Min HP for Aquasport 222 sandpiper dual console?
« on: May 12, 2022, 03:53:48 PM »
Hi Everyone,

While I'm not an aquasport owner just yet, I am looking at a 1984 222 sandpiper dual console. It looks to be in great shape for the age, well cared for. It is powered by a 130HP Honda four stroke. Is that enough HP for this hull? I'm not looking to win any races, but want to know that it will at least plane and perform reasonbly with a decent load of passengers and/or gear. My primary uses will be inshore coastal fishing and family cruising through the tidal river out to local beaches along the coast. For beach trips, I imagine an occasional passenger load of 4 adults/4 kids (my wife and two kids, plus another couple and kids). Is that capacity reasonble every now and then on this boat?

Beyond the HP question, I welcome any and all thoughts and experiences (warnings?) you might have about this model.

Thanks!

Well to start, the Sandpiper (love that name) shares the same hull as the 222 CCP but has the "walkthrough" cap.
My 84 CCP came from the factory with a 185hp two stroke Jonnyrude motor. That stated, the usual re-power was a 200hp two stroke.

To compare, my current 210 weighs more and has a deeper draft than the CCP and I re-powered with a 150hp four stroke Yamaha. It works very well and would have pushed my CCP (IMHO) just as well as the older 200hp two stroke.

All that stated, I know nothing about Honda outboards so I really can't say the 130 won't push it but I would want at least a 150hp or a 200 if you can find one. I believe listed capacity of that hull is 9 people. Still the best way to find out is to sea trial the boat. That should give you a starting point. The CCP hull is very stout. You should look/listen for decay in the transom and soft/spongy areas of the deck adjacent to hatches. The fuel tank, if original, will likely need replacing. A good family cruiser with a great name.

Good luck. :thumright:

I'll second the Yamaha 150 4 stroke. My CCP 222 is just fine with that on the back. Can't speak to the Honda.
