The smells of summer -- the sweet fragrance of newly opened flowers, the scent of freshly cut grass and the aroma of meats cooking on the backyard grill -- will soon be upon us. Now, researchers are reporting that the very same beer that many people enjoy at backyard barbeques could, when used as a marinade, help reduce the formation of potentially harmful substances in grilled meats. The study appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
I.M.P.L.V.O. Ferreira and colleagues explain that past studies have shown an association between consumption of grilled meats and a high incidence of colorectal cancer. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are substances that can form when meats are cooked at very high temperatures, like on a backyard grill. And high levels of PAHs, which are also in cigarette smoke and car exhaust, are associated with cancers in laboratory animals, although it's uncertain if that's true for people. Nevertheless, the European Union Commission Regulation has established the most suitable indicators for the occurrence and carcinogenic potency of PAHs in food and attributed maximum levels for these compounds in foods. Beer, wine or tea marinades can reduce the levels of some potential carcinogens in cooked meat, but little was known about how different beer marinades affect PAH levels, until now.
The researchers grilled samples of pork marinated for four hours in Pilsner beer, non-alcoholic Pilsner beer or a black beer ale, to well-done on a charcoal grill. Black beer had the strongest effect, reducing the levels of eight major PAHs by more than half compared with unmarinated pork. "Thus, the intake of beer marinated meat can be a suitable mitigation strategy," say the researchers.

Usually this stuff is full of garbage and cooks down to half what it starts out as due to fat, etc. These have almost no shrinkage and little fat. I'm a Johnsonville fan as well - they seem to do quality products versus the byproduct-laced competition. Try some of the Bacon and Cheese Grillers - you will like them!
-
Will do, John. I will even purchase them from a store I like (Publix), as opposed to a store I don't like (Winn Dicky)... :salut:
-
We are getting our first Publix here - the store is under construction now. Folks are excited about it - competition never hurts! :bounce:

I can imagine, bud...
I remember when I was a kid, coming down on vaca from Chicago and seeing a Piggly Wiggly, thinking..."What the hell is that? Is that a grocery store? And it's called Piggly Wiggly?" But the south grows on you. My brother and SIL have lived in Chi-town all their lives. They can't believe we eat rice with other foods BESIDES Chinese...

So where any of you in the Publix in Ocala last week to witness the gal shopping wearing nothing more than a skimpy T shirt.
Never any excitement like that in my local Safeway
Our local rock radio station has goofy news every morning, I got a kick out of this one thinking maybe one of you where there to see it.

Sorry Bill, haven't been to (actually, just through, on I-75) Ocala in probably 40 years. Ocala is not exactly high on the list of destinations here in FL...

i actually like ocala. or should i say the areas immediately around it. my mom just sold her house out there. spent a lot of time there. all i can say is, you dont see many girls that make you want to look too long. spend 5 in their local walmart. :pale:

Try Lake County, Rick, around the Harris Chain. Big Lake Harris, Little Lake Harris, Lake Dora, Lake Eustis, Lake Griffin, Lake Yale. Beautiful country, rolling, and the lakes are big. The 230 would feel right at home there... :thumright:

Bucks birthday was just yesterday, he turned 1 year old so he still just a pup.
I think we got lucky with him, I wouldn't exactly call him laid back...he has his moments when I just have to laugh and think geez Buck you are nuts.
All in all he is turning in to a great companion, he hardly ever leaves my side. When I feed him he will stop eating to come check out where I am then go back to eating he will do that 2 or 3 times
He's loves attention and will lick you to death.
Lets just say he keeps me young and on my toes.
