cutting up the 74' 170
« on: February 02, 2011, 09:31:04 AM »
can anyone give me some tips on were to cut and how far from side to start. im a lil worried about making that first cut. im sure there are a few rebuilds on the 170 that i can get advice from. if you have done a 170 and have a lil experience that you can pass along i would be very much happy to listen.

I took a circular saw and set it to the depth of my floor (about 3/4") and cut around the sole leaving a 2" width all the way around the edges.

should i be worried about cutting the stringers or is it not that big a deal. is the foam required, i dont keep my boat in water unless im in it. most of the time in no more than 5 to 8 feet. this i one question im worried about is there any big deal with going with a different color than the original colors. im not sure if the aqua police will show up at my house and take my aquasport pass word and clear my computer. lol     :eye:

Entirely possible...unless you have a case of beer handy, and maybe some fresh grilled shrimp...

in the morn i will pic up some miller lite and have a big shrimp or maybe oyster poboy ready for when they arrive. i just havent seen any rebuilds that stray away from the original colors and set up. i have noticed im alil younger than the average aqua owner and think the white/cream color is alil bland for me. im thinking black or midnight blue with a red stripe and yellow shadow pin behind it.

Yes, that can be an issue... just be careful when you set your saw depth.  Once you find your stringers on one end you should be able to predict where to be careful as you cut.  If you cut one it can be repaired, that's the beauty of fiberglass.

However I would not suggest cutting them up if you don't have to!

It's your boat, paint it any color you like. :thumleft:

Just remember, beauty is in the eye (and mind) of the beholder and....
There's no accounting for taste.

Through you're holding your cards a little too low when you mentioned the Miller Lite.

Good luck and post those pics when you get started.
