Hello everyone, well let me start by saying i have restored a couple 222 flatbacks and a 24 proline flatback. But on this build im going a completly different route and was told by many that this is the site for tips n tricks by very knowledgeable people. So a couple years ago i was in texas and meet some guys who where taking the aquasports and prolines and cutting them down to make scooter style boats and i must say i liked them very well, so a couple weeks ago i found a 20ft proline flatback for cheap and well i grabbed it just for this build. The problem is i cant get in touch with those guys and i dont know what height i should cut it down to? By memory i want to say it was like 9 or 10 inches from chine? It has been a few years since i had my last 222 and i cant remember how deep the chine was underwater with a 200vmax, any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope to have this build completed in the next few months i will post pictures of the build as it progresses.
-
Guess i should have added this will be a complete composite build , foam flotation, 8" wide box stringers and bulkheads and polyester resin as its not in the budget for epoxy.
-
Should Be an awesome build! I'm looking forward to seeing your modifications. Unfortunately, I can't help you with the waterline, but someone will chime in soon. I think one of the 196 rebuilds showed a conversion to a flat's skiff.
-
This is the style of boat im shooting for.
-
Here is what i was thinking, cut down to 13" following the chine lines of the boat with a rolled gunnel. A deck height of 12" leaving a 1" gunnel all the way around with notches at transom for any splash. No deck hatches other then bildge access which will be raised to the conture of transom. All storage ,baitwell, batteries, tackle boxes will all be in the raised console. Under floor fuel tank will be slightly forward, and baitwell will be in front of raised console to level the boat a little more.
-
Instead of a rolled edge, why not some kind of shear clamp. Since you’re going composite, use Coosa or foam 1x2 and wrap the glass from your deck down onto it. Stronger than a rolled edge, and you won’t need a mold to roll the edge.
-
Sign me up for watching this build.
I grabbed a couple photos off the web on these type of boats and it certainly doesn't look like there is much hull in the water - I think your estimate of 13' may be about right

It appears most of these type boats don't have much engine on them, so you might actually fly with a 200WMax on it :afraid:
I think a shoe box joint might be the easiest and strongest for the deck to hull. At the speeds you're going to seeing, I thing the strongest way is the way to go.
-
Well talked to a buddy and he messured his water line for me, he has a 300 verado, twin power poles, porta bracket, hyro trim tabs, closed transom and baitwell in rear and has a waterline of 9"-10" i wont have that much weight hanging off the back so im going 13" :scrHead: .... if i went with that edge which i do like the idea as it would be much stronger what about a wire chase? i have four lights for each side that i was going to hide under the rolled edge similar to these but in green.
-
Well no turning back now.... cut to 13" , hull looks completely different.

Sure does. You can see in the top pic how the prow is lower than the rest of the hull, maybe 6"(?) - see how it drops down in the hull? So that in mind, do you really want to follow the chine? From the side I'm sure you still have the classic proline sheer (I can see it in the 2nd pic)
-
Yes i did notice that when i cut it down, i just dont feel comfortable redesigning that angle. Any i deas RickK on how to measure it out? Thought about it last night maybe measuring up from the old floor to edge in the rear and following that measurement all the way around.... maybe i mark it out and see what it looks like.
-
I think the boat is going to sit on her lines regardless of what you do - meaning the part that droops below the waterline still will. Does that affect your "skinny" water ideas for her? Maybe. This hull is pretty much a FB model so it won't jump up on plane - they just go faster through the water with the prow cutting the water in front.
If you want the top sheer to be horizontal to the water you might want to carefully float her as is and walk around in the water and mark the waterline and even measure the same height from the water for the sheer? Just thinking aloud here.
It is definitely going to be a different looking boat but that's what you wanted. Does it look bad right now - no but I think you had a lower boat in mind.
Maybe Chris can jump in here too and offer some ideas.
-
Check out Mowdy boats and El Pescador boats. They are both cut down flat backs, or started out that way anyway. Gunnel Height around 15" would be standard. You can see these boats have a 20" transom . The transom is about 5" proud of the gunnels.
-
I’m the worst at remembering to take pictures and keep up on post. But I am still working on the project a few hours every weekend I didn’t take pictures of the stringers but they are composite along with the floor only wood is transom and raised deck.
-
All the flooring was done with 2 layers of 1708 on bottom , 4 layers of 1708 along with 2 layer of 1 1/2oz chopped strand mat on top.
-
Here is the raised deck going in.
-
After getting all the plumbing done for the 77 gallon baitwell i closed up the top finshed glassing it in and started gel-coat.
-
Completed the gel coat on deck
-
Yesterday did the webbing what a pain never done it before,Todays work completed was the side gel coat man the lovebugs are driving me mad.
-
Big changes! Looks good. If you upload the pics to your gallery it will allow bigger pics to be uploaded, in fact it doesn't care how big, unlike when you attach them.
Follow the instructions here http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0 - don't attach them, this is better for viewing.
Spend a few minutes to absorb the instructions. It's really easy.
-
Thanks will keep that in mind on the pics was wondering why I was having to resize by so much.

