Title: Replacing shift and throttle cables 170/Yamaha 704
Post by: alandry100 on February 12, 2019, 08:29:33 PM
Noticed at the end of the season that the control cables are cracking so time to replace.
I have a 2005 Yamaha 2 stroke with 704 controls. Wondering what cables to get? Are all Yamaha cables the same (other than length)? I have been looking but the parts diagram for the engine that I have - does not specify part number for the cable?
Any insight would be appreciated.

You may find the numbers you seek on the ends of the cables attached at the 704 control end.  :ScrChin:

You are wise Seabob. They are morse cables D32377-003-156.1 It looks like they are no longer available - the Teleflex replacement appears to be TEL-CCX633-13. Should I go with that or the Yamaha? - Which I don't know - part number is not included in the parts diagram. Must be on the controls diagram.

I spoke with my Yamaha dealer here in Tally and he recommended the Teleflex cable over the Yamaha. I just quickly glanced at the Teleflex site and it appears you have the correct part number for the replacements. That old Morse # equates to a 13' length so...

If you want a warmer, fuzzier feel, you could try speaking with Teleflex tech department. They have been helpful in the past and could confirm you have the correct parts.

Good luck. :thumright:

Ok - got the cables - started the install - so far so good the rigging channel on the 170 makes this kind of work not too bad.
Two things - any clues on how to make sure they are close to adjusted on first try? I have counted the number of turns for each of the nuts.

Also - since I have it off I want to replace the aging plywood housing and will need to remove the tilt trim wiring - the first one seems easy.

The second one seems a little more difficult.

Any thoughts on its removal?

All done - let's hope it works alright. Looks right - when shifted into forward or reverse, throttle does not move. Only after in gear does that engage.
