Title: Blackfin skeg replacement
Post by: John Jones on May 22, 2007, 09:36:52 PM
Not an Aquasport story but it could apply to any motor.
The skeg on the C60 Yamaha on my flats boat was broken when I got it.

I procrastinated about getting it fixed until I got into some oysters and dinged the leading edge of the prop.  Thank goodness I was only idling.  I did not want to mess with welding so I researched the existing add-ons with nothing jumping out at me.  I decided to go with the Blackfin just because it was easy.

Step by step:

Sand, clean, then tape off the gearcase.

Tape off the skeg to keep the sealant squeeze out off.

Knowing how messy I am, I also taped some paper around the skeg.  Here it's in a wooden jawed vise to hold it while you fill it with the adhesive.

It took the entire tube to fill the skeg to 1/2" from the top.  Instructions said to use duct tape to hold it in place on the motor.  I was not happy with that because it kept sliding a little no matter how tight I pulled the tape.  I had some giant re-usable zip ties so I used them and a block of wood to hold in place for the cure.

One place in the instructions says 24 hour cure.  Another says 72 hours so I left it the 72.

I fished the boat several days.  I definitely have more steering torque.  The boat seems to turn sharper but that is hard to judge because every time I used it the water was very choppy and I had total of 3 people in the boat and it doesn't perform so well when it's loaded that much.

I guess the next time I misjudge the depth of a flat we will see how rugged it is.

Oh, cost with shipping was something like $86.

That's interesting. I have a neighbor that could use that.

Another route...

Put one of these on the Merc on my 170.  Skeg wasn't broken, just wanted more protection down there.
