Finally got some time to get a photo thread going. Cannot tell you guys how excited I am. This has been 10 years of waiting and wanting.
There she sits ready to get started. The hull is nearly flawless, no bulges, patches, all lines smooth and true!
She is to be an I/O convert!
Controls were moved way forward by the previous owner. Had to be a crab boat. The "boss" looks on and I have full approval. Would I have ever married a woman who wasn't a boating enthusiast? Heck no!
This is 5 days later. We had to go back over to Bayside Marine and look over the stringers, fuel tank options, deck layout, etc. after the old deck had been ripped out and all hardware removed. Decided to take the Ranger out and harrass some redfish in the morning before heading out. This 20 pounder took me into the groves twice before giving up. God bless Power Pro...
Well, we got there and I took all kinds of detailed pics. Don't know what the heck was up but this photo was the only one that wasn't too dark to view. Hull is ready to begin full restore. All foam and stringers were dry, transom was dry and solid. Got lucky there, a great clean canvas to start with!

More photos next week!
-
that is awesome! I'm excited for you. Keep us updated. And BTW killer red!
-
Nice Red :thumright:
Lots of flexibility in design now that the sole is out.
-
:thumleft:
Going to be a great project!
Going to call her Anticipation?
-
Hey undertow, I would reconsider repowering with an i/o.
TRUST me nothing but a head ache. My two cents: Looking at your photos you are at step one. You are at the stage of your project were you could set her up for an outboard.
We have an 280 omc sterndrive and I swear I would never buy another.
They are nice at first, but when something go's wrong the are extremeley difficult to work on, not to mention expensive. Good luck!
-
175hp Suzuki Outboard was purchased 2 weeks ago. Nothing against I/O's, they're just not for me.
-
I thought you were converting her INTO an i o. It look as thought she had an inboard inher. Good Luck!!! Out boards are the best..
-
Here are some pictures of her before she left NC!!
http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery ... puser=1345 (http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=1345)
Good Luck with her Undertow2!!
-
Looking forward to seeing the job progress.
-
Nice choice of motors..i have the same one hanging off mine
-
newellchunker....when are you going to find me another "project" boat to buy? :D
That McKee 14 I bought from you last year is still running like a champ!
-
thanks for the photos newellchunker...'preciate that.
capt dave, i think you and i got advice from some of the same people around here i am surprised we never met before. i am a yammy guy been one for 20+ years all the way back to my first YZ-80...but, suzuki has proven themselves here lately and paying 1/3 less per hp is something that can't be ignored. the deal i got on that 175 was almost surreal. my Ranger packs a yammy.
going to see Will and my '74 tomorrow, been over a week a lot more has been done. meeting with the dude from paramount to discuss options while there for the tower. its a lot to consider.
post more pics tomorrow.

Here are photos from this past Thursday's visit to Will's shop. Can barely contain myself anymore...
Transom is nearly finished with the new Coosa board:
View from the outside of the transom:
Inside hull is cleaned up, stringers re-glassed:
This is a shot taken from the starboard stern side looking towards midships. Mild alterations to accomodate the pumps, etc. from the I/O design. Will actually work to our advantage:
Shot looking at the bow:
Well, that's all I have time to post today. I only had a few more shots from this visit I will add later.
PLEASE post any comments or feedback on what you see. As I told you guys when I joined here I know just about enough to be dangerous....
Stevo

Undertow... I am very jealous, I don't mean to be rude, but what was your budget for this project? Not including the outboard.
I am wanting to do the same thing to my Osprey 200, so I am very interested in a what a project like this would cost.
Keith
-
Well, guys and girls I was down in Palmetto today to visit the girl and she's coming along nicely. Forgot the "F-ing" camera.... DUH, DER!!
I will be back down there next week to get some photos. Starting to see real progress. Transom is done, and they are putting the finishing touches on the top cap. Looks real nice, lines are smooth and true. Deck is done 4' from the transom, using the $$ Coosa for that. Came to an agreement with Will about swapping the swim platforms for trim tabs. What a relief. Will is, at this point, living up to his word. I have no doubt that the remainder of the job will be pleasant now. I don't always do so, but I honestly feel like I made the best choice going with Bayside Marine Services.
