Making bunks for trailer question
« on: June 05, 2010, 01:56:03 PM »
I'm coverting the trailer for a 1987 Ospery 222 from roller to bunk.
I'm using 4"x 8"x10' lumber.
What would be the best angle to have on the bunk for best contact on the hull?
The bunk will be in a vertical position.

Thanks,

Kedd

kedd,
Match the angle of the bunks to the deadrise of the hull.  The key is to have the bunks directly under the stringers...

Kedd,
Your deadrise obviously becomes steeper as you go forward, but fully 70% of the boats weight is in the aft 1/3 or the boat, especially with a CC.

I just use the swivel top bunk brackets and leave them finger tight until the boat is loaded, then tighten them down.  (lazy man's way)

Just want a stable platform to cut the deck out and glass stringers.
I know blocking it would be better, but the driveway is not an option.

Cypress is the wood of choice for bunks, and if you use Slik-Sticks you don't need to put carpet on the bunks.

We've got enough of that down here...

"Homeowners Association" affliction is not the problem, I'm lucky with the property we have.
Driveway is just too steep, but the yard is nice and level.

Don't forget to support the bunks in only two places so the bunks can flex to match the hull curve.  Over time they will warp to match.  They can't warp if they are bolted down solidly in 3-4 places.

If the boat hull is making the bunks warp, its a good bet that the warped area in between the two support points aren't really supporting anything. They may be touching the hull so it looks like its supporting weight but... it would just deflect the bunks when weight was applied.

I wouldn't use any kind of bunk that is going to deflect with the weight of the boat on it. Should be a large timber, 4x8, 4x10, etc.

Check out the owens and sons link for pics. They make some of the nicest trailers around.
