Why play around with a 250 or 300 when you can go to 1200? He has a pair available:

They don't give them away either

I think the weight of that thing would sink our boats!

Me likey...
Just for comparison, found a 2011 price list out of the UK for Yanmars, the 440HP model went for just shy of $61K, not including tranny. Basically looking at $130K for a pair ready to go in the boat...

I think these would be more practical

Absolutely, Scott. Maybe someday 7 will even produce them...

What the heck are those? Outboard diesels?

Ok I see now. I wonder whos V8 they are using. The problem with using automotive engines in a continous high rpm usecsuch as a boat is the valves.

The 7 engine uses a new-generation GM/Chevy block mounted upright with a dry sump oil system. It could be a nice setup if they use an aluminum block to keep the weight down.

I like the way the 7s sound when they spool up.

7 Marine is a bunch of "ex" Merc guys (and have the backing of Merc) that sort of burst on the scene a couple years ago. All the gold chain crowd has been chomping at the bit to get them on their boats, but so far no production releases from 7. 557 HP, uses a ZF gearbox, so in theory the LU should be pretty stout. The price, obviously, is the kicker at N of $70K per motor, not to mention a transom pretty much has to be "purpose built" to handle the weight and torque.
I like the idea in that I think once you go past triples (pretty common on bigger CCs for some time now) the law of diminishing returns kicks in (what do you really get for that 4th, or even 5th, motor...), plus I think the boat looks...stupid. I'm one that thinks, if I want 1200 HP, give me a pair of Merc 600SCs and call it a day. Yeah, I know, sterndrives, cockpit room, that sort of thing, I'm just saying...

One of those MAN's was put in a Holland 38 hull (downeast style lobster boat) by the folks from Tenants Harbor Boatyard (local MAN dealer) up here that ended up yacht finished by Hollands Boat Shop. It had a Borg Warner gear with a trolling valve. The shaft was a an evolution system (I don't remember the size) and the wheel was stupid over square at about a 24x38.. When she was put in gear with the trolling valve on, it would do an easy 7kts, so you were in and out of gear constantly going throught the anchorage. Before the skipper would flip the trolling valve off he would yell and look around to make sure everyone was holding on. As soon as the switch was flipped she would jump right up to 15kts at idle. When the throttle was opened it was a scary feeling for a round bildged boat going over 40... But didn't it roar out the 12 inch stove pipe of an exhaust! What a sound  :!:
