Title: 90hp E-Tec on a 170?
Post by: Asport-Rog on April 15, 2007, 09:01:46 AM
Hi,

I found this site after deciding to repower my 77' 170. My dad was the original owner our 170 and it was passed down to me in 94'. The boat had an 85hp Johnson on it that has been less than reliable the past few years.

I was wondering if anyone has the 90hp E-Tec on this hull? The old 85 would   push it around 38-39 mph on gps. I would like to keep the same top-end but  am concerned that the 3-cylinder won't have enough torque to get her on plane quickly with several passengers.

If I go to the 115hp V4 I am concerned about the weight.

Roger

Go for it, my 75ho merc was great on my osprey. If I still had it and was to repower, the 90 etec would be my first choice. Enough power to do all the watersports you want but light enough to not affect the transom.

I pulled the trigger on the 90 E-Tec and I'm picking it up tomorrow. I'll post some before and after pictures of the install.

I got to work on her this weekend!

I had the transom looked over by a local boat/fiberglass guy. He filled the numerous holes and such so I needed to re-drill. Here's a template I made to help mark the new holes.

I used a drill guide to get the holes drilled square.

I used a hoist suspended from the garage rafters.

Here she is bolted to the transom

Now to finish up the electrical, systems check tach, tilt gauge, etc... more pictures to come.

They're supposed to be nice motors though.
Nice progress :!:  :!:

If you put each of those photobucket lines between this code: (http://...your%20photobucket%20path...), the pictures will appear in your posts.

Thanks RickK for the image tip.

I got her out this past weekend with the family. I'm really happy with the 90hp on this hull. It was very responsive and got on plane almost instantaneously.

We had 4 on board with a full tank of gas (27gal) and she topped out on the GPS at 36 mph. I’ll need to work on prop selection next. With a 17” aluminum prop, WOT rpm was 4500. It’s usually only me an my son for the most part so I want to see what WOT RPM is with just the 2 of us and play around with trim.

That 90 really pushes her along.  What is that black handle on the Port side for?

Nice job A-R!!!  The dealer you got the engine from might loan you a couple of props to try.

Rick- The handle is the hood latch, it wasn't closed in any of the pictures.

I have a 19" SST prop that I'll give it a shot when it's just me onboard but I have a feeling it will be overpropped. Good idea about asking the dealer, I'll do that Jim, Thanks!
