Title: how much HP for '96 200 osprey
Post by: Aswaff400 on April 07, 2009, 06:58:41 PM
im planing on replacing the 112 thats on it at the end of the summer, i know the hp rating is 150 but can it handle a 175 or 200? i see some on the site that have a 196 with 200hp... im not worried about the extra weight, the scuppers are about 3-4 inches above the waterline. the transom is solid and dry

Don't go over rated HP if you want to keep it insured.

Also remember that some 150 motors use the same block as the 200.  What this means is that you get more than 150, even with 150 on the cowl.  As an example, at least 1 company used to rate their 150 at 5000 RPM, and their 200 at 5800.  The difference in the actual motors was very small - almost any motor turns more HP at higher RPM.  It was a clever way of getting someone to pay for the extra 50 HP, even though the motors were almost identical.

So shop around a bit - check specs - note torque readings in addition to HP.  Remember torque gives you acceleration; HP gives you top speed.  If the torque readings for a 150 and a 200 are about the same, guess what?  Find a 150 with some solid torque numbers and I think you will be happy.   :salut:

Good luck and see ya on the water!

I think the only difference between the Merc 150 and 200 is some carburation changes and a little head work.  Other than that they weigh the same and look identical.

It does not matter what you put on it - as long as you have the right decals!!!

i believe the older ones are the same? but i know the newer 150's are a 2.5L block and the 200 is a 3.0L, im leaning towards a 200hp Merc on a bob's jackplate...

or a 250?    JKJK lol

and yes, racing decals do make anything go faster

*goes to racing decal store*

how fast would the boat go with a 200, and propped right?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I have a 150 Johnson on my 200 Osprey, and see 44 mph on the GPS, max. I think it would go a little faster if I removed my whale tail since it is still slightly in the water even on plane and trimmed up.

If I were buying a new engine, I personally would go for the 130 ETEC. It's a 4 cylinder so it would be lightweight, but probably just as fast as an old 150.

I believe my plate says the hull is rated for 185 hp. Mine is an '87.
