Title: Capt-Seasick 270 xf rebuild
Post by: captseasick on November 27, 2013, 11:01:05 PM
So I finally got my Aquasport 270xf !! Bought it this past sunday in KeyLargo with a 15k tri axle trailer..... So when cleaning the boat I noted the middle main stringer that runs up to the bow has tons of wet leaves and mud on each side b/c the boat was left with the bow either level or slightly down..... How can I tell if the stringers are bad seeing as they are foam filled and then heavly glassed as thier main streigth.... How often do these type of stringers go bad???  I have heard that the foam is not structual and just used to shape the stringer.... want to make sure the boat is strrong before dumping 10k plus in her....   Other than that she is missing the Port motor.. but has the starboard counter motor.... not an issue as I can build motors and plan on building 2 320hp motors to push her big a$$.... gonna rebuild the soft rear deck and put a large below deck fish box between the gas tanks and relocate the waste and fresh water tanks.... Gonna need plenty of advise from you guys as this is the biggest boat project to date....  I believe the transmissions are velvet drive 71c's.... should there be an issue with them hooked up to 320hp? anyone know a rebuild kit to make them handle it?  If anyone has this boat ... how is the side exhaust... does it pull the fumes into the boat while underway or is it better to put it out the rear and close in the side holes.....Ill post pics as soon as I figure out how.  Any advise is allways appreciated!

Glad to see that you tracked one down.  :salut:
I moved your post to the Rebuild Forum, just continue this topic as you get her back in shape.
As for pics the first thing to do is upload your pics to either your photo gallery here or to another photo hosting site like photobucket.com.  Once you have that done you can follow the topic located at the top of every forum that walks you through getting them into your posts. It's easy. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8839 (http://www.classicaquasport.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8839)

As for the stringers, after you clean up all the mud and stuff you can drill a small hole near the bottom of the stringer and see what is on the drill bit and if any water weeps out.

We're here to help as you have problems.  Make sure you take pics of the HIN stamped on the transom and post that in this thread too.

Seasick, check out the specs regarding max HP in this PDF...http://www.marineryachts.com/borg_manual.pdf (http://www.marineryachts.com/borg_manual.pdf)  Says 310 HP for the 71C, I would imagine a gear set, maybe output shaft swap with 72C components would get you what you want.  Of course, de-tuning the motors would be a viable alternative as well.  You're only talking 20 HP reduction in output...

I will soon... So I tapped all my stingers and they all sound solid and no signs of delamination.. so very happy about that.  Still need to put a bow eye in.. Will take pics of that event too... plan on shapeing a 2x4 to the front bow to run all the way from top to bottom and then epoxy fiberglass the whole thing in along with a steel plate that will run along the 2x4... dont want to break my boat when geting it back on to the trailer via wench that last foot, so really want to over do it YES i WILL TRAILER THIS BOAT ( legally)... plus i like to over do everyting... even to the point of a 25k lb eye for my 10k boat.  Also love the torsion axle trailer!  It pulled and rode great for 400 miles of the trip home!  Even blew a tire ( tri axle) and didnt know it till we got gas lol!  So I have breaks on 2 axles and I noted that FL law wants em on all the axles... not sure why... boat stops fast and easy with 2.... but I guess i need to put another set on....  Another plan of mine when rebuildig the rear deck, its soft, is to remove the fresh water and waste tank and relocate to another area, prob cabin, and build one huge below deck fish boat so no coolers to take up any room on my 110 sq ft deck.... we spearfish... so will have tank racks taking up enough room and gear.... also drawing otu plans for a custom hardtop that my dad and I will build.. I like having a enclouser incase of rain.... again will post step by step till shes done... i figure a year to finish her and her to be perfect

Seasick, nothing wrong with a little bit of overkill on a boat... :salut:

Thinking about your motors, a pair of 350 MAGs would be perfect, 300 HP per, proven motors, and work with your trannies...

My Dad and I build race motors so gonna build a pair of vortec 350's at about 310hp a piece.... seeing that, that is the limit of a velvet 71.... my biggest issue is understanding the diffreences of the reverse/counter rotation motor...  and a good place to buy the parts or a short block for a good price.... I have a running std rotation that im gonna rebuild and throw in.... just dont want to screw up the counter rotation one by not doing something right... I have the old counter rotation motor but dont want to reuse any internals if I dont hav to.... I like stronger.. new stuff.. that will hold up for 3000 hrs of 3200 to 3500 rpm use.... plus anyone know a place to pick up used part... boat was missing one velvet 71c and I can buy those form ebay ( would liek to get local ) but I need stuff like bell housing and so on....

Trailer is perfect... looks like it has never seen water! all the brakes work, bunks look brandnew.... has washdown already on it to where I can hook a hose to it and walk away for a min.... tows like a dream... 15,000 lb trailer... Ill get some pics of the inside this week.  So the deck is soft... so goona build a new one.... any suggestions on the wood to use... I plan on fiberglassing over the wood after I shape it, so also what type of fiberglass to use and oz..... havnt got my fiberglass dvd yet... yes I have fiberglassed in the past but that doesnt mean I did it right.... cant wait to move the fresh water tank and waste tank and see how big the new below deck fish box is gonna be... fuel tanks appear to be over 2ft apart and it will run about 4.5ft long... should be a nice project..... and I found out last night... posting pics on here is really easy.

