Picked up a 72 FB last week. Got the floor and liner out (not in these pics obviously), going to redo stringer system completely, originals were patched up by a bunch of monkies or something and are just completely shot, something like lilrichard's more than likely, but putting a new transom in first. Planning on Nidacore deck with forward fishbox/platform, bilge hatch, and false wall with closed transom, simple bare bones... suggestions welcome, heres some pics...

tried to get a good pic of the transom, this thing is a giant lumpy wave, piss poor craftsmanship, and the wood core isnt even sealed off to the bottom of the hull on the inside, thats my first order of bid'ness
-
Welcome aboard dirtwheelsfl :!: :!:
The stringer system looks to be in great shape and you might think about salvaging it - hard to beat those trapazoid types. I would cut the top centers out of the stringers in a few places and dig the foam out and then make sure the bottom of the stringers are attached to the hull well. Another thing you might consider is measure for an under floor fuel tank and then carefully cut the center stringer out enough to fit it in plus put a bulkhead across the aft to contain it.
-
Be careful if you remove the stringers, the hull will have a tendancy to flex once they are removed. Building a cradle will keep it from doing this since the cap is already off. Plus if you put it on a cradle you can drop it closer to the ground and make it easier to climb in and out of. Looks good so far! Are the stringers delaminated from the hull because they look pretty good in your pics. I agree with rickk that its hard to beat the strength of the original design. Can you show a closeup of the monkey part?
-
ya its hard to see in the pics but every stringer is cracked and delaminated in multiple places. the port stringer had its foam replaced and was glassed over at one point, but i can pull the glass off with my hand if i wanted too. im in the process of building a cradle to go over the gunnels and already have the bottom along the chines braced up. the whole inside of the hull is getting a layer of biax to keep her stiff with no inner liner, plus some extra along the chines and keel. yes rick definitely doing an under floor tank, only way to go...
-
just picked up an '06 dual axle continental aluminum trailer for her, for $1000,
it also came with a '72 seacraft , brand new ttop, aluminum bracket, and running 225 johnson sitting on top of her... steal of the century i think, hopefully i can turn around te things i dont need to make my money back, anyone want a hull? gas tank? etc..
-
What size hull, and how much???
BTW - are you SURE you have a '72? I am 99% sure that the FB stopped in '71. Either way, good luck with your project, looks like you have a great boat to start with!
-
Well lilrichard its a pop off from a seacraft mold, a company called barcone. there were a couple different ones, a company called continental made one called a barcone thats similar but this one is simply barcone. looks to be a direct pop off from seacraft but they added a few inches and call it a 21. it'd be a probably a month or so until id be able to sell it i need to strip off what i need for the fb (bracket ttop steering and whatnot) my neighbor says hell give me a thousand for it so somewhere around there would be what id be looking to get, but i doubt he'll pull through with it. it needs a new transom and floor but under that it looked and felt good in the spots i can get to.
The fb didnt have a id number or anything so i dont really know what year it is, but the title says 72, and ive seen some other 72 fb's on the internet so who knows, ill stick with it...
Is there any way to tell what year(s) it was made? i.e. differences in the layout or anything, colors, etc.?
-
Not really - only way to know is if you have a hull ID (which may be on your title)? Not that it much matters - a FB is a FB!
Wish your hull was a 23! That is the nicest Seacraft EVER (IMHO).
-
finally got some funds for materials, been slow with the cold weather though. transom totally layed up ready to go in, and cap is being rebuilt . after these go in/on, stringer time begins. pics will be up soon..
-
Brother, you STOLE that trailer!!.....Makes poor ol' granny jealous....
-
ya i still dont believe i got it, one of those husband went to jail things, wife sold it to me haha

transom laid up- 2 sheets 3/4 marine vacuum bagged together with 1708 between, and 2 layers hand laid on each side afterward.

Pretty amazing, really.
Not a whole lot of cap removal (at least since I've been here).
-
wont let me post pic of the transom and stringers, says it must be 600 pixels high maximum? tried resizing but it didnt work, any solution?
-
Do you have the pic in a landscape view or portrait view? It needs to be in landscape or else its too tall. The 640 is 640 wide <---> and 480 tall.
-
Pretty amazing, really.
Not a whole lot of cap removal (at least since I've been here).
ya all the glass on the underside of the cap was dry as a bone, ground that down, filled the toe rails with foam and glue and glassed over it with some biax, now im recoring the front with some nida-foam. if i ever get some warm weather i can glass the other side of it. this weekend hopefully...
-
on getting the foam out of the stringers-
I just went through this, but the glass on my stringers is pretty good so I only cut the tops off so I could get the wet foam out.
Tried the paint stirring stick method, really messy & not as good as I'd hoped.
So I put a long blade on the sawzall, used a slow speed & carefully sliced along the stringers between the glass & foam from one end to the other, letting the blade bounce off the hull now & then. Then went & cut perpendicular through the foam about every 8 inches. Took a short wide pry bar and popped the foam out in nice little blocks, worked great, didn't leave any marks on the hull where the blade hit it, just gotta use some finesse.
The glass & foam for the outer stringers was trashed just where the side rod holders were mounted, from the lower screws letting water in over the years (1970 boat). Even the glass was rotten.
And from the factory the glass was put on the inner wall of the transom after the stringers were finished, sooo the foam in the stringers was in direct contact with the transom wood. Foam gets wet, water migrates to the back of the stringers, my transom was very wet & useless around the stringers where it needed to be attached the most. They almost got it right, if they had just put a layer of glass on the transom before the stringers were attached I think my transom would have been fine. The outer layer of wood was damp but still solid.
-
ya theyre all coming out once i get the transom back in and the cap back on, ill probably pull the 2 along the chines out first, then put a couple layers of glass along the chines, and get to replacing the other 3 with a nice grid
-
any idea what density foam was used in the stringers from the factory?
-
no idea, it really just takes up space inside the stringer. i can see where someone cut the tops out of a couple before and probably replaced some foam, but all the foam ive hit is pretty soft. and wet. i might have a line on some corecell to build the new ones out of though, well see.