I just didn’t like the sea foam green gel coat so sanded it down and reshot black gel coat.
-
What engine did you decide on?
-
Really havent made my mind up yet, friend of mine just repowered his aquasport with a susuki 150 and it runs really nice.
-
Boat looks cool and perfect for skinny water. Are you going with a jack plate or a Porta-bracket?
With the 140 Zuke, you’d save 100 lbs, draw less, and I bet she’d still fly.
-
Yeah I have the atlas 10” jackplate, power pole brackets, and dual 8’ power poles. Trying to make up my mind on trolling motor, electronics and engine.
-
Anybody know anything about the haswing cayman trolling motors? Seen a couple good reviews on YouTube.
-
What’s total length now that cut it down
-
Length is still 20’ side walls cut down to 13”

Looks great, I like the graphics. What motor did you end up with? Sounds like it won't be long now to splash her.
-
Got a great deal on a 05 115hp mercury optimax for now, as soon as they allow the tag office to open i will get the paperwork done and get her in the water. Pretty much worked every Monday on this one for almost two years.
-
I think the 115 Opti will give you the performance you're looking for - where you'll be using this boat, you don't need to be a speed freak. (Maybe you do? )
-
Your project looks great I love it. I have a 1978 proline 24' flatback that I want to do the same way. I love the raised platform and everything about the work you have performed on it. Looks great. I currently running a 1997 Gulf Coast 200 classic with a Evinrude 150 but would rather run the Proline
-
So i was able to get an appointment at tag office, she is all legal. Took her out this weekend and had a blast, i do have a few bugs to work out but all in all i love it. We took her to about three feet of water and tried to sink her with no luck :8): swamped her from the rear, nosed dived her in to waves 5 big guys trying to lean her as hard as we could, 5 gallon buckets of water would flow out as fast as we could pour. Im going to say she is safe for everything we will throw at her on a fishing trip, plenty of room for four to fish comfortably. It has been a long journey to get the water.

This is fully loaded, full tank of fuel 35 gallons, 50 gallon baitwell full, yeti 65 full of ice and drinks, 4 batteries, tackle and rods.
-
Somethings did get changed, as i sold the twin powerpoles as i just didnt want the pumps and weight and went with the single minnkota talon. Sold the bobs for atlas for same reason just didnt want all the pumps. I will have to upgrade the baitwell pump as the one i have is just to small turn over rate is slow. I will take it in for carb cleaning and adjustment. Need to dial in a prop. Still need to install gps/fishfinder, nema network, spot lights and cushions for tower and yeti.
-
Sure looks nice. Congrats.
-
Thank you

Anybody have prop recomendations, the prop on the engine now pushes wot and pretty slow i have looked over the entire prop and there is no numbers or name. Mercury prop selection says 4 blade 13x19 pitch.
-
If you post RPM at WOT you’ll get better answers.
-
Richiebe - sometimes if the prop specs will be on labeled on the hub (if a fixed hub). You can see this if you take of the locking nut on the prop shaft.
-
Unknow on full wot as it would run all the way up to 5000 and it wouldnt be complete wot and i would pull it back down to 3500, took prop off clean it up and looked over every inch of the prop there isnt one mark any where. It is a one piece prop i did check to see if it was bad prop hub put a paint mark on prop and hub took it for quick spin when i rechecked it the marks where about a 1/2" off so i bought a 4 blade 13x19 prop today will check it out this weekend.

Why only 5000 RPM? I think that max RPM on the 115 Optimax is 5700. Lightly loaded, your engine should be turning close to max.
-
I have a 115 but was in a similar scenario. Top end of the RPM range on the 115 was 6000, but with the original prop I was only seeing 5100 WOT.
I sent a note to Ken Reeves at PropGods who recommended a prop which got me up to 6000, increased my top end speed and helps with mid-range cruise.
I'd highly recommend contacting him if you are looking for a prop recommendation (kr@propgods.com)

So did I see this this guy for sale on marketplace or craigslist recently?... just wondering
-
I have a skiff that I want to cut down like this and put a flat top deck on but im not sure how to roll the gunwale edge like this. Do you use a guide like a piece of PVC pipe?
-
In this pic it looks like that may have been what he used. Look at rear corner.
