Title: Question for Seabob4
Post by: reeldrag on January 09, 2010, 08:59:48 AM
Hello All,
I just joined the site, should be a great resource and look forward to future chats. I have a question for Bob. I Bought a 250 XF (1984) last summer, love the boat, looking forward to this upcoming season (fish off New Jersey). There is no storage or even access under the V bunks in the cabin. Is there any usable space below the bunks? I expect there is foam below, could I install after market access hatches, chip away the foam (if there is any) to create more storage space, or will stringers, hull or structural be an issue, or just not worth it for any potential available space?

I appriciate your thoughts.
Thanks,
Curt

Hello???

Reeldrag,
Welcome aboard :salut:

The older XFs didn't seem to have the access panels on the bunks that later models would get.

I have a 210WAC that does and I believe RickK has them also in his 230.
There's not a tremendous amount of space there due to the taper of the hull and not sure if the older models had foam in that area. Mine does not.

You could cut a small access plate (say 6") on one bunk, centered on where you would place a larger hatch, IF... you liked what you found.
That would allow you to see just what room was available and if it was worth the effort. The inspection hatch would then be covered by the cushions or removed altogether when a larger hatch was cut in.

I think you will find a rather deep but tapered area under the bunk that you can utilize.

Good luck and post some pics of the 250.

Bob,
Thanks for the info. Having an enclosure installed as we speak, will let you know the outcome.

Welcome aboard reeldrag  :!:  :!:

As Bob said, the depth of the storage is not much on the sides under the berths but you can pack quite a lot in them - the one up front has quite a bit of room being it is the V of the hull.
Show us some pics of the before and after of the enclosure  :bounce:

Looks great!  How's the enclosure going?

They have not started yet, I drive by the boat every third day (work). No rush, todays high barely hit 30. Going with Isingglass (sp) It was a cold fall/winter striper season without it, spring run should be comfortable.

Looks like you have the hang of it now  :thumleft:
You can post many pics in the same thread/topic - just press enter twice before posting the 2nd and subsequent pics to put in a blank row between them.

Looks like a nice boat  :thumleft:   The glass guy won't try to install it until it warms up - shrinks when cold.

I have a soft top on my Explorer. I wonder what's involved in replacing it with a hard top. Shouldn't be too hard would it? After all, the supports are already in place.

Hi

Welcome

It's a pleasure to see another 250 XF, I think there aren't too many of them out there.
Please post some more photos.

I think that the part you want to open is filled with foam.

Regards

I saw your boat and laughed, damn near identicle. Bought it last june, had some good trips, believe it or not that boat was 70 miles off shore serching for tuna three times (east coast, New Jersey). Now, I must say we do not go alone, my buddy has a 23' wellcraft and we run together. So combined we have 48' of boat (this is what I tell my wife) hell, when you pass ten miles and sink your not making it back anyway. Boat is currently getting an enclosure, then we will do the "to do list" and be in the water at the latest April 1.
Stay in touch,
Curt (reeldrag)

Will do. Love the boat, been 70 miles off shore. Ran like a top (good sea conditions). Tell me about yours.

Hi

I bought my 250 XF 7 years ago.
With the boat I never had any greater problem, but with the old Evinrude 150.
Until now I never went off the coast more than 10 miles. When I bought it I brought it home by sea ( aprox 100 miles ) along the coast, it was a nice trip. ( Barcelone to Tortosa ( L'Ampolla) )
Too I went up the Ebro River to Tortosa from the sea, it was a good " cruise ".
As I changed the motor a month ago, this summer I'll be able to make some adventures.
With the new motor ( Suzuki DF 225 ) the boat run awfully well, before the cruising speed was 17 mph, now its 26 with much less fuel consumption.
I like the walkaround hull, it perfect for family trips with children.

If you want to know more details about the boat perhaps I can help you

Regards

17, that is terrible. You must have had some dead cylinders. I top out at 33 MPH WOT, we cruise 23/25 @ 3,800/4,000 RPM with a 1994 Evinrude ocean pro 225 and get almost 2.25 miles to the gallon. I will run out of daylight before I run out of gas. What is your prop pitch and WOT RPM's?
Curt

Hi

The data are cruising speed, with the old rude I got 30 mph ( 26 knots ) top speed ( it was a 150 HP ), with the zuke I get 42 mph ( 37 knots )  top speed.
At cruising I achieve 3,8 mpg on top speed I get 3 mpg.

In order to see if You have foam beneath the bunks, take out the fridge, it's fixed with only 4 screws.

Stephen,
I like your top end speed and your MPG. These new motors are really something on their performance. When I re power I am thinking of 300 HP. The boat should fly. Thanks for the frige idea, I will give it a try.