Looking good! :thumright:
Its always amazing to see the light coming through the gunwales! Mine are the same way in places.
-
ya it does look kinda cool. id rather see finished paint on the outside though haha
-
cap glued and screwed on for good today, glassing to the inside of the hull this weekend hopefully...
-
Pretty amazing, really.
Not a whole lot of cap removal (at least since I've been here).
Looking back at page 1 of the rebuild, did you cut the cap off? I don't see the million screw holes along the edge?
-
The transom almost looks like it has a masonite outer in the pics :cyclops:
-
^no, there was only about a dozen screw holding it on, not glued or anything. theres a hole about every 8 inches, plus the holes i made when screwing it on. all filled with glue now thank god. did have to fair the top lip of the hull to get it sitting right, someone at the factory was a little sloppy when they trimmed it i guess.
-
The transom almost looks like it has a masonite outer in the pics :cyclops:
So what am I looking at on the outside of the transom? Are the pics of you laying in a new outer fiberglass skin? or is this the transom that you laminated together? Like I said, it looks like masonite. Maybe the marine plywood doesn't have much grain.
What's the next step? Lay glass across the entire back outside and down the sides of the hull where it's ground down?
-

yes its the one i laminated and bagged...
im not sure why itlooks like that, its 2 layers of biax over the ply so you cant really see the grain, and i think the sun being on it in the pic washes itout or something. next itll get glassed on the outside all the way around just like the inside, possibly a whole nother layer across the back after, keep some fairing work down possibly...

-
Nice progress man :salut:
Marc..
-
more progress: full layer of glass in the hull, overlapped in the keel, extending up past where the floor is going to be, and 3 layers to plug up the windows. 1" 5# corecell stringers cut out and ready to get glued and glassed in. also built a console. starting to look like something now...

time for bulkheads and tank(s) and fun stuff. nice to be putting stuff in the boat anyways

Wow, this is nice and clean :salut:
Marc..

trying to get rigging stuff squared away this weekend, then deck time hopefully
-
WORK LOOKS EXTRA CLEAN, HOW FAR FORWARD ARE YOU PUTTING THE FUEL TANK, ALSO WHERE DO YOU GET MOST OF YOUR GLASS MATERIAL?
-
thanks, its a shame it wont be seen haha. forward bulkhead for the fuel tank isright where the windows are, about where the skinniest part of the keel is between them. all the glass and epoxy comes from fiberglass supply depot in ft. pierce...

You are getting a terrific job. Very clean...is it OK to offer constructive criticism?...Would beef up the tabs, throw another layer of glass on the tabs, where it matters, for tie-in, for strength....particularly at the transom.
Please realize, you young boys are dealing with us old dummies here. We're old, we're dumb.
Fitz and I we're discussing last night the rebuilds here. His big question, where are the drains to the transom, with reference to the box construction.
Think of us as your dumb old Dads...hope that's OK.
I can recall that my Dad used to be dumb....but somehow, became smarter.
-
That is some of the cleanest work I've seen yet, nice job bro  :salut: :thumleft: .
what are those 3 rectangular blocks in the 3rd pic from the top?????
-
gran, which tabs are you meaning exactly? the wet ones going from the stringer tothe transom are just tieing in the knee glass to the stringer with 2 layers of 1708, under that the stringers are tabbed to the transom with 3 layers. the knees are more there for forming a box to hide rigging than anything. imagine that box in the middle, then im going to put a matching walkaround cap on it to tie it all in. although it will add strength too. every bulkhead has a pvc sleeved limber hole in it which will all drain to the stern, and into the bilge through the limbers where the stringer and transom meet (they are covered with wet glass in the picture) i dont plan on getting much water up under the floor so i will keep plugs in the holes going into the bilge, but youve gotta be able to drain itsomehow. thats funny i learned all this from my dad haha.
skoot, those are pads for pumps, thru hulls, or whatever...
-
i need about 7 feet of fuel fill hose, west marine is all back ordered and i refuse to pay normal price. if anyone has any laying they would like to get rid of let me know please...
-
Don't know if they have it in stock but here is another place. 6 bucks a ft.
http://www.marinesurplusinc.com/servlet ... ype/Detail (http://www.marinesurplusinc.com/servlet/the-9996/Fuel-Hose-USCG-Type/Detail)

thanks, just ordered from them. ronnie at marine connection is closed til the 31st anyway
-
couple pics before the deck goes in...

