Oil on motor
« on: November 26, 2008, 04:54:23 PM »
Anyone know what is causing oil to leak  out of the motor from the lower cowling. This is a 1981 Johnson 175.  Let me know what ya'll think.

I'm not sure if they had VRO back then.  If they did, then I'd check the tank and connection.  If not, what ratio of gas to oil mixture you using?  50:1?

Seems normal to have a little fuel/oil mixture dripping out of the carbs.  Haven't seen it that black before though.  Maybe try some "purple stuff" to clean it off and then watch it.

When I picked up the boat there was no sign of this a couple of weeks ago(then again it hadn't been run in a few years) This is a basic 2 stroke that I mixed 50:1 on the first run and 45:1 on the second due to the excessive smoke(even for a two stroke).  I am open to options here. There are not any sign of the oil near the carbs or in the upper cowling.

Any smoke coming out of the top area of the motor? A lot of times the water passages will get corroded out and let exhaust and water exit where its not supposed to. Check for corrosion under the hood areas, also pull the spark plugs and check them out.

I have seen a little smoke out of the top everyonce in a while, thought that it was just the way the smoke was blowing around with the motion /wind.  The plugs show a little sign of extra oil but nothin crazy.  Are there seals under the lower cowling?

What slippery73 said. Looks like oil residue from an exhaust leak.

Could also be the lower crankshaft seal.  Can you get those two pieces of bottom cowling off so you can get a look at the base of the powerhead?
