Looking at a wellcraft 1999 walk around need advice
« on: October 11, 2011, 01:55:18 PM »
Does anyone know if the 1999 wellcraft 22' walkaround had wood stringers? I understand its the same hull as the 215 explorer. It has a 5.7 litre mercruiser does anyone have any experiance with this inboard /outboard? I've never owned one. Curious how the gas efficiency would rank compared to the newer outboards. Is there alot of extra maintenance and what is the lifespan if it has not been run in salt water? Any expertise or experiance would be appreciated.

I take it you're looking at a 210 Coastal.  If it's actually the 22 Walkaround model, then that is a totally different boat...

I'm looking at the 22' walkaround exactly like the one you posted. It is the same design as the 215 explorer. Any wood in that year or any other problems other than the fish boxes? It is the inboard outboard with the 5.7

Note the difference in port lights and the pulpit.  The I/O Bob linked to is the old Excel 22WA, which later became the WC 23 and 24 WA.  The 210 Coastal had no bow pulpit...

Well I'm still fuzzy on what boat you're lookin' at   :ScrChin: and even if I knew, I couldn't comment on the wood question. Since I'd venture to guess you will find little concerning "known problems" with the Wellcraft 22 WAC (Excel) on this site, here's a link to what we have on the 215 EX which of course is a 210 Wellcraft.

It does appear that your questions on the power train are at least being addressed to some degree.

Good luck.

No, the 1999 Wellcraft 22 Walkaround does not have wood stringers, it has foam filled glass stringers. It does have balsa cored decks and marine plywood bulkheads. Dunno what the transom is, yet. I suspect wood.

Yes, it is the sistership of the Aquasport 215 Explorer.

I have nothing good to say about I/O's, but others will no doubt have positives.

2 weeks ago I picked up a 1998 AS 215 - in the limited time I've had to probe its innards and to run it offshore, I can only give it a big thumbs up.

Bobber,
I was working for Wellcraft in '99.  The WC version of the 215 Explorer was called the 210 Coastal.  The "22 Walkaround" was an entirely different boat...

Thanks Bob.
I started to post earlier today but I'm glad you answered. I spent some time digging and while the boats kinda, sorta, well maybe look similar (to a degree)   I would have guess they were different.
That's what lead to my confusion on which Wellcraft model b.staub was looking at. :?
You were there so that seals it.

Best thing about digging around was that I found a couple of early 90s 210 coastals that from a distance share traits with my 210 WAC. They (Wellcraft) had similar shaped windows and what appears as an optional bolt on pulpit like the Aqua. I couldn't find interior pics but the ass ends look similar. It appears that Wellcraft continued producing the 210 Coastal straight through the 90s while Aqua dropped their 210. In 96 the Coastal was updated with the style it carried to the end (05) and Aqua of course added the "215" to their line. As we know, same boats/different decals.

I love this stuff.

When I started my search that led me to my AS 215, it was suggested that the AS 215 and the Wellcraft 22 Walkaround were sisterships

And after looking at several WC 22 WA's, I am quite certain that it is indeed the same as the AS 215 with a few minor differences.

Funny thing is, the WC 22 generally goes for several thousand more than the AS 215 of the same vintage and equipment.

Knowing that Aquasport brought the 215 EX on board in 1996, the Wellcraft reference for 96 shows a 210 Coastal. Wellcraft had made a 210C before but it had been out of the lineup after 92 (according to the link). and this was a different style WAC. Both share the same specs and we call them clones.

In 97 Wellcraft again references the 210 Coastal and a 220 Coastal. Very different boats with the 220 C sporting the Euro transom.

98 is identical to 97

99 the 210 Coastal disappears and a 22 Walkaround is now listed. Specs for the 22 Walkaround increase the beam by an 1" and there are differences in appearance. It seems (on paper anyway) that the 22 WA model replaced the 210 C, though other than the differences listed, they share the same hull length and dead rise.

2000 and 01 continue with the 22 WA (no 210 Coastal listed)

02 and 03 list a 220 Coastal with the same spec. The 22 WA disappears.

04 shows a 22 WA again but the spec change is 2" smaller beam (from 8'-4") and the hull length is 2" shorter (from 21'-4')
The 04 215 Aqua EX lists an 8' beam with the original 210 Coastal hull length of 21'-4"

By 05 the 22/220/210  were gone from the Wellcraft lineup and it was Aqua's last production year.

An inch here or there probably doesn't lend itself to a totally different hull but we also must take into account the knowledge of someone who actually was part of the production process. Using catalogs and sales notes to dealers need to be taken for what they are but from what you linked to, one could argue that the hulls of those models were the same and the cap molds altered.

Thanks for posting.