started making the cap on the rear. going to do a door between the knees rather than taking a false bulkhead all the way across to the sides
(http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy167/dirtwheelsfl/IMG_1393.jpg)
-
Wow....love those fat longitudinals. Going the extra mile. VERY strong. My old Simmons Sea Skiff was laid out exactly the same. The transom is sweet too...like the taper, for toe room down under.
This rebuild is and has been a pleasure to see evolve. Thanks for sharing.
-
I bet it feels good everyday when you're done and your work looks as good as that. :salut:
Don't forget that your poly tank will expand and swell more than an aluminum one. I had a buddy replace his aluminum with poly in an old bayliner I helped him rebuild and him being cheap used 3/8 ac ply for the sole. Summer comes along and his floor swelled up enough to pull the tabs off where someone( who shall go nameless) didn't grind enough. We ended up cutting the whole thing out and adding foam on top of the stringers then lammed a new sole so that tank could have enough room.
The way yours looks I don't think you will have that problem.
Looking good, getting closer everyday!
-
thanks guys. tank has an inch all the way around and plenty of room to the top of the deck. scrap corecell cleats are going to hold it in position along with a few spots of 5200 and some sort ofstraps going across the top. what you cant see is the "coffin" under it. sheet of 1/4" ply glassed on both sides shimmed to the hull curves and tilted forward some to hit the pickups. should be plenty of room for expansion... longitudinals are 1x4 clear fir for the seams of the plywood deck to rest rather than making a hundred butt blocks, plus strength..
-
So there you go....NICE work.
-
Clean work. My only suggestion would be to make the back cap wider... gives you more room for stuff (pumps, filters, etc).
-
ya i thought about it rich, but id rather have the room inside the boat. its about 10" wide at the top. ill have a nice big bilge hatch right in front of it, and another door for that section to get to rigging and crap...
-
suffering from project burnout lately. everything underneath ready for the deck to go on. tank secured in its coffin, couple hatch lips glassed into the deck, along wiht a layer of glass on the underside. going with 1/2 in ply...
-
Did you make the hatch lips or buy them?
Matt
-
^ made em. ive got one over the fuel tank fittings that ill make a clear lexan hatch for, this is gonna be screwed down and sealed so its semi permanent. and i made one about 20x22 or so for the bilge. gonna rely on a seal and tight latch(es) to keep water out. i took some 3 inch wide 1708 and layed up 4 layers, offsetting the joints in the corners so the corners dont get built up, then glued em to the underside and glassed with 2 more progressive size layers of 1708. ill see if i can get a pic up...i wanted to buy some, but it was $$ for ncie ones and i hate those damn plastic ones
-
Boats looking good!
I've been pricing fiberglass hatches too and its crazy what they want for them. Someone has to have a drain channel mold or drain channel we can buy.
My buddies boat (a 26ft Goldline he built) has a few of the cheap plastic hatches in the deck and they are garbage, cracking after just a few months.
What are you thinking for your layout and hatches on your forward casting platform?
Matt
-
tank in
(http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy167/dirtwheelsfl/IMG_1407.jpg)
matt heres the hatch lips, pvc pipe clamps held it while the glue cured.
heres how they got laid up, but with 4 layers, gotta offset the joints so the corners dont get built up.
then 2 more layers going from the edge of the lip out onto the undersid eof the deck. ending up with 6 layers total.
im not gonna do a platform up front anymore, im gonna put a bulkhead about a foot aft of where the cap is and run a small "deck" from bulkhead to cap. probably gonna cut that big lip on the cap so that the "deck" is on the same plane as the rest of the gunnel up there (in between the inner and outer lips) this will give a place for anchors and sh** and ill still have around 7 feet between the front of the console and the bulkhead for fishboxes..
-
Strong. Like the tank tie-downs and through bolts. Structural strength on the bedding, and the frames.....good stuff.
-
Wow! Great craftsmanship! Clean work! And I thought I was particular! Can't imagine your love of this hull after all this cash and time. Really appreciate all your photos. Keep them coming. :salut: Capt Rick.
-
thanks capt rick.
managed to screw and glue a section of floor in tonite...
with any luck ill have the rest in by the weekend

Wow   What a great job so far. Great to see it from the start, keep up the good work, we'll be watching for the finished product. Thanks for the show. :salut: :salut:

glued and screwed, ready for glass. full layer of 1708 incorporating tabs into the hull, then another 10" tab of 1708.
shot of rigging access. there will be a hinged door there eventually. dark spots are pvc/epoxy/sawdust crush sleeves in the corecell where cleats will be mounted
(http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy167/dirtwheelsfl/IMG_1521.jpg)
-
I apologize if I overlooked it, but you did glass that floor on the underside, correct? What did you use?
Looking good otherwise!
-
1708 on each side
-
she is looking better and better every post. I like the layout without the casting platform, Will there be storage under the floor in the bow?
Matt
-
no, just the locker thats formed when i put that bulkhead across about a foot behind the rear lip of the cap. should be plenty for an anchor and whatever i need. i thought about it because i hate wasting space, but the work and time i would need to have underdeck storage werent worth the little bit of storage i would actually end up with if that makes any sense. eventually i plan on some type of semi permanent platform up there to castnet from though. meanwhile, glassing time has been hard to come by. epoxy doesnt like these cool dewy nights. majority of my work happens in the evenings.
-
just picked up a porta bracket, $750. gotta love craigslist..
-
been REAL lazy on the boat lately. managed to glass the deck and put a boweye and some scuppers in, also put her on the trailer. next comes the rear cap, then front anchor bulkhead/cap extension, then vertical under gunnel supports. then comes flipping, sanding, and painting... hopefully the bottom wont be as bad as lilrichards

demo officially done

stay tuned...
-
Looking good, getting the deck in is such a huge step or at least seems like its about the half way point.
whats the plan with the bow cap?
Let me know how that flipping over thing goes, mine needs to turn turtle soon too
Matt
-
where the toe rail is cut on each side of the cap is where the bulkheads gonna go, then that front deck gets extended back to it. you can see in the first pic where im gonna flip her, right in front of the airboat. gonna roll it from the grass onto the driveway
-
Just people power to flip her then?
My buddy has a front end loader but people power seems a more gentle way to go.
Keep up the good work, I'm catching up lol
-
ya a 12 pack oughta get it done
-
been doing sme work on the rear cap...

heres a shot of the cap/transom connection. ran a piece of 3/4 ply about 3 feet up the under side of the gunnel, all glued and glassed underneath and screwed/glued the rear cap to that and then glassed it all together. this really straightened and aligned the original gunnels with the rest of what i put back there.

looks pretty straight to me...