Decided today (99.9% sure) to go with the T-Top tower dual station set-up. This is the tower design whereas you are basically standing 1-3" above the console and the upper station just barely is jutting out above the canvas on the T-Top. It's cheaper, VERY sharp, doesn't screw with the center of gravity quite so much, nothing to fold down, and I will only need the metal building I am putting in the backyard for it to have a 12' door as opposed to 14'+ that adds HUGELY to the cost. Plus, I don't want another "Tampa Tower Boat." I will be able to spot fish just fine from this vantage point.
-
Undertow2 - would love to see more pics of the project. Can you give a ballpark cost of what something like this costs?
-
Undertow...she's looking good, I'm gonna try and stop by Will's shop to look at her face to face. He's is gonna redo my rubrail and bottom i think in the next couple of months.
-
Tyler915 - Count on $40K maybe to begin from scratch. REALLY depends on what you want.
captdave - thanks, the most recent pix aren't up yet, she has come a long way. I will get those posted tonite when I get home. I was down @ Will's Wednesday and got photos.
-
Sorry for the delay guys, here are the photos from last week. Basically, she is in that stage where things are coming together quickly. I will be going back down tomorrow, will get more pix.
This shot shows the finishing stage of the bow cast deck, the top cap has been completely re-glassed, faired and shot. Gettin' close!!
This shot shows the new 65 gallon tank! Exact placement was discussed, of course we have gone forward with it. Access will be exacting and easy for both ends. Don't know why, but the sight of the tank got me all fired up...
This one shows the hull almost prepped out for gel and paint. All ablative is off at this point and imperfections are being worked and faired out. Starting to take on the look of a restored AS!! I think I am getting blue balls at this point!!
Shot of the transom. All faired out and ready for finish work. I have decided on Bennett tabs, in no small way from the recent thread whereas you guys raved about their support structure. I have Lencos on the Ranger and they work fine, but...
That's it til this weekend. Photos should get more and more impressive as we move into December. Still looking at pre-Xmas delivery.
Think I found my GPS/Sonar combo @ Boater's World, will post if I get it.
Hope you all had a great Turkey day and ate your weight in turkey.
-
Wow, Undertow2, that is definitely going to be the COOLEST 22-2 EVER!!!
I vote Undertow2's AS the absolute best boat ever built in the history of all boats. It is the single most important boat of all time!!!!
8) :D :thumleft: :thumright:
(I do at least realize that I need professional help.)
-
She will be done before you know it. i didnt get a chance to make it over there last weekend but hopefully soon, i need to get my boat in to get the bottom done.
-
8)
Looking good man.
-
Boy, you Florida boaters have it made. Great pics Undertow. I'm hoping to get my 170 out on Sunday but they are calling for ice and snow. I'm more worried about getting the boat home from the water than the boat on the water. I saw on the local news tonight that a 22' boat capsized four miles off NJ and two of the three onboard were rescued. One of the survivors said they started taking on water and had no functional bilge pump.

Looking closer to an Aquasport on each trip.

Wow, the pics looks almost as good as the real thing Undertow. I got to check out your baby last week when I picked up my Porta-Bracket from Bayside. I got a say though, my 22-2 baby looking pretty good too. We'll have to have a boat parade when they're done!
-
Yea, Mike you and I are kinda "grouped" with completions. We will definitely have to parade them both all over the Bay one day when they're done.
Are you gonna update your thread soon?
-
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
2004 Performance Aluminum tandem axle, adjustable bunks, disc brakes, 2 spares, LED's, fore and aft guides, even got the receiver with the new hitch from the guy. The tires are the original with NO wear. This guy brought his boat home to his slip. Probably no more than 50 miles on it.
Now, I have been looking for 3 months and was having a hell of a time getting out for less than $2000 used...
$1100.....
Feast your eyes on one of the best deals I have EVER made:
Bringing the motor, rigging and controls down to Bayside Marine tomorrow. Life is good right now. Pix this weekend.
-
What kind of gun did you use to rob that guy  You found a steal for sure nice job being patient.
-
I'l give you $1200 right now. lol
-
Damn, that IS a good deal.
-
The prep work is 90+ % done. Just about time to paint, rig, power and get the girl on the water. The plan is to have her out for maiden run January 9th. I'll beat the crap out of her that day to see if anything needs tidying up, cuz I start my 9 day vacation January 12th and plan to be on the boat at least 7 days weather permitting. Anyone want some grouper filets???
These photos are of the boat still in the grinding/fairing stages, not too exciting but we're almost there
Shot of the tranny, ready for the Porta and some paint!!
