rebuilding the transom, I've got the OMC trim working, and I'm wondering should I re-install the trim tabs? What are the pros and cons?

IMHO there is no downside to the use of properly sized trim tabs.
With the ever increasing cost of fuel, you need every tool in the box in order to maximize your gph consumption.
Motor trim, fuel meter, tach and trim tabs are the best way to achieve more pleasure (and the lowest cost) from your vessel and don't forget an increase in ride comfort.
Trim tabs...Don't leave the dock without them.

First of all, it depends on the type of hull you have. If you have an old 170 like mine, I would say you don't need them. She responds quite nicely to trim and jumps out of the hole with the vim and vigger she should. Some of our 170 family members have tabs on their boat and love them.
If you have a bigger hull, like anything bigger than the 170, you might consider them especially as you approach the 222 size or if you have something heavy like my 230 Explorer I would say yes, you'll want them. Allows you to level her out when running and jump up on plane quicker.
Let me look, hmmm, you have a '79 222 FF - a cuddy type boat - yup, I agree with Bob, put them on. You'll get better response with them.
