Title: Hummingbird Side imaging sonar
Post by: Foxhole on June 15, 2008, 04:57:12 PM: I am thinking about buying a Hummingbird Side imaging sonar. Does anybody have one of these units and use it in salt water? The pics look great on the website. Someone said they were not good in rough water due to the boat movement distorting the side image. I want to use it for trout and rig fishing. I think it will be a awesome tool if it works like they say. It is really no good if it only works in glass smooth water.

Post by: GoneFission on June 15, 2008, 09:49:37 PM: I have seen demos of the side scan and it looks pretty cool, but have not been on a boat with it yet. Humminbird won a bushel of awards with the side scan, and I would probably jump on a 797C2 if I was out to buy a new unit. I have a Matrix 67 (455 wide-side trolling motor mount transducer) on the bow of my boat and a Matrix 97c (20/200 dual beam transom mount) on the console. Very happy with both. :D

The quick-disconnect swivel mounts on Humminbirds also allow you to take your valuable electronics with you very easily. I can also interchange units if the main one fails, so the bow 67 is a backup for the main 97c. Both use the same GPS antenna and quick mount, and both use the same Navionics chart chips.

I heard they dont work well in deep water but, if you dont care about that it looks like a great sonar.

They are not cheap. If you get one I want a full report with screen shots :o

Post by: Foxhole on June 17, 2008, 12:05:21 PM: That is what I was hoping for too a full first hand report. I will gladly give a report if I get one. Right now I am trying to decide weather to use what I have, Re-power, or just sell the old AS 22-2 and get a Diesel boat.