This shot shows the quality of the fairing work. That cap is as smooth as silk, incredible considering the condition it was in 4 months ago.
This one shows the starboard side of the tranny and deck, damn near ready to be shot. The rear center box holds the pumps for the Porta and the Bennetts and provides maximum room for fishing off the stern both sides.
One from the bow, all ready to be shot.
Another one of the deck and cap, sanded and nearly ready for paint.
That's it for now. The next set of photos will have PAINT!! I chose "Bahia Honda" green for the hull and a light cream color for the interior. Pretty much the same interior color as Mike.
High hopes that you all are getting ready to enjoy a great holiday season. Wish you all the best!!
-
You have a paint sample to share? I have been leaning toward green and looking for a good hue... I already have mine in mind... but do not have a name.
-
She's looking good I stopped by and saw her on tuesday. Will is gonna be doing some bottom work on my boat and paint, hopefully right after the first of the year. I love your front deck!!
-
Looking good man - between you and Mike, we'll have 2 more floating at the next get-together 8)
Maybe someone from the South too, not mentioning any names...doc
Happy ho-ho.
-
Rich-
Go here, crappy scan I did for that particular thread but you can see the hue.
http://www.classicaquasport.com/forum/v ... sc&start=0 (http://www.classicaquasport.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2596&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)
It's called "Bahia Honda" green and was conceived with the thought of Bay Area water color. I would really like baby blue, but there's a few out there already and I just gotta be me. SWEET color for an AS 22-2 though....perfect compliment IMHO. But, I really like this green too.
-
Update!!
Just got off the phone with Will, they are double-timing it to get to the finish line. I wish I could be there for a little while every day now until next Wednesday but I gotta work and Will is closed down for visitors. I was glad to hear that because Will is totally cordial and visitors get his full attention and time. They will certainly need a full court press to get my 22-2 done by next Wednesday. I think they'll be emailing me some photos I will post those as quickly as I can.
So, again, the plan is that she's done next Wednesday and we do a maiden run/troublefinder excursion. Back to the shop the 10th and the 11th for touch-up and then I am on vacation the 12-20th. I got my best buddy coming in town from New Orleans to help me properly break her in that week, etc. etc. VERY excited at this point....
Merry New Year to all, see you on the water soon.
-
Obviously, you will have to provide many, many pictures of the sea trial! :D
-
Will called today, am going down tomorrow to see her. Very excited, he says the color choice came out well.
Many photos tomorrow night..on the water Saturday will post loads of pix over the weekend.
-
I hate you.
-
I can't wait to see her. It's been really nice weather lately too. Every morning when I run over the Howard Franklin to work and see a flat bay, I get more excited.
Mine is still coming along, slowly, which is ok, I'm patient and have no deadlines …..yet.
-
Well, whatever has been going around got me Tuesday night late and I woke up yesterday so sick I couldn't move. Will called and we decided that he will take her out today for any troubleshooting and then I pick her up Saturday and away we go.
This is how my luck goes, ALWAYS...but, on the bright side, Saturday I get her and am on vacation for 9 days with the boat.
Ludicrous amount of pix to come..
-
she's looking good, I've seen her a couple times this week. She will definitly be a head turner for sure.
-
Well .........
Did you get her?
How does she run?
Where's the pics?
:thumleft: :thumright:
-
Sorry dudes been a crazy, busy week. The weather really has not permitted me to take her out yet, proper like. Tried Sunday @ Anclote totally fogged up.
Also some ISP broadband issues, they are now fixed.
Got her Saturday, still sick, feelin' like total crap, however still very utterly stoked.
Rolled around the corner to Will's shop and saw this for the first time:
This shot sums it all up for me. She's a beaut!:
So far I know: 1. She will top out at 43-45 with me in the boat totally trimmed out WOT. 2. With tabs fully down she's on plane at 9 mph if so desired. 3. She cuts thru chop like nobody's business. 4. No fuel consumption #'s yet, but, it looks real good so far..:
Her Resurrector and me, pulling in from a very short, cold maiden run. I have a 99.8 fever....:
Celebratory crawfish boil last night, good times, waiting for better weather:
I might wait until after her follow-up visit to do a full photo blast. We got behind the 8-ball a little to make the deadline and she needs still a bit of fit and finish follow-up and some ends tidying up. Will has asked to have her back in the shop after I enjoy her this week.
