88 200 striper sole replacement
« on: July 03, 2015, 02:49:21 PM »
Been a while since I decided to do it but finally cut out the sole of my 88 striper 200, just have a few questions;
1. the foam is nice and dry since the boat has been out of water for 6+ years, should I still remove and replace it all?
2. the stringers and everything else looks good, the stringers have holes in the tops, should I glass these closed?
3. I cut the deck off leaving an inch or 2 around the perimeter, but in a lot of areas the glass is cracked, broken completely off, or very thin and weak. should I just cut it all off and fillet and tab directly to gunnels?
4. what is an easy way to remove the bonding putty from the top of the stringers, I used a power scraper this morning and didn't get very far, any suggestions?
Thanks
Jorge

1.  If you are positive the foam is dry, I would leave it in.  But you must be sure that you completely seal your new sole and every other potential pathway to the foam.  The old foam was more likely to absorb water than the new closed cell foam.  I'm not sure what type of foam was used in 88.

2.  Yes, glass over the holes in the top of the stringers.  Theoretically the holes will get covered by whatever bonding putty you use to re-attach the sole, but I would err on the conservative side and glass over them.

3.  Your remaining lip should give you a nice straight edge to support your new sole.  Build the stringers up to the same height as the remaining lip, and set the new sole on top.  The additional height will help with self-bailing, and you wont have to deal with a butt joint between the new and old sole.

4.  A right angle grinder with a sanding disk (36 or 40 grit) will make quick work of the old putty.

Have fun!

How high do I raise the stringers, in other words, how much of a gap do i leave between the stringers and the bottom of the sole for bonding putty?

Assuming you are going to set the new sole on top of the remaining lip, I would build up the stringers so that they are the same height as the remaining lip.  So for example if your old sole was 3/4" thick, you would build the stringers up an additional 3/4".  Then you would spread bonding putty equally on the lip and stringers and it should give you a nice level deck.  Some people also build a slight crown in the deck (sole).  What you don't want is for there to be a low spot to collect water in the middle of the deck.

I'm hoping some 200 striper owners chime in here about the self bailing capabilities of the boat and if that amount of additional height is enough.  I say that because I am rebuilding a 22-2 flatback and I am raising the sole about 3".  These boats need the extra height due to self bailing problems, especially with heavy motors and brackets that move the COG aft a little.

Ok I have got the top of the stringers cleared of the old bonding putty. I want to raise the stringers by about 1/2 inch. I figure I'll glass plywood to the top. What exactly would be the best procedure for doing this? How do i bond the wood down and what cloth do i use to glass it in.

Hi Jorge,
Did you decide if you were going to use the lip or make a new one to set the new sole on top of?  Didn't see anything confirming the way you are doing it.

As for the wood on top of the stringers I would mix up some thickened epoxy and trowel it onto the top of the stringers and then lay the "already sealed" plywood into the putty and weight it down.  I would then use some 1208 or 1708 to cover the wood and down the sides of the stringers. If you really want to tie everything together I would scruff up the sides of the stringers and down into the hull (that is really part of the stringers) and then cover from the middle of the gap between the stringers up and over and end in the middle of the next gap.  Biax with matt doesn't like to transition around corners much so if you can clip the edges of the ply so there is no edge to go over, it'll be a smoother lam.

If the new "shims" of wood make the center of the sole slightly higher than the outside edge that is good for drainage.

When you glue down the sole to the shims I would use drywall screws to temporarily pull it down into the glue and then remove them when it has cured.  Then fill the holes and glass over the entire sole and up the liner a couple inches.

Thanks. I am going to try and put the sole on top of the Old bottom skin. the top skin is separated right at the seam in about half the sole, so I cant use it. Also there is no wood in some spots. This will put the sole at the same height as the original. My family has had this boat since new and we never had any problems with it draining, and I will be able to keep the cable trough and coffin cover. I am running conduit fore and aft for electrical connections and then foaming everything up to sole level on the outer sides of the stringers. I guess I like doing things the hard way. I will put up pictures as I go along.
