Title: MY NEW BOAT!!!
Post by: jahoward1 on February 08, 2013, 12:06:08 AM
What's up everybody?  Well I finally bought her - a 2001 Aquasport 225 Explorer with the 225hp Yamaha.  We did the survey and seatrial today and she can flat out fly!  Have a few minor things to attend to; including, getting a prop with the right pitch (Bob told me to ask Scott about that) and chaging the fuel filter and the water pump.  Unfortunately, I have been having big time trouble posting pictures lately.  I've done it before so... Oh well, this is the one.  http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/2001/Aq ... ted-States (http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/2001/Aquasport-225-Explorer-2494540/LBI/NJ/United-States)  I'll post the few pictures I have as soon as I figure out what I'm doing wrong.  C ya

James

PS. Now I need a trailer and some insurance

Lol. Thanks everybody.  Y'all didn't think I'd ever do it huh?  Anyway, I want to ask you guys something kinda just for fun and also for info.  Everybody knows that I need a trailer but which is better, bunk or roller and torsion axle or leaf springs? And what about aluminum vs galvanized?

Ive found a place near where the boat is located that would sell me a brand new, 2013 Sea Lion bunk trailer with leaf spring suspension for right around $3K.  They also have a roller trailer with torsion axles for and $3.6. Thats why I've been looking for a good used one.  Price, especially at this point, is extremely important and will have the greatest influence on my decision. And used trailers make some of the unaffordable trailers affordable.

So what's your preference?

James

They're all classics - not made anymore.  Doesn't have to be 42 like my 170 to fit the definition.

But an Aquasport none the less!  And an EXCELLENT model at that!  We here at Classic Aquasport welcome ALL the years and models that Aquasport has built over the years, from the first C & S boats (before the name Aquasport was conceived), to the last 275 Explorers that rolled off the line in '05...

"Classic" is a VERY relative term... :thumright:

Me thinks the Amberjack trailer is a tad big...

We had a photo shoot a few years ago at PL, next morning we had to drag all the boats back to the plant.  Pulled a 18 Flats on a triple axle...she fit just fine...

Hi fellas, I know a lot of you guys are living it up in th Sunshine State and not scraping snow of your boat (like me) but there's a new trailer guy who's actually not that far from me.  His company is called Dolphin Trailers, website: http://dolphinboattrailers.com/index.html (http://dolphinboattrailers.com/index.html) . A friend of mine that's in the boating industry told me to stay away from him.  He sells trailers but the only trailer that he wants to offer me is a top of the line aluminum Loadrite trailer.  There might be a conflict    Anyway, check out his website, let me know whatcha think.

I'm trying to finish up. I'm between Sea Insure and BoatUS and I'm already a Sea Two member.  I really forgot how involved this can be.  Anyway, thanks for reading.

Lets face it... The difference between a good trailer and a great trailer is the hardware. Aluminum I beam is aluminum I beam. Winches are winches, tires are tires. Roller trailers are much higher maintenance and give single point contact instead of good beefy bunk support under the stringers. I would be shopping brakes, like insisting on Kodiak stainless discs and calipers. Stainless steel hardware upgrade for the entire trailer. Check your trailer brake laws for the GVWR. Manufactures can sell you a trailer that is totally illegal to use in your state because the weight of the trailer by itself is way under what the law requires for brakes, put a 3500# boat on it and your illegal. Nobody needs brakes until you need them. Rear end someone and let the attorneys and insurance companies get a hold of your trailer that was not properly equipped and your ass is grass.

To reiterate, Shop Hardware!

If you are trailering locally only a couple of times a year,(ie,boat in slip or on a mooring), you can scrimp on the trailer a little.  But if you plan on launching and hauling each time you use the boat then a new trailer is imperative as is rinsing and maintaining.  It sucks to deal with the trailer and it is usually the last thing that gets any attention, but it sucks worse to be sitting on the side of the road with a blown out bearing on a Saturday morning with a boat full of bait, beer and rods....

Oh and bunk/torsion gets my vote too.  I am also a fan of the oil bath hubs or some of the other more water resistant hubs discussed in the trailer forum.  I don't have brakes because I only trailer a couple of miles each way under 35 mph but the few times someone has pulled out in front of me and I had to bury the brake pedal to the floor, she really didn't want to stop...

And, you are not the only one watching the snow pile up on your boat.....
Dan

Oh well, I tried to go the cheap route but to no avail. Just put the non refundable deposit on a 2013 Loadrite trailer with a 6000lb cap. Hey everybody, James here.  I thought my boat would be home tonight but the trailer had to be adjusted.  I didn't know how involved that process was until I heard my brand new Loadrite trailer scraping on the ground after the boat had been transferred.   There are some things that need to be moved, lengthened, extended, etc...  We're working on it again in the morning so hopefully...  We'll see

Not to contradict anybody, but the sea lion w/ bunks and leafs is a great trlr., i love mine under my 200ccp, gonna change it from roller to bunk this year, it is a '96 and the only rust is the fenders from rocks pounding them.