Still hasn't settled in yet. Very proud to own this boat. My covered parking spot sold out from underneath me, scrambling to find a spot until the portable garage gets delivered.
More soon. Mike, can't wait to see your final outcome...
-
She's a beaut Steve :!: :!:
Can't wait to see it tied up next to mine at the next get-together. Don't forget your fenders (you might want to bring some bumpers too )
-
DAMN YOU. That's the exact color I wanted for my boat! 8)
Looks great. Guess I have to pick a new color now. Need some interior shots please!
-
Rick - Yes, already got fenders, can't wait to bring her to the next party.
LilRich - Interior shots definitely coming after touch-up work is done, also need some SUN....where is that thing?? I'm getting Cabin Fever bad!!
-
Undertow2,
Man she is a beauty, if I'd have known that she woulda turned out that pretty.....she might not have ever left me  . I'm happy for ya! Tell Will that he did an amazing job on her!
Thanks,
newellchunker
-
Great looking boat! I'm jealous.
I'm also jealous of the crawfish. Were they live, and if so, how much and where?
-
She looks awesome!! Let me know if you want to try out a 4 blade prop instead of 3 blade, we could swap for a week or so. You have a tower going in too, dont you?
-
scott - you're in Palm Harbor with me you shoulda just come over for the boil. Next time... Yes, live, I get them from Sal's Riverside in New Orleans, they fly up on Southwest - 40 pounds with shipping and boil spice about $150. I fed 10 people and still got leftover.
captdave - lets look into that prop swap. saw your boat the other day, very nice. probably a t-tower by summer time.
-
UT2,
It really came out nice. You should be very proud.
The color is great but I have a general question.
Is it (the color) like anything that the factory (tone wise) offered that model year?
-

Well, you shoulda invited me 8)
But if you did, then you might not have any crawfish leftover.
-
Looks really nice Steve, I know you have to be really proud. Looks like Will really did a number on her. Congrats1!!!
-
I would have put a clean T-shirt on if I had known I would appear in a pic on forum
I know Steve is going to post a few more pics in coming weeks, but here is a pic of the interior that we took on sea trial
(http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/data/501/1553AS_222_-_Bagilo_interior_full.jpg)
We have also posted some pics in our gallery to give you the rigging pics that Steve did not get (it certainly was all hands to the deck!)
http://www.baysidemarineservices.com/gallery.asp (http://www.baysidemarineservices.com/gallery.asp)
newellchunker - she certainly was a good find, give us a shout if you have any more 74's in your neck of the woods, could do with a road trip! Cheers Will
-
nice work Will, as always!!
-
 WOW
What a beautiful craft she is :!:
Great job gentlemen :!:
-
Ok, now I’m really jealous! That is one beautiful Aquasport! Will and the gang at Bayside did a GREAT job!
Are you planning on a T-Top or tower?
-
Beautiful job all around, the color really makes a statement. Now enjoy her!!
-
Hard to believe this was what she looked like before -
(http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/data/500/134574as222_006.jpg)
What a transformation. You gonna put the railing back on?
-
Right on, Rick, thanks for the kind words.
Rick, no, not putting the rail back. My wife would like that, I just don't like the aesthetics or fishability. The OEM factor is appetizing, though.
-
Undertow, do you know what kind of paint they use at bayside? Awesome looking boat by the way.
-
Here is a picture from our gallery - a '84 222 - another beaut:
-
Paint is from Fiberglass Services, believe they are out of Sarasota. Check with Bayside to be sure. That color is a custom color from a major manufacturer, I had to get permisssion to use it.
-
WOW,,,,,,,,,the original designer should see that
Is that a stainless steel homemade trailer under '777'? Where is that work of art?
-
Is that a stainless steel homemade trailer under '777'? Where is that work of art?
Homemade? Yes. Stainless? No Way!
That's that old silver/aluminum rustoleum. I applied gallons of that stuff for my dad when I was a kid. We were too poor to afford to have a trailer galvanized. Child labor was cheap and the paint was available.
Humm, might explain my ADD.
My dad used to build those old style tilting pipe trailers in the 60's & 70's. His were popular because he built them old drill stem pipe and mounted spindles and hubs that matched the tow vehicle.
-
Mad Dog,
You better check again :P .....that was all Stainless Steel (except the spindles, winch, bunks, rims and ball hitch). I was the owner and tried selling it for $300.00. Nobody wanted it so I stripped it down and sold it for scrap @ $1.50LB.....$724.00 later I was happy it was SS!
