Title: 1986 170 Osprey Repower/Refurbish/Refit/Restore
Post by: WasDadsNowMine on May 16, 2022, 11:23:36 PM
Well boys, its time I stop lurking and actually start being active on this forum. I'll admit that I may be the WORST Osprey owner here, and have zero practical experience with fiberglass or with any in-depth project, but now the fire burns inside me to pull up my big-boy pants and get my a$$ out on the water again.

I guess I'm posting here to see what you all recommend I tackle first. Other than being dirty, shes got a small soft spot on the deck by the bilge access and the rigging gutter cap seems to not be as secure as it was in the 80's. Also a bunch of other things but mostly cosmetic. Any chronic problems I might need to address?

And where the heck do I find a new windscreen?!?!?!?!

My suggestion is to use a pressure washer and get her all cleaned up.
Post some pics of her so we can see what you see.  Use the instruction in this link to post pics https://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0

Like Rickk mentioned, defiantly post some pictures. I also second a through powerwashing. When i picked up my 170 it was sitting in a yard for the better part of 10yrs and was absolutely filthy. I rented a high power gas washer from home depot, as my junky electric one didnt have the oomph needed for the job. I was pretty amazed at well she cleaned up with just water, no cleaners or chemicals

Oh snap! OEM and everything! Thats Fantastic!

I just brought the boat home from a friends storage yard and she definitely needs some work. Trailer is pretty shot, so that's trailer #5 i think. Huge wear areas along the keel and my poor old transom live wells are lookin REALLY rough. Current work schedule doesn't give me the time I need for the boat, hoping for a change shortly. For now here's an old picture just to wet your taste buds.

Also! The marina I'm working at has a gentleman whose 90hp suzuki just lost its whole lower unit. If i can get a good price, does anyone have any gripes about a 90 4s on a 170? It shaves off another 10-15 lbs off the transom.

Hopefully this link works. I'm still learning the site and it's tools.

The weight of a 4S 90 should be heavier than that 115 2S (which weighs the same as a 90 2S)

I agree that the 4s SHOULD weigh more, but the advertised prices for a 1998 v4 115 2s is 356lbs for a standard shaft, while the 2010 Suzuki DFA 90 L (standard shaft) is listed as 341. Even with the oil added it brings the total weight short of the v4 115.

The problem is I'm still a speed demon and really want to keep hitting that 40mph+ and I'm worried that the 90 wont have the beans to get me there like the 115 does. I haven't really dug deep on the forum yet but does any other 170 owner have a 90 4s Suki and what are your numbers looking like? My whole resto project is balanced on whether I buy this motor or not.

ALSO, I've noticed that the transom livewells seem to be rare on other 170s and even a bit taboo for my area of Central Florida. Does anybody know why?

Quick update:

Got home the other day from work, all tires are flat. Propeller is missing. Console is not attached to deck and the batteries are missing. Fuel lines are cut and I assume the tank is empty (not super hurt about that, gas was probably 5 years old). Swim ladder is missing as well as some garden equipment, a small chainsaw, and a bed frame from my garage. Cameras on the front door only recorded a USPS van early morning, and Police say that they can try to keep an eye open for the stuff but its pretty much long gone. No insurance on the trailer, and the boat parts are less than half of my deductible.

I hate palm bay.

Whoa, that sucks. Hard to believe that the thieves would even remove the console...let alone the rest of the items listed. I feel for you man.  :41: :03:
