Title: added lights but they dont work
Post by: love2fish on December 02, 2013, 10:36:53 PM
have the basic/standard trailer lights on my aluminum trailer... everything worked fine (running, brake, turn).

i added the SMITH guide-on post LED top lights. These are the basic marker lights; red on the back and amber on the front. the wiring is a pre-set positive lead and a ground. the directions say to simply splice into the existing running light wire (brown) and then drill and screw in the ground for the new lights.

I did this as directived and i either get: 1 pole light and both trailer lights, or both pole lights and no trailer lights. (noticed this as i messed with the connection/grounds)

Am I doing something wrong or have too many grounds?

I mounted my new lights' ground  on the same bolt that the existing trailer lights are grounded to.

Thanks!

First off it sounds like you have some corrosion in your wires, not getting enough current to supply all the lights or just a bad ground, second an aluminum trailer is not a very good ground to start with, do yourself a favor, put a ground buss on the tongue and run the ground from you truck to it, then run a ground from every light to that buss, the trailer places sell a wire kit for this, it's alittle work but once it's done say good bye to most if not all your light problems down the road, I'm going on three years since I did this to mine and I swear by it.