ya the nidafoam im using has its ups and downs. the material itself is real tough and doesnt really sand worth a crap, and the sheets have seams were they were welded together about every 2", but once you get some glass on it its real stiff. probably about as stiff as their honeycomb panels. i figured the bulkhead and deck extension was the best use of space i had, still gonna have about 7 feet from the bulkhead to the console, same with the rear cap and the back of the console. i dont really like permanent fixtures on the floor ya know, i like "modular" deck alyouts... youre having a boat being rebuilt right now right?
-
Good to see your back at it! She is looking good
Been too busy here fishing to work on my FB for over a month now. Have been buying all the goodies though so when I do have time I have lots of hardware, paint etc.
Keep it up

Yep, sure am dirtwheels...the tank should be going in any day now. The cap is off and is being filled and faired.
Did you raise your floor? Guess could go back and search, but that was probably a good while back....thanks.
-
ya gran, raised it about an inch and 3/4 if i remember right.
i hear that matt, ive been going to school in orlando and have only been working on it about every other weekend...buying things as you go makes it seem like youre not putting that much in it either, ha.

deck glassed in.. 3 layers of 1708 on top, 2 tabbing into the bulkhead. underside will get done when the boat is upside down.

you can kinda see the camber in the bulkhead here. matching foam toerail will go on top of that.
this pic is for gran, showing how the garboard drain is set up. no screws in the wood!

Lookin' good!!
Will you be leaving the bottom paint?
-
hell no... whole boats getting awlgrip. matterhorn white with light gray nonskid
-
Good deal....is the plan to strip the anti-fouling etc. with soda-blast?
-
no, its really old and flaky and thin so im just gonna take the 8" to it. theres a couple layers of topside paint over the original gel im taking off though so thats where my times gonna be i think...
-
Dude, look up wet sandblasting. You don't wanna breath that :*:, it's bad stuff!

My vote goes with the graybeard....No telling what funk you could experience four layers down.
Go with the soda-blast.....its cheap. And they come to you.
Thanks LilRichard. You've been here a helluva long time...glad you're back. Make it permanent.
-
I'm always close, I am just a lurker now! I'll post up stuff whenever I think I can add value. Otherwise I just watch the cool rebuilds...
Wish the spring gathering was not the date it is, I am already paid to be at Jennings GP all weekend.

transom wrapped
(http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy167/dirtwheelsfl/IMG_1969.jpg)
before filling: bottom is not that bad really.... the last 5 feet or so had an s shape to it fore and aft, got the high spots grinded down now just need to fill
(http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy167/dirtwheelsfl/IMG_1971.jpg)
nice split. already have3 layers of 1708 on the inside of this

stem already has been worked on, and is surprisingly solid.
keel is a mess, had about a 3/4" curve to it the last couple feet, real wavy up past the windows too. going to take the stroke sander all the way down it . and replace that section with come corecell
(http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy167/dirtwheelsfl/IMG_1975.jpg)
-
Looks like a lot of the same stuff I encountered. You're getting closer!
-
ya it looks like shes had a few meetings with the bottom in the last 40yrs!
-
Very cool you have her upside down, Now what seems like the never ending sanding starts, I thought mine would be turned turtle for only a week or two max, but its been two months now. Seems like a vicious circle of putting expensive material on then sanding it right back off. I quit taking pictures until the paint is done, Its just going so slow going its driving me crazy, seems I sand for hours and see very little progress. If there is one thing this rebuild is teaching me its patience.
Don't let it bring you down.
What are you using to do the faring with? The awlgrip 2 part faring compound is awesome.
extending that keel?
She is looking good and your catching up again
Matt
-
ya nobody ever sees progress until paint is on it! 22ft is nothing compared to what im used to though, and im not looking for yacht quality either, as long as the bottom is nice and straight im fine. very little fairing on the top either, just probably the rear part of the cap and the deck up front, and the transom/hullside joint of course. for compound i mix the 2:1 epoxy with about 2:3 cabosil and micro balloons, depending on how thick i want it, or what kind of sandability i want. i thought about extending the keel but im just going to keep it how it was, i might gradually bring it down to nothing though instead of having it run full height all the way to the end, well see...
-
DW - Might I suggest you reconsider the keel extension? It makes a big difference on the handling of these boats - they slide bad enough WITH the extension, without...
-
White paint hides alot too, its not like trying to prep to paint black.
Capt Matt

well rich i managed to get ahold of a perfect piece of corecell to do that with, its about 18" past the original. looks about right now that im looking at it.. probably gonna throw the vacuum to it when i laminate it.
this area had a split and delam on the chine/hullside. 2 layers of 1708.

first round of filling blisters next will be fairing compound

Are you using an air file? A straight sander used in body shops - I guess about 15 inches long. Would save you some time until the finish coats.

I would not do a boat without an inline sander - that thing is worth its weight in gold... as long as you know how to use it properly!
-
ya ive got a 5 foot or so handboard for big areas like that just to knock the high spots down and show me where to fill. pneumatic stroke sander wont come in until its pretty close to flat. a few hours with the grinder and all the gel is gone... at least waterline and below, its fine above the waterline. got some interprotect 2000 leftover from my uncles boat to coat all the bare glass with, then whole boats getting high build, 545 and topcoat

And have the CFM available - gotta have a bigger compressor otherwise you're waiting a lot.

Looks great. Hate you had to go past the gel to dig out what was shown previously...but you pulled it out by the roots..like extracting a bad tooth/teeth
Good work...and for sure you didn't cut corners.
Presume you're going back with gel on the hull bottom?
My rebuilder says that way back..it was a numbers production thing....some resin didn't set off...others were too hot....my rebuild has basically shrunk a sixteeth all around over the course of 38 years...she ought to be set-up by now

just about leveled out...

