Well after off and on searching for the winter and spring, no luck in locating a lower unit for the 90. The $700 rebuilds became $1200 units shipped! So it looks like it might be the 115 going on it.

? The big issue is it’s about 100 pounds heavier. What should I be expecting to have to do so it rides right?

I have 2 batteries up under the console seat, a 27 deep cycle and 24 starting (about 140#). I usually fish with 2 anchors, one in the center casting deck locker and the main in a basket at the stern. I could move both forward and add more chain. That’s about all I can think of for adding some bow weight.

? Would the addition of smart tabs offset any foreseen ride issues?

Sorry to hear that. At rest the boat will sit deeper in the water in the aft and your scuppers will be more under water especially if you walk to the aft. As for ride I think it will be fine. You might investigate a Doel-fin to lift the back of the boat up and keeping you on plane at lower speed.
I guess my big concern would be when the boat is on the mooring and it rains, the scuppers will be under so it won't self bail.

Are you back in Maine?  There's someone advertising 2 90 Yam lower units on NH Craigslist.  https://nh.craigslist.org/bpo/d/plaistow-2-yamaha-90-lower-units-may/7129031338.html

Not sure if you're up for travel and unknown condition...

Thanks, just messaged him. For that price I’d be there in the morning! If not we’re in the process of building a four stroke case for it.

I shot down there this morning and grabbed 2 cases (lower units). One has a stuck carrier and is probably useless, unless I split it and take the gears and driveshaft out of it. The other is promising, between mine and this one I should be able to build a nice lower unit. Amazingly mine was still holding oil
Thanks for the heads up :thumleft:

No problem, sooner or later, Craigslist usually comes through.  I was eying a 120 Johnson for a lower unit, guy wants $100 for the whole motor with a blown piston.  He swears it's a 25", but it looks like a 20" which is what I need if I want a spare laying around.  Mine is fine as far as I know...  have only heard it run, never seen it in gear.

Umecheme, that guy is a buddy of mine and lives just down island of me (if it’s the one I’m thinking about in Harpswell). I can take a look next time I am over there. I was out on the water with him today.

Honestly he would probably GIVE you the motor if he knew it was going to a good home haha.

Well of course with 50 other need to do projects around the house, I had to tear into the stuck case. They broke and cut the prop shaft carrier and sliced the case where the oil seal is with a grinder. All to get the stuck carrier out??? I soaked it for a few hours and put al little heat to it a few times. Then put my old prop on it with a few hardwood shims under it and walked the nut to it with the driver. Pop! It’s out, some people’s kids. Now to the welder for a little Filling of the grinder cut and I have 2 useable cases, driveshafts, gears, and shift linkages. Might as well build 2 new lowers and have one on hand for anymore of that hard water I might find

Awesome, glad they are going to come together!

I grew up in coastal NC and have only been in Maine a few years, so these weird things called  “rocks” still scare the hell out of me! At least now you have a spare.

Well finally got some time to get the boat up and running. After working on the lower unit for most of the day, I finally got a sea trial in this afternoon at 4:30, what a long day. Now I know my way through a case pretty good, had it off and on about 7 times. Finally got all the same era parts in one case and the shifting adjusted properly.
Coffin lid, center and starboard cast deck lids are re-cored and it’s ready to fish another season.

After a pretty wet ride home last Sunday,SW gusting 20, I decided it was time to put the spray rails on.

Not crazy about the look now but man what a dry ride! Hammered it through some various wakes and even when I plowed into the bottom of one, no spray inside.
