.
Our hulls have always planed quickly. Tab her down, and take advantage of a hull in the water.
-
Thanks guys. Batteries were already removed from the rear and put in the center console. I just need to clean up the mess and mount the batteries. I saw a rebuild Capt Koz did on his 200CCP, I love how he installed lights under the center console I plan on doing that also. Tomorrow morning out for some fishing and water trials with me mechanic. Going to look at this hole shot issue. Going to try a different prop. He thinks he has a 17 Pitch somewhere.
Then Sunday will be starting the real work. I will have plenty of pictures this weekend.
Thanks everyone for all of your help and advice. I am sure there will plenty of more questions that come up.
Weekend is FINALLY here, calling for beautiful weather all weekend for a change. Its been real snotty here in NY the past few days. Looking forward to it breaking.

AND I just realized something looking at the registration my boat is actually a 1979!!!
Man, now I need to change all my signatures and such......
Anything change from 78 to 1979?
-
CCPs from 1978 to 1980 were basically all the same. The first big change year was 1981, when the console and spashwell were redesigned.
-
Looks like you found a good one, NTF. Welcome!
You've already got good info from some of 800 lb. gorillas here (meant in the best possible way, guys  ) - a great site, period.
When you have a chance post it here....

Have you located the HIN "stamp" in the hull on the outside transom Starboard side, below the rubrail? Check that and see if it shows the year.

welcome, great to see another ccp on here. It's a great boat you will love it. Check out www.greatlakesskipper.com (http://www.greatlakesskipper.com) for a t top. I bought a damaged one from a salvaged mako for $300 from them and with a few days work welding I have a very nice t top. shipping was the killer at about $250.00. Beleive it or not the t top got more damaged in shipping and they ended up refunding all my money and I just paid the shipping! Goodluck

OK I finally got out yesterday. Saturday was a wash for me, worked really night and was exahusted on Saturday. Anyway I was able to take a few more pictures of my boat.

Now on to some of the details of my testing.
I am at 4500 RPM WOT at about 29KTS according to GPS.
I was very impressed with how this boat handled yesterday. I am very much looking forward to this boat. Plenty of room. I wasnt able to get a prop this past weekend but I think this engione runs real real strong.
So for now thats about all I got. I will be scouring the internet looking for a 14 1/4 17 prop. If anyone comes across a steal please keep me in mind.
I also think I may have found a t top frame for next to nothing and have located a hard top. I should be in pretty good shape for this season.
Thanks all talk to you soon.

Got some linesides! Nothing better than seeing the kid reeling in a fish. :salut:
Hit the vinyl trim on the forward side bins with some Tilex and they will turn back white.
See ya on the water