-
Looking good!
How thick is your fairing compound on the bottom?
-
thicker than id like it ya know, but that area is so stout from the tabbing and extra glass on the inside that it shouldnt be an issue, especially with how strong this epoxy is. theres 3 skims over it right now, and its actually a little proud of where it needs to be. i used a long piece of aluminum angle to spread it from the keel out and it started to drag on me being so hot out, so ive got some small lines and holes to fill still. then all the fresh glass on the keel. hopefully have that about done this weekend... figure out when youre headed this way?
-
I'll be over that way the weekend of the 23rd.
One thought, to avoid any flexing issues (cracking) you might put a layer of thin mat / cloth over that epoxy filler. I dunno if that is an "accepted practice", but seems like it couldn't hurt...
-
ehhh, i thought about it but i just dont think it would be of any benefit, other than to make more fairing work to fill in the weave. if anything comes apart its going to be the original first layers of mat in the bottom of the hull. this epoxy bond is not only strong, but flexible to a point... ya ill be around the 23rd pm me your plans and whatnot and well figure something out...

NICE work. The keel work especially...like that you brought her forward to the bow-eye area.
Should make a difference in how she tracks, especially in heavy slop.
You're almost there...this last little bit will be tough, 'cause you're chomping at the bit but...as we all know, paint is 95% prep.
My guy is using a black coating in between hull sandings (raising the grit) to easily show the high/low spots. Don't know what its called...but effective. Almost like how they use candle smoke to fit fine shotguns.
You guys ever seen it used?
-
Scott, its called a "guide coat". We use it all the time painting cars. A lot of guys use the cheapest Walmart brand black spray can they can buy. 3M has a canister of something like lampblack powder with a special applicator that looks like a wax sponge applicator. They say it works better because you are not spraying some unknown solvent on the job that might cause contamination.

-
I've seen black spray paint used as a "guide coat"you spray it on and use it to see low spots as you sand with a long block sander
-
Thanks guys. My rebuilder has been and is a perfectionist. One reason why its taking so long. Really don't care. Can ride/fish/eat chicken anytime, other options. Looking now like end of October to complete the structural rebuild. First of November to begin rigging.
Dirtwheels, thanks for this side-step. The guidance the boys have given is worthwhile to all. Thanks guys.
-
agreed paint is 95% prep but 100% more enjoyable than grinding glass!
ya a faint mist of black spray paint will go on the hullsides. i like to use the ridges of fairing compound left by the knife on the bottom to guide there.
-
been real busy but finally got some primer on. had some interprotect 2000 laying around from a bottom job on my uncles boat so i put it to use. i like to use it as a good thick first coat over raw fairing below the waterline. picking up some 545 next week for the best price.... goal is to be right side up by christmas.

Just the primer looks awesome. Nice to see her in one color
Capt Matt
-
well shortly after i sprayed this 545, i talked to my dad on the phone who was down in big pine key, and asked me how it went and so on. i told him good except a couple of gun scrapes where the gun hit the wet paint.
about an hour later a stranger calls my phone saying he was unconscience in the grocery store getting chest compressions. he passed almost instantly.
without him i would not be here. he taught me everything i know, especially boatbuilding. this boat will be known as the joey valentine.

Dirt,
God Bless your father, and bless the legacy he left behind, which is you, my friend, and others he touched throughout his life. Your father goes with God now...
Jesus promised us eternal life. You are now seeing that promise come true, as it always does. Your father will live on through you, through your children, through the lives that he touched, and affected. Always, always remember that. I have a Crescent wrench, from the original Crescent tool company. Must be getting close to 100 years old now. My grandfather's. My Dad gave it to me when he no longer felt like messing around with oil changes, fixing stuff, that sort of thing. Now I do it. I go over to the folks, my Dad watches me (has to make sure I'm doing things right!), and I show him the old Crescent wrench. He takes it from me, and I can see that look of him thinking about his Dad. And when I hold it, I think about my grandfather, and my Dad...
And they live on, and on. You sir, have your boat...and you will have many a memorable trip with your Dad... :salut: :salut: :salut:

Sorry for your loss. Tough thing to happen at this time of year. When you get this thing splashed he will be beside you at the helm wanting to know which way to go, so close your eyes and listen. He will be that little voice saying " why don't we go that way".
My prayers are with you man.

Sorry to hear about your loss..My Dad passed last year and it's hard I know. I'm sure he's very proud of the your talent and first class work you do, it shows..Good Luck..

looking good bro!hope you are doing ok :)
-
Beautiful!
Am with Pete. Hope you are doing ok.
Best to you from all of us.
The boat is a work of art.
-
In the next set of pictures she should be upright!, that seemed to be the biggest step for me. Everything went quickly then.
Hope things are getting a little better
Capt Matt
-
thanks guys, still not quite set in but...
how many people it take to flip yours matt? im thinking 8 people can handle it. lift it, pull the trailer out, set it down, flip, then lift back onto the trailer. this thing cant weigh but 1200# or so...
-
My buddies dad has a palm tree farm so we used 2 big wide tree straps on a big front end loader, it made it real easy with two people spinning the boat over as it hung above the trailer. If your doing the man power method 8 people will do it though, it will be easy and gentle roll. Lay a bunch of old blankets and or pillows on the ground to sit the gunnel onto. It took 6 of us to flip mine upside down and then to lift it on the trailer before I did the bottom work. Two extra people will really make for easy lifting.
Good luck with the roll over
Capt Matt
-
ya me and my dad got it upside down with a swingset in the yard made of dock pilings and a 6x10, and a come along. not gonna work with fresh paint though! got a buddy with a carpet shop so scraps to roll her onto are easy to come by. things should start rollin now that im done with school...
-
The straps where really wide and padded and did not mark the fresh paint at all. With wide straps you could wrap them with carpet. Your right though people power is probably the safest and most gently way. You don't want to scuff that pretty paint
Capt Matt
-
Looks like you sprayed Awlgrip on your bottom as well..I was going to do that too, but I was told that Awlgrip was not recomended for the bottom , that it should be gelcoat...so many opinions...
Just gelcoated mine today..Good Luck....
-
gelcoat will give you more abrasion protection, but you cant gel over epoxy. this whole boat is done with epoxy. awlgrip is fine for a bottom as long as its not in the water for long periods.
but yeah there are so many different opinions and ways to do things, yoou just have to do what youre comfortable with or want i guess. ive sparingly worked with poly and gel, but especially on a rebuild its going to be epoxy and paint.

