Steering cable pathway

I have a 1998 200 Osprey and screwed up pulling the steering cable out.
Yes, I did tie a string to the cable end at the helm but forgot to tie the string off at the helm.
Now I have to no return guide. Is there a tunnel I need use for this cable. I can
feel my way into what I think is a tunnel but am having a difficult time getting
the snake as it goes in different directions down from the helm. Any ideas would be appreciated
