i am going to paint the top half of my boat very soon. what would be the best method of doing this?spraying it is out of the question.

Thats what I did and it came out GREAT. Some on here will recommend the two stage paint, however I allowed my single stage paint to dry a week between coats and it came out very hard. I am pleased. Also, if you scratch the single stage paint it is a breeze to touchup....no mixing required, no 3-4 hour pot-life to worry about, no waste from mixing too much paint/hardener, easy to apply for the first-timer working solo in the backyard.
The two part paints offer better hardness and longer life, but they are almost twice the cost of single part polyurethane and are more geared to the professional who will be spraying.
Just my opinion; I am sure that others will chime in.
Have fun painting. Take your time estimate and multiply by 3X. And remember, no matter what paint you use, its 99% preparation - 8)

I know this post was a while back but would you happen to have any pictures of your boat with the new paint job. I am considering doing the same myself and would love to see your outcome. I have a 19.6 which was used as a dock-boat and has the scars to prove it. I figured if I fill them in sand and paint it would bring the boat back to its previous glory!

I highly recommend looking into petit's easyposy one part topside paint as well. I used it to re paint the transom and console on my mako for same reasons....scars and filler and marks. Came out awsome....just be sure to tip all and any drips. Finish looks very close to gelcoat at a fraction of the cost and holds up well.
