Title: Genmar Bust-Up
Post by: ccckirch on January 17, 2010, 05:55:47 PM
Has anyone heard what will become of Aquasport with the carve-up of Genmar that is going on?

Well, let's look back to well before the current shennanigans at Genmar...

In '05, Genmar decided to stop producing Aquasports due to...well, that's anybodies guess, and forget what Genmar gave as the reason.  Then Wellcraft and Hydra-Sports are moved to Tennessee (smaller boats) and Michigan (bigger boats), shutting down the Sarasota plant.  Whether they shipped the AS molds up to Murfeesboro/Cadillac is, once again, anybodies guess.  Warranty issues started to pop up with the HS 33 Vector, which I'm sure focused their attention even further away from AS.  Then comes the current BS.  Now we know Mastercraft has picked up HS, I don't know the fate of Wellcraft, not to mention Ranger.

So where does this leave the future of AS?  I wouldn't hold my breath on anything.  Anytime Irwin Jacobs is involved in a business dealing, you better believe he is in it only for himself.  Therefore, I would venture to say that the AS molds will rot in a boneyard until someone with enough money, and enough passion, for AS will take them off his hands and revive the brand.

Unfortunately, with the state of the boat building business right now being FAR less than ideal, I would say it's going to be awhile...

Just my take on things... :?
