a buddy of mine wants me to do basic service on Friday to his Suzuki outboard... I've done i/o's and 2-stroke o/b's a dozen times but have never touched a 4-stroke o/b. as far as i know i need to change: oil, oil filter, gear oil, and water pump. what type of motor oil do y'all recommend? same with gear oil... im assuming it has between 200 and 300 hours, should i go ahead and change the plugs?

An oil thread?
Boy on the motorcycle forums, oil and tire threads cause a lot of controversy and hurt feelings. but...
They always filter back to the Manufacturer's recomendations. There just isn't any way to argue around that.
They all want you to use their branded oil for sure but as long as the specs are the same hey, choose the one on sale.
Here's a start. http://www.suzukimarine.com/faqs/maintenance/3/
Gear oil is the same, though I always use the Manufacturer's product in both my boat and bike.
Change the plugs? Why not? A 60 doesn't have that many and if the old ones look good, brush them off and use them for a spare should the strange situation arise that one fouls.
Good Luck.
