Please help,
I re-filled the container but have no steering. Will be bleeding the lines once I figure out how.
Not sure where to order a replacement seal.

Thanks for the link.
I'm going to give that a try once I get to the boat again in 7 days.
Do you know of anywhere that has seals and such for this boat helm?
The mechanic working on it says there's nothing he can do. Makes no sense.
I have a hard time believing that the whole steering assembly has to be changed out because of a seal.
I'm heading fishing no matter what. Shoe laces tied to the rudder if I have to. Hydraulics would be better.
Thanks again!

I'm confused.
Where/what "seal (s)" are you reffering to?

Helm seal?

Good luck.

The oil was leaking down the front of the outter console just below the steering column.
Opening the panel there was no indication of a leak.
I moored her and had a mechanic go to fix it, so until I return next Thursday I have no idea.
He kept saying the inner seal is damaged and the shaft was marred.
This guy is new in town, as my first invoice from him was 001 so I'm guessing he's out to lunch.
I can do the repairs but live about 800miles from the boat. I'll get him to send pics tomorrow.
Thanks for helping me out with this,
Oh and Hi, I'm Rod.

Ho Rod,
I'm not sure what type of steering you have but my Seastar hydraulic steering on my 230 was doing the same thing and it ended up being a front shaft seal - an easy fix.

My 290 has a Hynautic H-50 series helm and currently has the same leak, but apparently not as bad, because I still have steering.  It's on my list of things to do (replace that front shaft seal).

If I can help by answering questions from my boat, which is closer than 800 miles away, let me know.

Hi, thanks in advance for taking some time to help me with this.
I've called Teleflex about this problem but they are unsure of the proper "kit" to send
Do you know somewhere that has dealt with this type of problem? Mariana repair perhaps?
At this point, I'd buy a couple of each just to make sure I get the right one but a huge waste.
Thanks,
Rod

Rod,
The first thing to do is to determine whether you have a Teleflex helm pump or a Hynautic.  Even though Teleflex now owns Hynautic, older Hynautic helm parts can be hard to come by.  That being said, if seal kits are available, it's not that hard of a job.  But if they aren't, a new helm pump isn't that expensive, and easy to replace.  The standard Seastar 5271 helm pump will run you around $325 new, or go on ebay, can find them cheaper.

That's it. Hynautic.
Seal or helm either or at this point.
Where would a person find a full helm.

Rod,
If it's standard 2-line helm (port and starboard hoses, no pressurized accumulator), just search ebay in boat parts under steering and controls.  A Teleflex seastar helm is compatable with your steering system.

The 5271 is the most common, 1.7 cu. in. displacement.  The way Teleflex helms are designated, the higher the displacement (rated in cubic inches), the less turns lock to lock, but the more steering effort.  Lower displacements, more turns, less steering effort...

I bet they get a ton of helms w/ wheels on them b/c the corrosion between the dissimilar metals causes them to marry. I've tried PB and map torching to no avail on some occasions. That is why I am a huge fan of the Uflex helms.

Eugene,
Had to actually rent a wheel puller for this last wheel...

But she got a nice new wheel...
