Title: topside gas tank
Post by: dougals toy on September 14, 2015, 06:31:15 PM
Hey guys,
I have been trodden along on my 196 rebuild. I was in a quandry for a long time about the coffin/ fuel tank issue. The way the coffin was removed by previous owner, it was hard to imagine structural integrity for the deck without a lot of reframing around the stringers.  Deck is in place with gel coat, looks and feels good.

That being said am going topside with the gas tank. THis is sounding really stupid while I am typing...but here goes..toying with the idea of a tank inside of a deck box used as a leaning post/seat...there I said it...thoughts?? Thanks

Where will you locate the fill and vent?  You won't be able to mount them on the gunnel.  Expect to get some amount of spillage inside your boat any time you gas up.  And I'm not sure what the fumes/smell will be like with the vent inside the cockpit.  But hey, smaller boats with portable tanks have the same issue (with the vent anyway, not necessarily with the filling part).

Im thinking portable tank, 30-40gal, deck box has a lid for fill, maybe some vents, bottom back for the box....

19-1 had the fuel tank mount under the CC from factory and vented and fill through the CC never had aproblem with mine but have now put the tank under the floor fill and vent still in CC. I have the original tank for sale if you have any interest.

Shouldn't be any issues with it in that location. The only thing is space seems to be at a premium with these boats.

yeah, I know...I kept looking at a conventional leaning post, not large enough gas tank would fit underneath, behind, would take even more space, hence the dock box with tank inside...
