I know all the answeres are here, aand I have looked back a couple of years worth of posts. i bought this boat at a great price and am thinking of a total refurb. She has a soft spot forward and of course over the fuel tank. I have specific questions, but hate to ask questions you have seen over and over. Is there a specific expert i could pm? , or should I fire away here? Thanks in advance. GK

Really though, fire away. You've stumbled on to the "glory hole" of ancient men with classic S. Fla. hulls.

Reason we don't have many members with CCPs is it seems they only made about 8 CCPs and they are all owned by people on this site. The owners tend to know a lot about their CCPs because they stand around all the time talking about THEIR CCPs. So you came to the right place. :wink:
There were, however, hundreds of 170s made and more and more members join each day with one of them. We "rule" this site but unfortunately don't know a thing about CCPs :wink:

Mine originally came with a 185 Evinrude. I have a 200 on mine now. It runs well with this HP. Boat was rated at 230hp, if memory serves. The old rule of thumb was to mount as close to the max as possible. With fuel costs, you may want to re-think that mantra.
My 84 came with a below deck live well. Sealed it up. I now have a small (17gal) well mounted on the transom bracket.
I can't say because I installed my bracket (full transom length) when I first bought the boat. I love mine. It allows more room in the rear of the boat and does not seem (on mine) to negatively affect the dynamics of the boat. I installed it because I used my CCP for diving and fishing, with a lean toward the diving aspect. In that regard, the full transom bracket was the correct choice.

The CCP loves a chop but it ain't no Contender. I have navigated in 4 to 6 and it's not fun. She handles 2 to 3 with the trim tabs but only the driver is enjoying the ride. Anyone on the coffin ain't smilin'. :(
I hear tell the 245's ride mo better.
A friend of mine who had a mint 84 222CCP, later sold it and bought a 26' Hydra- Sport, once compared the ride of his old AS. Said the AS rode like a 65 Chevy with four bad tires.
After all, she's short and light.

Since you've asked... my CCP is a '85 200 with a 200 (Johnson, that is) and to me, I don't want to go any faster on the water. Just over 4300 RPM's is cruising right along and there's still plenty of room left on the tach.
Not much else to say about your soft floor. Some folks have removed the fish boxes forward the console and suffer soft floor. The boxes appear to be designed to sit just about on the stringers and AS did not put any support between the stringers on the 200. Take the fish boxes out and the floor acts like the canvas in a WWE match.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. Your not selling me on the ride! Are they acceptable or what? What makes them classic???? Well its too late anyway. The boat is mine and the layout is beautiful. Gonna start in on her soon. So I guess 200 seems to be the hp zone, now is there a performance benefit to the closed transom/gil bracket setup or is it just a personal thing?

I think you will really enjoy your 222CCP. It's a great all-around boat. Very seaworthy, but can be wet at times - it does not have a big Carolina flare in the front. But you can always add spray rails that knock the wet ride way down. I've had my 22-2CCP out in some pretty snotty stuff, and never had a worry about the boat getting me there and back.
222CCPs run fine with 200s or twin 115s, or anything up to 300 HP. Twin Honda 90 4-strokes apparently do pretty well too, but I have not been on one with that layout. My trusty old 200 Merc Black Max gives 43 MPH at WOT (5300 RPM), with a nice 28 MPH cruise at about 3.1 MPG. This is with a 19 pitch Quicksilver HighFive prop.
A closed transom and bracket will give more aft freeboard and less engine noise, but be careful with weight distribution. I would move the batteries under the console and use a floatation bracket.

You can open the deck plates in the spashwell and under the coffin and see the stringers. There's a lot of big, open space under the forward deck in CCPs. The gas tank takes up the space under the rear area, until you get to the spashwell. The remainder is open back to the livewell (or should I say deadwell, cuz it's basically dead space!).
