Title: Elecrical help
Post by: Capn Mark on April 29, 2013, 08:42:13 PM
Getting ready to start the 196 project and was wondering if there is a good way to clean up the terminal strips on some used bus bars,  They are in pretty good shape and just need a little touching up before I re-use them.

Absolutely. Take a small toothbrush-size bronze brush to it. Then spray it with the old standby, WD-40...or Corrosion X, etc.

The bronze works the same as a steel brush...but won't leave steel remnants that can rust.

A bronze brush is one of the best tools you can have in a "marine " tool box. It is an excellent prep tool (when used correctly) for teak prep and as stated never stains the deck cause it don't rust.

Some vinegar or citric acid found in the food canning section will get that tarnish off and actually make it tarnish resistant.  Just don't use any products like Brasso with ammonia.  Ammonia never stops eating it.

If your bus bars are out  allready, put them in a bowl or pan and pour a coke over them (country home remedy), let them sit for an hour or two then wipe them off, most of the corrosion should come off, any left can be hit with the bronze toothbrush..then give them a coat of wd-40 :thumright:

Little-known secret - if they are brass or copper - soak them in ammonia you buy at the grocery store.  After about an hour, a quick brushing with a toothbrush and they will look like new.   :thumleft:
