Title: Risers welded onto bottom of fuel tank?
Post by: Uncutproducts on May 02, 2017, 05:36:13 PM
Need to get a new tank made for my 170. Perusing other peoples builds it seems like they usually bond something to keep it off the bottom of coffin for airflow. Would it be worth having fabricator add some sort of 1/4" riser block to bottom and hold down mounts on top or side?

Usually you glue some starboard strips on the bottom but your idea on the top or side makes sense.

Odds are unless it it done just right your more likely to introduce stress points on the tank where cracking can start, creating another problem.  There are huge amounts of vibrations in a boat.  The tank needs to be able to float around a bit.  There is no PERFECT tank install, just ones where you can hope to avoid induced problems.

I'm currently replacing the tank in my '76 170.  Your question and many others you'll eventually have are included in this thread.  You can follow along with my progress here:
