Title: Aquasport 19-1 Osprey rebuild begins
Post by: Defender on January 03, 2012, 10:23:19 PM
Hi everyone so the weather in PA has turn cold I mean freezing cold todays high 13 degrees so I have torn the floor and the foam that is not in the stringers out of the boat.  Luckly she fits in my heated garage.

Know the fun begins I removed some samples of foam out of the hole they used to fill the stringers and found between 1/2 and 1 inch of complete water saturation and all the foam to be damp any advise on drying the foam or full removal of the foam. Recomedations for replacement foam, would you foam the whole underdeck Aquasport only foamed the stringers and 2 of the 4 center sections and non of the outer sections.

Second question the floor was only 3/8" thick exet for the casting platform was 1/2" stay should I go to half inch all around and syn core recomendations

Third gas tank above or below deck

Thanks for the help I sure I will need lots of suport

We welcome you here Defender!  Thanks for your membership.

Cut off the very tops of the stringers in a workmanlike fashion with regard to the rebuild to come. Dig out ALL of the wet foam. Allow the stringers to dry thoroughly at this point. Get the inside of the stringers clean and dry. Leave her inside.

What year is she?

Your current floor is 1/2 inch plywood, glassed both sides. You will receive good advice on replacement.

Your new tank will go beneath the floor, between the stringers. Here too you will also receive good advice.

Welcome!

Four to six pound density closed-cell pourable foam should work nicely. Watch it tho...a little goes a long way.

Try and get her pretty level before the pour :thumright:

Your pics can be up to 800x600.  The you copy the "IMG" code - typically the only one showing under each pic, then paste that into the post and your pic will appear.

Your about right where I am in my rebuild, I used an angle grinder with a metal cutoff blade (thin) and cut the tops of the stringers about 3/4 inch down, this let me be under the top edge of foam a little bit, cut it all the way aroun then just lightly pried it off..used a sharpshooter shovel to remove foam, fit in stringers real well..your side pieces may be a little more involved, but whatever way you do it just make it easy to reglass the stringer lid back on, since I will raising my floor 3/4 in I am raising top height of stringers the same....good luck, she'll be a sharp boat when your done..

New foam is curing time to close up the stingers and start the floor.

Anyone have any opions on if I should pull the gunnel liner and attach my new floor right to the hull or leave it and glass the floor into the gunnel. Planning on makeing the floor from 1/2" coosa bluewater 26 and biaxle 2 layers of 1708 (17 oz DB w .75 oz. mat) and 2 layers of 7781 (8.9 oz. 0/90 glass) on the top and one of each on the bottom

well pulling th eliner and glassing to the hull would be the best, strongest way. youll have some work to do where the cap meets the transom when you cut it off. if youre dead set on putting the liner back in, you could tab it back to the floor after its in. id just put one layer of 1708 top n bottom, with your layer of cloth over the biax on top. wet on wet if you can...

Good advice. If you do go back with the old liner (a money saver) make sure that you have plenty of gunnel support. As has been pointed out....the old teak rodholders were basically the only gunnel (deck cap) support on that long run.

If you want to avoid knees...as shown on the recent pics here of the Seamark 21....you can glass-in blocks at the liner top beneath the gunnels.

If you choose this method....glue the liner to the hull side with 5200. Done deal, very strong. Prevents chatter too.

Defender,

I also have a 19-1 with the same front platform and hatch setup. Are you going to rebuild yours in the same fashion it was? If not, would you be interested in selling the hatches for the front? I need a right side replacement mine rotted and cracked in half.

Thanks!

lookin good.
I've got the same boat, same issues, nice little project.
did you leave any room around the poly fuel tank for expansion?
Title: Re: Aquasport 19-1 Osprey rebuild begins
Post by: Defender on March 20, 2016, 06:18:52 PM
The tank only touches on the bottom corners and will have clips on top to lock it in. So yes it has room to expend plus it's vented so expansion should be minimal.

Its the chemical reaction with the gas that makes it expand.