just using that t top for a pattern. going to put a nidacore hardtop on top of the sides...
thats 20mm prelaminated nidacore sides by the way, and half inch ab marine for the front. quicker and easier to build a big door in the front with wood.
-
Hull looks great! Pilot house? Looks very interesting! Can not wait to see the finished product. :salut:
-
Great paint!! The pilothouse looks nice and clean too!
Is that a 20 Seacraft in the background?
-
I hadn't been following your build in a while. I just read about your dad. I'm so sorry to hear that. I know from experience there is little anyone can say to hep with such a painful loss. Tuesday marked the 17 years ago to the day that I lost my dad to pancreatic cancer and it still hurts but time does help. I was only 24 at the time and it totally changed the course of my life. To this day I still miss his "stamp of approval" on my many projects. I know my dad would have been proud and I am certain your dad is proud of you. You are doing a fantastic job on this build. I'm sure you learned much from him and that will stay with you for the rest of your life. When you get your flat back out on the water for the first time your dad will be there right beside you. Keep up the good work.
-
Wing speaks words of wisdom. My father passed 19 months ago and it is definitely tuff. But there are also days when remembering him makes me happy. One day at a time my friend.
-
Ok..That makes sense...My 222 is a 1987 and the bottom gelcoat was in very good shape after I sanded the bottom paint off (last time I do that!), prepped sprayed new gelcoat over the old gelcoat..no epoxy..I do not have much experience with gelcoat and Awlgrip. I'm working with an experienced fiberglass guy that told me the same as you said, that Alwgrip is ok on the bottom. just can't leave it in the water for long periods of time. Just asking..Looking Good...
I'm thinking about an Awlcraft color for the hull called Bright Atlantic Blue Metalic..Have you ever worked with this paint..I'm told is hard to work with..
I saw this color on a Jupiter and really liked it...
-
If you go to my post unber rebuilds "Starting 1987 Osprey222 project" page 3 ..I have pics posted of the bottom...
-
thanks guys...
scott thats a 21' barcone, chine up its almost identical to a seacraft but the bottom is different, only has one strake and kind of a reverse chine thing goin on.
sitting in that boat is a banks monster exhaust for a 2nd gen dodge cummins longbed if anyone is interested by the way, just pulled it off my new old truck.
305king- ive worked with awlcraft before but only a couple times, it seemed to behave like awlgrip, but when cured its a softer paint. im sure you know you can wetsand/buff it afterwards, which is nice..
-
double taped in and out with 1700. i like using biax without the matt when glassing to smooth surfaces, plus it was only a dollar a yard. sometimes ill put 1708 matt side up to have that layer of matt to sand down, but this 1700 is really tight weave, probably not even gonna fill it. open edges of that nida will have strips of h80 divinycell glued on and radiused, then wrapped in 1700. i find that much quicker and easier than cutting cells out and filling with whatever then rounding off and wrapping like ive seen some people do.
scott heres that other boat. not a bad looking hull but needs stringers and everything. thinking about chopping the sides down and making a flatty one day. i just bought it for the trailer pretty much.

got her right side up on sunday. took a few pics of the house placement. not the actual roof or size, its actually a piece of countertop i use to wet glass out on, just there for visual.

Man, the pilothouse really makes the boat come to life  . I've always liked the idea of a pilothouse. One day I'll have one on my rig.
Lookin' great! :thumleft:

Ditto :thumleft:
(sorry I've waited a long time to use that  )
I'm a big pilot house fan and would really like to have the original factory Aqua enclosure on my 91 WAC. 8)
Lookin' good and keep the porn coming.
-
Looks great! Thanks for the other pic too....sorta does look like a Seacraft.
-
Looks good. Being in Tampa, I see boats shaped like these AS's all day, everyday...not like this one though! Glad to see something different...
-
layed up the topside of the hardtop this afternoon. 2 layers of 1700. built a jig out of 2x4s and styrofoam shaped to a 1 3/4" crown in the middle. then clamped the outside edges down under a 90degree batten to keep em nice and straight (gravity didnt do it for me)
using a product called plascore. nidacore can kiss my you know what. seems better quality and has more cells per sq in. than the nida. well see how it goes.
i usually do the bottom side of a crowned piece first because jigs are easier to build but i wanted to have the bottom clean for a router to take material out to the depth of the top skin so i can lay in pvc rigging tubes, then glass them over. half round pvc will go in the corners of the house and go up to the pipe inside the top. then down into the console part.

looks like alot of curve here, but its an illusion.
-
about to lay up the underside of the hardtop, still need to bed in some pvc board cores for antennas and whatnot
(http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy167/dirtwheelsfl/Snapbucket/1BC4A22D.jpg)
got some work done on the console. still needs a rear panel and enclose the top area. helm section is 2 pieces of 1/2" ply. quarter round section of 4" pvc in the corners.

Wow........ :D :D
Where are the mongo Bose speakers gonna go?
-
jl audios. 6 ten inch ones, two on each side, and two on the front haha.
-
got some things done this afternoon
underside of the top layed up with pvc board pads glassed in. stupid elbows were thicker than the core so i had to grind em flush, but ended up with holes in the pipe in a couple spots, blue tape just to keep epoxy outa the pipe.
glassed this in too. why the point i dont know, just thought it would look cool..