I live in Orangepark Fl, near Jacksonville... I keep my boat in Callahan on my dads 10 acres.... my association frowns on big boats lol..... and my real name is Brian.   Have another question while on.... the side and transome of the boat flex alittle too much for my likeing....yes I know all boats have some flex on the sides.. any reason I cant run a couple of side and rear "stringers" to stiffen the boat.... would it hurt anything ..... I have to stiffen up the back regardless to handle the huge dive platform I am going to make... needs to handle atleast 600 to 700 lbs... ( 2 divers and gear plus assist person on to boat pulling em on)... thanks again guys

By all means Brian, stiffen up the hull sides.  We used to use Prisma beams at PL...http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/us ... +Stiffener (http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=57774&familyName=Prisma+Composite+Preforms+Hull+Stiffener)  They work great, I'd recommend glassing them in on the diagonal, give you some top to bottom as well as fore and aft stiffness...

Brian, she's a beaut!

On the rebuild, add as you see fit....but keep in mind weight. Doesn't take long to add an extra several hundred pounds.

In hindsight,  we goofed on ours in a couple of places with unnecessary weight :?

Just another 2 cent consideration :thumright: ....sweet ride!

Scotty, keep in mind, on a 22-2 CC, extra weight can have a very detrimental effect, given the base weight of the boat.  A 270?  Can absorb a lot more added weight, given it's base weight, without affecting it's performance.

Kind of an apples(your boat)/oranges(Brian's boat) type of deal...

Agree. But weight is weight...and added weight is added money.

The link/product recommended is great for the need.

Thought was, add as much as needed to structurally stiffen...but not overkill.  Excess weight also affects performance and fuel economy.

OK, so need some more wisdom, hope yall are still checking in on us big boat guys.... so I am starting my rebuild now, have the windless off and anchor locker opened up.... gonna cut the locker floor out for bow eye placement and then put floor back in with a drain to drain the water out of the boat not the bilge.... so I noted that my acrillic escape hatch has multiple crack and is leaking around the seal... so who can I get the seal from and possible a new hatch???   Thanks again guys... pics soon to come!

Brian, you're either looking at a Bomat hatch or a Lewmar hatch...most likely a Bomar.  They're owned by Pompanette now, I'd contact the New Hampshire location...http://www.pompanette.com/pomp.nsf/Mark ... _contactus (http://www.pompanette.com/pomp.nsf/Marketing/bomar_contactus)

So took down the head liner and all the inside teak trim out and found a broken heart in the bathroom....... Where a hole was drilled behind the window frame in the left corner to run the wires for the wiper motor wasn't sealed correctly so every time it rained for years it leaked into the ceiling of the bathroom and destroyed wood!!! have most of it pulled out, still have a little left to go.....  So I have resealed the windows and will glass the hole in to prevent this from ever happening again... the rest of the pics are of the bottom antifoul.. which is like 2 quarters stacked thick being sanded off and my delux stairs to get into the boat lol.... also my new bow eye and today finished my backing wood which is made from a 4x4 and about 2.5 inches thick... will take pics of glassing process..... hope pics work today....

Those steps are hilarious!!! Where did you get them?

Glassing that ceiling back in could be pretty messy! All the work you have to do now just because someone didn't seal one hole.

Im gonna paint up one with the boat mainly white... with red lines and a dark blue area where the name goes... and see how that looks.... man my boat is messy right now!!

OK,next update... heres the pics of the backer board I made for the bow eye, again made from a 4x4 post, its 26 inches long and 2.5 inches thick and 4 inches wide and I conformed it to the entire front of the boat so stress is pulled from almost the entire front of boat, my dad is getting me a 2 foot 1/4 inch piece of steel, its at his shop just getting one of his guys to cut it.  Plan is to glass one piece of thick mat between it and the boat and then cover it with 3 pieces of 10oz cloth going 8 to 12 inches out on each side and of course use epoxy.  Still grinding on the bottom pain.... must be 10 coats on the bottom of this boat! using 36 grit on a 7inch grinder to get it off! once off will coat bottom with 4 coats of petite epoxy high build primer, $500 well worth of protection.  The other pics are of the cancer wood all off and the bathroom walls down.  Tested the potty today as well... works, I like how the waste comes out the bottom of the boat... not sure how legal that is now.. but I am putting a 10 gallon waste tank up front on the starboard side and a 29 gallon water tank on the port side in the front. I don't like using sea water so removing the seawater uptake valve and gonna glass that in and use only fresh water for flushing.  BTW if an administrator would like to change the topic of this thread to 270xf rebuild they can pls... not sure if I can.... I am redoing this boat from front to rear and hope it helps others out.
