Title: Speaking of gas mileage

Since gas seems stuck somewhere around $3/gal, I went out last week and did some testing.  Here's what I got on my 22-2 CCP and Merc 200 carb model, using GPS speed, my NavMan 4100 fuel flow meter, and Quicksilver tach:

RPM  Gal/Hr  Speed MPG
3000 -  8.3  -    24   -     2.9
3500 -  8.5  -    26   -     3.1
4000 -  9.5  -    28   -     2.9
4500 -  11   -    30   -     2.7
5000 -  15   -    37   -     2.5
5500 -  18   -    40   -     2.2

I have always felt 3800-4000 RPM seems like a good cruise - this kind of confirms that - decent speed and mileage combo for this setup.  I am thinking about adding a hydrofoil and seeing if it makes much difference.  Has anyone done a before/after for mileage with a foil?

Maybe you saw this when I posted it a few months ago but thought it would be worth posting again.  Different power set-up and it was a flatback,  but still an interesting comparison...

Even with radically different motors and twins versus a single, the twenty-five mph zone is still the sweet spot for the 22-2.  That's Fred Coburn, who started it all, launching the boat.

Cool stuff.  I find that mine has trouble staying on top below 25 mph.  Maybe it is because of the added weight of the tower?  With my setup that is around 4000 rpm.  My best cruise seems to be 26-27 statute mph (GPS).  When my fuel flow meter bothers to worK, it shows about 13 GPH at that speed.

BTW, good luck with the Navman.  I have the F2100 fuel flow meter and have had to replace the sensor twice in one year.

JimCT, thanks for posting that page with Mr. Coburn pushing on the bow of his creation, that was awesome to both see and read, even from 1966!!!  What a great little read.

Try adding trim tabs. They make a WORLD of difference for me.  I am on plane at about 16 mph. I have been thrilled with mine. I got used ones from Ebay. Always go with the widest ones possible for your transom. You will love it.