If you ran the leading edge out about 6" to a point with a little rake and angle on it you would have a wave break like the NorthWestern   (cue Bon Jovi: Dead or Alive)
-
I'm really liking all the bow storage and one level deck. She will be one of a kind
Capt Matt
-
Thumbs up on the single level deck. Great for safety too.
-
Yea i cant stand having to deal with a stepped deck and its big enough to throw a net off of. More room for stuff between the console and forward too...
-
Yea i cant stand having to deal with a stepped deck and its big enough to throw a net off of. More room for stuff between the console and forward too...
Exactly. Lot to be said for throwing a big castnet from a safe venue. Especially in the ocean.
-
I'm also a fan of the deck, mostly for the open space. It would be a similar setup as the CCP. A certain manufacturer calls that a "Fly Fishing Deck", and having fly fished before in an inshore boat that size, it works well. That would be a real nice anchor locker too, with plenty of room for rode.

got some white ebond over about all raw glasswork. still have to do a couple things on the rear. its a thin epoxy paint that gets real hard. i like to put it over all my raw glass. everywhere that isnt getting nonskid will get an epoxy primer before the awlgrip. going to try some stuff my glass supplier is pushing on me called "nauticote". supposed to be like a 545, and its the right price so...
debating on non skid color though, light gray or a real light green kinda like an aquamist. any opinions?

Love my toe recess too, its the little things in life
Capt Matt

the little things take alot of time too it seems. im ready to float this thing!

drilling and sealing holes lately. bracket, helm, cleats, etc. and some original 19 robalo hawse pipes! love the old look.

I concur.
The pipe with the cleat below is a nice touch. Loved it on the CCP.
Looks great on your rebuild. :thumleft:

Excellent Dirt! Look forward to the final product.

Dirt, she's a honey, must keep singing praises.
Can't wait to see that girl in the salt.
Keep posting :thumright:
-
thanks guys. getting little things done after work..
sleeving bracket mounting holes. paddle bit goes as deep as the inside skin then pipe goes in with thickened epoxy. going to have to grind some around the sleeves and cap with glass on the outside. i would have rather saved the outside skin but drill wouldnt fit on the inside. it is what it is, the bracket will cover it at least.

The top for the pilot house came out beautiful. Solid work; that thing is a piece of art, and you can just see the man hours that you've no doubt got tied up in building it. :salut:

Thanks aggie. Itll all be worth it in the end!

Summer hasnt been too productive for finishing the boat, but got alot of traveling in to be fair. Boat is now ready for topcoat on the topsides after a couple rounds of white 545. Cap and phone booth will get sprayed, and going to roll n tip the hullsides and spots on the deck that need it. Going light seafoam kinda color with nonskid.

Great job Chris. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

Awlgrip matterhorn white
-
That is looking sweet, dirt! Makes me want to go out and grind some glass on my project right now!
-
Looking good. Must have got the intrepid moved out of the spray booth.
-
Chris the fairing and curves on the top of the stern are xxx rated.. Damn!
Have you kept track of your time fairing or don't you want to know? It would be interesting to know, that way someone without a clue how, but the desire to acheave that finish would be able to multiply your time by about 5 and get an idea of how long it would take them..
Another piece of CAS fine art..... :salut:
-
Yep got the intrepid out for a whole week  On its way back for nonskid and rerigging now. Got a buncha pictures to put up.
Fairing time? What i thought x 2 haha. Caps still full of waves and dips but thats not my fault. As long as its shiny im happy!
-
Just beautiful! I'm with Dave...an absolute work of art!
-
Looks great! Like you stated interior hull sides, non-skid, then rigging. You got power already?
-
Only thing im missing is power! Have been collecting everything else for awhile. Need to take my bracket up to Porta and have it recoated to match too (original silver is peeling off anyway). I tried taking it apart to do it myself, but some of the pieces are 52 million'd together. Oh and they said they slide the hinge surfaces into each other with a 20k hydraulic press. She said they've never taken one apart to redo so well see how that goes!
-
Which flavor are you leaning toward on power?
-
Back in Black?
-
Only way black is going on is if someone gives me a suzuki! Haha. Like to do a 150 etec. Need to get some funds together first....

Did some painting Friday. Couple runs but only ill notice em...
Didn't think the supports on the sides would be intrusive toe killers, but a few kicks and I cut them down.

S'mo progress! Got final paint in all the compartments, starting on the nonskid.
Theyre both custom tinted Sherwin Williams products actually. Tile Clad epoxy in the negative spaces and a 6:1 product called "Acrolon" for the nonskid. So far I like it, rolls nice, kinda thick and dries relatively fast...

Rolled some more white e-bond on the sole too (same stuff in Ricks bilge). Couple years of working in the boat/sun got to the original application... Soon as that's cured I can finish the nonskid.

Dirt, that looks beeyootifulll! But I gots a question for ya's. How do you think the (I'll call it seafoam) green non-skid is gonna hold up with people walking on it? I know I walk on gunnels, transoms, all sorts of places normal folks don't walk. Durability? Washability? Just wondering, 'cause it looks too pretty to walk on, but, they are non-skid surfaces...
-
Looks really nice Chris :salut:
-
How do you think the (I'll call it seafoam) green non-skid is gonna hold up with people walking on it? Durability? Washability?
How is the "seafoam" pigment any different than white as far as durability/cleaning?
I would think the type/quality/composition of the paint is a bigger factor than the tint.
Besides, what shows dirt/stains more than white?
-
Well Bob, just some thoughts...
What I have seen with rolled/brushed on sand-type texture non-skids is that they are hard to clean, due to the myriad of surfaces that the "sand" poses to the cleaner, and that they tend to "soil" more easily than the molded in diamond pattern non-skids. This may be due to the material used, the lack of proper protection applied to this type of non-skid surface such as applicable waxes, etc., lack of proper curing to where the skin surface still has some adhesion characteristics...
It could also be that Chris has chosen this color to present an excellent contrast to the hull/deck color, and it would be a shame to have that contrast marred by dirt accumulation on the seafoam green non-skid surfaces that would take away from the otherwise beautiful look of the boat and it's colors.
It could also have to do with the Hurricanes getting their butts kicked in a lesser tier bowl game...
-
Mom went to FSU, uncle went to UF so i root for both haha. Never been a cane fan...
Paint cleans easier than diamond gelcoat if ya ask me. Let some blood dry on that stuff n youre screwed. Brush it right off with paint usually, even after baking in the sun for hours. id think the porosity in gelcoat is why its harder to keep clean. I agree that the green will probably look dirtier than a gray or something but ill deal with it...
We'll see how this paint holds up. The numbers on it seem pretty good (not that i know what they all mean exactly) but ive hear good things. "Gooier" n thicker than an awlgrip or whatever... And cheaper!!
Oh color is called "waterfall". Real manly
-
Manly or not, it looks awesome!
-
Nice!!
Go with Woody Wax as soon as it cures out. Dirt and stains wash right off :thumright:
-
Chris, that 'Canes bit wasn't directed at you...