No contradictions taken!  There are hundreds of excellent trailer builders across the US, oftimes we may not know of them because they're main business is basically local (within a few hundred miles or so), thus they don't have nationwide exposure.

Mention Owens & Sons here in the Tampa/St. Pete area and every boater knows about their trailers (yeah, I know, Aaron...).  But mention them in Seattle and you'll get a "Never heard of 'em" reply...

She finally left the marina today.  Who, my new boat, where my new trailer was being adjusted for $250.00. The boat and trailer were there for 3-4 weeks and I was getting madder and madder every day.  My pride said, "Those people aren't putting you first, they're not giving you the proper respect since you did buy the trailer from them." In my mind, since I bought it there, they should have had it done immediately. Why you ask?  Well... Um... So it could hurry up and sit at the storage facility until spring, that's why.  Last week, I stubbornly drove through blowing snow and sleet to the marina to move the boat and trailer to another facility because I was fed up. However, I had to swallow my pride and leave empty handed when I saw how badly the boat was sitting on the trailer.  I had a moment of sanity.

So anyway, I retrieved her today and she was riding proudly on her brand new Load Rite bunk trailer.  And you know what, since I wasn't feeling bitchy anymore, the marina staff "appeared" to be extremely nice and helpful just like when I bought the trailer.  I have to admit, it did feel good when I looked in the rearview mirror and saw that huge boat following me.  So, she's now at the mechanic and hopefully she'll be ready to fish when he's all done. Anyway, just checking in and admitting that I'm still pretty crazy--C ya

Yeah Bob, I know. I was asking myself yesterday what was my big hurry and I couldn't give a real good answer to even me. I guess I just wanted to look at her and show her off. I also wanted to tinker with her and climb aboard and look at this and plan that and compare this to that and...  You get the picture--nothing all that pressing for something I'm planning on having a long time.

So anyway, my new dream fish is Mahi Mahi and I'm told I can catch them in NJ waters. Can't wait. C ya

Hey everybody,

It's been a while but I wanted to let everybody know that I took my 225 out twice and she runs great.  She's a lot more boat that my 200 Osprey and much more powerful--just trying to get used to it.  I thought I was having trouble getting her on plane but I just needed to give her more power.  And I'm learning to use the trim tabs and the windlass.

One thing that's nice is that everything works on this boat.  Absolutely everything.  Every light, every bilge pump, every systems, everything!  However, she really needs to be polished and waxed.  Gonna start that tomorrow right after we get back from our first fishing trip of the year.  C you guys later

Heeeeyyyyeeee.....   Doesn't it look like I wrote that last post

Anyway, my family and I went out but no striped bass (I wasn't really expecting any).  However, I might have been a little premature when I said everything works.  First thing, after we got on the water, I attempted to fill the live well.  Water started to fill but only in squirts.  The water that was squirting in was still pink from winterization but it would have taken the livewell a very long time to fill at the rate it was going--but I guess it was working.  I was a little more concerned with the transom shower.  Before going out, I used my garden hose and put fresh water in the tank.  After we were on the water, I activated the switch and waited for water to come out of the hose fitting.  However, water squirted out once, then sputtered a little but it never really worked.  I was wondering if it needed to primed but if so, how?  And lastly, I played with the windlass and the anchor deployed and retrieved smoothly.  But after the rode was out approximately 50ft (kinda hard to guess-ti-mate) the windlass stopped.  I looked inside and saw what appeared to be a large tangle or knot in the rope that prevented further deployment.  I think I can work that out on dry land.

Well other than those minor issues, the boat and engine ran smoothly.  She is definitely more powerful that my Osprey.  Funny thing though, I never knew how much fun it would be to sit on the bow seat and fish.  My kids loved it and I liked it too    It looks like I have a couple more kinks to work out and then it's saltwater time--C y'all

Not sure of your baitwell setup but on my 215 you can turn the water inlet inside the baitwell to shut the water off. Yours might be almost closed and just letting the water squirt in. Also check your valve if your baitwell pump is also a washdown pump to make sure it is turned to baitwell.

One other thing is check the intake water screen to the pump and see if it's clogged up

I checked and the valve was half closed.  Once I opened the valve, the water didn't gush in like I was expected but it began filling a hell of a lot faster than it had been.  For a faster result, I still might continue to use my half of Tide bottle to fill it.  Funny story: Last Friday, my family and I were cleaning the boat.  While this was going on, I started, once again, looking for the transom shower.  I called Seabob and he patiently guided me to it.  I think I actually squealed, I was so happy.  That's one of the few things on my boat that I can't live without--Thanks Seabob!
