hey guys my powerhead has blown for the second time -99 Johnson 225, not going to rebuild it again.
looking to possibly repower if i can find the right deal. wondering how the extra weight of 4 strokes will affect my ride. should i go with 225 again 250 ? 300?
I have already had the transom rebuild a few years ago. anyone out there with this hull have any thoughts.

What about a etec or a late model Ficht injected motor?
Question, what happened to cause the power head to blow twice?

On a 246, you should have no problems with hanging a 4S. That model had a twin engine option, a pair of 140s would far outweigh a single 250 4S...

As for the engine, I believe I had the first year this engine had an externally mounted oil tank and I was running from cape cod to Nantucket and the power head went. I had plenty of oil but think the line from the resovir to the engine got jammed or gummed up as the engine seized and had a few dime size holes in 2 cylcinders and a lot of metal blow into the engine casing. after that had the engine rebuild on a new powerhead as was less only a few years old. at the same time we went back to mixing oil and gas together, it worked well for years with the exception of getting gummed up if run at low speeds to much. then mid summer 2013 had some idle issue and found out that it could not be set correctly. boat yard checked it out and port cylinder is only registering 75#'s while the other five are in the 115-120# range. ran the boat the rest of the summer into october and has actualy been running better than ever. however dont fell comfortable taking it ofshore any it could go at any time. thats why i need something new.
in other news my deck is soft all over so trying to decide if i should have it redone as well.
most people are teling me between the repower and deck i should just buy a 8 yearold contender or regulator and be done with it. i cant decide.

Regarding the money...if you like the boat, you could go with a good used two stroke, deal with the rebuild later.

Depending on what VRO system or OMS system you have there should have been a oil alarm on the first power head failure. As for the piston problem I'd say that was either a clogged carb causing that cylinder to be lean. Or the re-builder didn't do a very good job. The boat looks great if you ask me!

thanks for the thumbs up on the boat. It was my grandfathers and passed down. have spent countless hours sanding and trying to keep it up. one of these winters will get it all gripped and really do it up. but right now focus is to get her running as I like to use her!
I would love twins but it doesnt make sense. I am usualy not going to far offshore so it would not justify the extra costs. I plan on putting a new engine on it and running it for the next 15 -20+ years so the extra maintance of twins would catch up to me.
found someone selling new verados w warrenty on THT asking 18k for the 300. seems like a pretty good deal to me. thoughts? can this hull handle 300 hp? my guess is yes she's a tank.
as for the verados I am just learning I may need power assist stearing, is this true? seems like something else to break in my mind.
The itch is growing and this snow on the way is not helping.

Looks like a suzuki 4 stroke may be in this boats future.
does anyone know what max hp is rated for? my coast guard plates are salt and sun faded so can no longer be read.
I am thinking 250 hp. do you guys think the 300 would be worth the extra $$

In 1980 they were rated at 280hp. They would later be "re-badged" from 246 to 250 and rated at 300hp. Same hull I would think.
You can check your hull date via the HIN but I would guess 300 is doable without any problem on that hull.

Have you priced twins? It's hard to believe, but you can often buy two 115/125s for less than one 225/250. Several dealers around here selling new 115 Optimax motors for $8K... And you can troll on one to save fuel, and also have the safety benefit of that second motor. Just sayin'

You need to consider weight more than horse power. A big four stroke would be a tad too heavy for this girl if you ask me.