While that is very logical, my point was the color really isn't a factor as much as the type paint.
it would be a shame to have that contrast marred by dirt accumulation on the seafoam green non-skid surfaces.
Hopefully he won't walk on it as much as you would.

If you mean that NFL Scouts Tryout scrimmage in Orlando, your right. Fitting that the guy (and his partner in crime) would first commit to the U but later "un-commit" was just the direction our program was headed in those days. He's still well revered in Miami and would have made a huge impact on the program but hey......
What could have been.....was. 8)
PS...Dirt, sorry for the steal but if it helps, my son went to FSU so we root for the Noles too.
Boat looks great and as stated before, I love the pilothouse. :thumright:
-
Steal away, doesnt bother me a bit!
This boat will be used plenty hard. Scratches dings etc really wont bother me. After a lil bit of time anyway haha. If it doesnt come up with a scrub brush n some good soap, then itll become part of the boat til i feel like scraping it off...
Dirty boats are cooler anyway :afro:

-
Chris that is hole package is lookin mighty fine and the phone booth is the chiz! Are you going to do something like Scotty did for battery switches on Miss D for easy access?
-
No, goin inside the console. Actually the plan right now is to put all the switches (im using circuit breakers) inside the console, except maybe a bilge pump toggle. I originally popped a flush mount recessed piece to mount the switches on the vertical face of the console right above the door, but i got a lil too excited about the big door access that i cut it too tall and dont have the room for it. I still might end up doing it there but will have to get creative. Ive already made a piece to hold all the switches vertically on the inside so ill probably just do that. The way the door is, its got dogs on the backside so when unlatched it folds down about 1/3 of the way til the dogs catch, which is plenty to reach down and flip a switch. We'll see...
-
Top notch, dirt! Looking great! Sorry, but no rubrail laying around here. What type of insert is it going to get?
-
Gorgeous....love the teak too :thumright:

Really coming together Chris - sweet looking :salut:
Nice door on the front of the console. Have pics of the build and install of it?

Just a flexible black one like the last picture...

Its actually a cousin called ipe (e-pay). I think its Spanish for "tool ruiner" haha. Gonna do a footrest on the console door out of it too..
Really coming together Chris - sweet looking :salut:
Nice door on the front of the console. Have pics of the build and install of it?
Ill get some today. Its basically the cutout with some flanges glassed on the outside edges.
-
Heres the door. The dogs are just some pvc board glued and screwed. Fine tuned to fit. Don't mind the seasick jigsaw cuts :drunken: Might do some kind of take apart hinge if it doesn't work exactly how I want it...

That's OEM for the CCP model console door.
Looks great and you can move it out of the way when working underneath.
No popped hinges from lying on it. :thumleft:

Man oh man!!
Good lookin'! Like the color combo too. And the single Morse is a classic touch.
The pilothouse looks like a factory option.....Great work bro :thumright:

1" 5# Corecell. Got it cheap from a boatbuilder buddy who got it thru Merritt Supply...

Looking good man.

Cracked a bottle over the bow last Saturday! (supposed to be a video) (http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy167/dirtwheelsfl/Snapbucket/th_DF98B075-0483-4A91-BB2F-9FC8FCAF40F8_zps2rkgkdls.mp4) (http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy167/dirtwheelsfl/Snapbucket/DF98B075-0483-4A91-BB2F-9FC8FCAF40F8_zps2rkgkdls.mp4)

I'd be afraid of scratching the boat!

Very impressed with how the boat runs, much smoother than other flatbacks ive been on... the Porta is a must have to get the attitude right. Get the bow down and she just goes (she likes weight forward for sure). Super efficient and hauls weight like nothing with the 4 blade that's on it, nice low speed cruise... My uncle who used to run one at the OMC test center said the little keel extension made a world of difference in the sliding they always had.
Only negative I have is the scuppers pull in water so ive been using some plugs for now...
Towed her to the Bahamas Tuesday, got back last nite.
Handpainted

Where does the pump hose come through the deck? Those bugs look happy, at the time anyway ;-)

Interesting...kinda like an extended duckbill. Is that something that is made for this purpose? Or did you invent it?
-
Its just some floppy blue hose that's used on water pump discharges. Got the idea from my buddy who has some on his kingfish boat. He saw some on a coast guard boat and tried it out. Just popped in gear is enough to get them flowing!
-
Nice I'll have to keep those in mind

Simple and effective :thumleft:
Did you glue in a smaller piece of PVC to clamp onto?

They are called scupper trunks, Zodiac has been using them for years.

That's good info since we always have people complaining about getting wet feet - so here's the fix (unless they are $1M each  )

Neighbor does pools so hose was free, got 5 bucks in hose clamps :great02:
