Hello to all,

I am currently in the process of obtaining a 1980 24'6" aquasport with twin 200 Mainers. The only down side to it is that the transom has to be rebuilt. Could some one please shed some light on this (painless...hehe) task. Not very familiar with accessing the transom to do this kind of work. And also if possible what to use in the rebuild, composite or wood....pros and cons.

The transom rebuild job has been perhaps the most discussed rebuild topic on the forum; soggy stringers being right up there too.

 When you have a couple of hours to spare, review the past posts in this forum.  There is a wealth of info.  Also lots of different approaches with pros & cons regarding materials, costs & techniques.  The picture gallery will give you practically step-by-step views of some of the rebuilds done.

I was just wondering if there were any differences between the 22' and the 25', as far as the process. Also read that some of the composites have a problem with being compressed, but not really sure if it is on some of them or just all of them.

Nice boat, good price too.  For transoms it seems like the material of choice is Coosa Board.  Nidacore is used in some transoms, but I've heard of people who know shy away from it for that application.  You really can't beat good old fashioned marine ply saturated with epoxy resin.  It's cheap strong and, not that heavy.  I would probably go with marine ply for the transom, look at how long the original lasted.  The trick to making marine ply last is keeping the water out of it.  The way that is accomplished is by drilling larger holes than needed for transom penetrations, then backfilling the area with epoxy resin completely, then drilling the desired size hole in the epoxy plug you've created.  What you've done by doing this is created an epoxy sleeve for the hardware to pass through which keeps the ply endgrain from getting a chance to wick water.  Transom mounted transducers should be avoided at all costs, or mounted using the method described above.  Wherever possible, like ladders etc, make penetratons above the waterline.

Thanks for the advise Radioshop. More than likely will pick up the boat tomorrow. It seems that the transom has a little flex but not really sure if it is the core thats rotted, or that the trans got delaminated from the stringers. Most defenately will have a better idea once i actually get the boat, and will keep in mind your suggesions.

Transoms really should not flex.  If they flex, it's a harbinger of things to come, cracked gelcoat, which leads to fiberglass failure.  It could be a delamination, or rotted plywood or both.  

Also, I think the boat you bought had twin 200's.  According to the spec sheets in the sales brochures on this site, the 24.6 is only rated for 280.  Which is either one V-6 or, two V-4's.  Two V-6's may be too much, which could have caused the problem on your boat.  As usual the disclaimers on free advice apply here, but if possible check your boat mounted spec plate.

I have the exact same boat but it has an enclosed transom and a bracket for the twins hanging off of it.  I love it this way, you should think about closing the transom in if you are going to do the job, You would be amazed at the amount of space it makes available for you.

Unfortunately i did not purchase the boat, if anyone is interested in her feel free to steal her for $5000. But she does have a fair share of problems.  But did pick up a 1975 25' CC Anacapri.

Here is another picture of the boat in the water.  Cant wait to get the dang thing back.  My painter got caught up in the hurricane relief and just got back home 2 weeks ago so hopefully I will get the thing back painted some time soon.
