Title: Gas Tank Location on 1972 170?

Hey all! Slowly removing the previous owners deck 'repair' on my 1972 170. I have almost all the floor out to expose the stringers (which look to me in good shape), but before I replace the deck, I want to see about getting a gas tank below deck. I'm noticing that there is not an existing one, and there is only about an 8" x 8" x however long space between each of the stringers running along the length of the boat. Did the originals from this year have an above deck tank somewhere? I don't see how they could fit one below deck unless there were multiple very narrow tanks...?

You might have a left over '71 hull and the fuel tank was located inside the console. A 27gal aluminum tank.