-
High 78...winds 5-10...Sunny...
Guess who's finally going to enjoy their AS today!!!
Hope you guys in the Tampa area can get out today, too.
-
I wish I could get out. Some kind of bug slapped me down Monday night. I got a shot in the butt and two prescriptions Tuesday and just now am starting to feel better.
Hope you had a good day on the water.
-
Wow! That is a boat to be proud of!
-
I started the 230 yesterday - closest I got to using it. Took the 170 out last weekend - tore the trout up - too bad they're out of season now
What are you doing for a trailer UT2? Looked like the one in the pix was a shop trailer.
-
Rick, if memory serves I think I put up a photo of my trailer on this thread. It's working out great.
I still have to get a final photo spread up here. I have all the photos just want to sort it all proper first.
Dunno about you guys but this is working out to be a hectic beginning of the year.
-
Yeah, I don't need to see that damned trailer again - especially for the price you paid.
I paid $1,400 for mine and I knew it needed a brake job!
-
Did closing the transom adding porta-bracket change the draft much?
I'm thinking of doing mine but I'm afraid of the extra weight.
-
Who's fuel tank did you use? Dimensions and capacity?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm in the middle of mine and looking for some advice.
-
fm69912 -
1. The Porta surely adjusted the draft at the stern. I can tell you that as the boat sits I can run her in 12" - 13" with the Porta full up and trimmed a little. Trim tabs also help. Very good for a 22ft boat. So, go for it, the Porta will increase your versatility.
2. Tank is 65 gallon, don't have dimension specs, sorry.
Everyone else - sorry for the delay on the final photo spread. The weather has sucked and she is back to the shop for a 3rd set of hiccups, all mostly cosmetic stuff. Hopefully we get it all tied up on this visit.
I am knee deep in pre-study for SeaSchool. Pretty soon it'll be CAPTAIN Undertow2 to you!!!
-
To be or not to be ..... a Captain, that is the question!
Howdy dude. How's she been running? What kind of gas mileage you getting? Gotten any fishing in yet?
My first sea trail should be this comming weekend! I'm very excited. :D
-
My first sea trail should be this comming weekend! I'm very excited. :D
Pictures. Pictures!
-
Mike -
That's awesome. I start SeaSchool Saturday at 9:00am. I agree with Rich, please post photos.
-
What they said - BTW - still waiting on pics from Steve too.
-
Awesome boat. NOW....POST THE PICS!!!! HaHa!
-
Update -
SeaSchool going good, not worried about it anymore, now just a matter of getting paperwork together.
Bayside still has my boat will probably call tomorrow to get an update. It's been 3 weeks and I am ready to get out. The day I get her back I plan to get some (finally) detailed photos.
-
Cross your fingers for me guys...she is "supposedly" ready for pickup from this 3rd return trip tomorrow morning. It almost feels like picking her up for the first time again, which I guess is cool.
-
Sooooo......?
-
We need an update!
-
Well, she is at a buddy's house right now for some body/paint repair and improvement and overspray removal on the Porta. I am at that point in the game whereas it is seeming like a treadmill to get this boat finally finished, so I am frustrated and will refrain from comment at this time.
-
it looks like you found molds for an anchor locker and a hatch box of some sort, did you make or buy these?
-
sonny - i bought them
-
Took her out yesterday for a maiden offshore run. We went 30 miles out of John's Pass. We hit the Betty Rose and some other spots out further looking for some King action and wanted to refit the freezer with some grouper. All wishes were granted. 2 Kings, 4 BIG gags, and I even caught a 10 pound mangrove snapper. Bait was wadded up everywhere 2 miles offshore. For the doubters:

The 22-2 performed well. Seas were 1-2 in the morning I was able to keep about 30-34 mph quite easily with the hull doing what it was designed to do, with the aid of trim tabs. Seas got to a strong 2-3 on the way back still managed 24 mph with some spray in the face here and there. You gotta love that ride. Like butta. Not quite sure yet but am pretty sure I am getting well over 5 mpg. Very satisfied with that.
Photos coming, I swear.

Surely you all have been curious as to why I haven't finished posting final
pictures, the answer is that more pressing matters have prevailed. We found
out unexpectedly that we're pregnant!! Will over at Bayside was gracious
enough to find a buyer for us until a later time when we can do it all over
again. She's a beaut and will remain local at home in South Tampa with
another classic AS enthusiast.
