Title: sticking gas gauge
Post by: fpj70147 on January 09, 2010, 05:20:00 PM
I have a problem with the gas gauge on my 86 Osprey. The gauge sticks at about half full, doesn't move until the tank is almost empty, and then drops to show empty.
Any recommendations for a fix? Thanks

I'd bet that the sending unit is on its last legs.

They suffer from fuel fumes, and excessive moisture and tend to corrode from same.
Unless the gauge looks damaged on the face, you could just replace the sender but if it's a circa 1986 device, I'd just replace the entire unit.
Most places sell the gauge with sender, though you can buy each separately.

Good luck.

Remove the access pie over the aft end of your fuel tank.  Remove the sender.  Operate the float while observing the fuel gauge.  It should register full with the float at it's upper range of travel, empty when at the lower range. A fuel sender works, or sends a signal to the gauge, on resistance, not voltage.  If the upper end of it's travel is not giving the proper resistance, then. as Bob said, it's shot.

By removing it, you also find out what kind of sender you have.  The type with a lever arm, or the type with a float that slides up and down a shaft.
