I have an old 1986 Yamaha 90 hp 3 cylinder.
The top piston is shot and there is some scoring on the cylinder wall.
S/B less than .40 but it can be sleeved if necessary.
I may just go new, However, I think I will just replace the powerhead.
My question is this.
Should I remove and send to a shop for the rebuild or just purchase a rebuilt powerhead.
Does anyone know the quality of work from Chris Carson
or the Powerhead Exchange in Tampa?

dont know either one of the but what are their warranties? do they use china parts?
those motors are pretty simple to tear down, have the one cylinder opened up, get a bearing kit, the one over sized piston and rod (if rod if even necessary) and put it back together.

How would you hone the cylinder doing it that way?
Or do you mean to tear down the motor to the block?

I've used Chris Carson in the past. I highly recommend him. He is a straight shooter and will tell you straight up what your motor needs once they get it apart. He came to my shop and pulled my Force power head in minutes and took it back to his shop in the keys. A couple of days later he calls and says my crank is shot but he had a good used one he use in the rebuild so it would cost a little bit more. A few weeks later he came back and installed the rebuilt power head on my boat and had it running and adjusted in a lick of time. He handed explained the break in procedure to me and handed me a written copy. That motor ran super strong for several years until I sold it. I saw the motor on the guys boat a year ago still running strong. I also used some of his reeds in my Merc. Call Chris and talk to him. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have. He may or may not remember me but tell him Bruce Smith the tent guy in Clearwater told you to call him.

yes. but if chris is as good as wingtime said, ask for a ballpark price first on a full rebuild. it can only go down from there.

He said 1500 for the powerhead
2200 (dialed in) if I supply electronics and carbs.
