1971 170 with 20" late 90's 90/115 Johnson, no idea what prop, 40mph, NOT self bailing. (I wrote 90/115 because the decals say 115 and that is what I was told by the rebuilder it was BUT the marina mech told me it shows 90 on the motor head)
1992 230 Explorer with 25" '91 Yamaha 250, Mirage prop (no idea pitch/size), 40mph, self-bailing.

1971 "170" with 115 Johnson (It's usable but not 100% finished)

I have a 1972 170 with an 1992 evinrude 90 with a 20" shaft.  Its on a jackplate, with a 17" pitch prop I can run 38 mph and 5200 rpm.  Not self bailing.  Stupid heavy engine and jackplate.

with my 200 osprey 112 hp jonnyrude 25 inch shaft , i average 38-39 mph at 54-5600 rpm. ive seen almost 43 mph (42.7 gps) going with a 20 knot wind trimmed sky high and turning 5800 rpm both with a 12 x17 3 blade stainless prop. both runs, 1 person on board, empty live-wells and 6 gallons of fuel. i havent been able to test my new 4 blade prop, its got a little more cup and rake to it.

eventually i want to repower to a 150 or 200 merc

1980 22-2CCP with 1987 Merc 200 Black Max running 14x19 Quicksilver HighFive prop.  CCPs are self-bailers through side outlets, not out the back like Ospreys.  Top speed for Gone Fission is 43 @ 5300 RPM, trimmed out.  Sweet spot is 25-30 MPH, where she is over 3 MPG and handles chop and corners very well.  Fuel economy and performance numbers are shown on this chart:

Very interesting hearing all these numbers. I actually have not been out on the water since I've owned my 19-6. It has a 2001 225 HP yamaha vmax ox66. Bad ass motor, everyone I know loves it. It currently has a 4 blade prop on it. It is a 20" shaft on a portalift. I was told by the previous owner that it'd hit 53 mph, and he said that this boat would hop out of the water with a crazy holeshot. That perfmance number was based as well with 400 lbs of wet stringer foam, waterlogged transom etc. Im hoping that i'll get a little bit better performance when I redo everything. We shall see, she should fly!

You'll need every one of them too,
With that transom you built

1976 AS 170, 1995 Nissan/Tohatsu 90 hp,  15 Pitch SS prop, 38 mph at 5400 rpm, will not self bail.  Have smart Tabs installed.  Between the tabs and the 15 pitch prop, has a hole shot that will throw you out of the back of the boat.  Adding a CMC Jackplate this week.

1977 170 Aquasport, 2007 Evinrude 90 hp E-Tec 20" Shaft, 13-1/4" x 17" 3-Blade SS Stilleto Advantage I Prop.
38 mph on GPS @ 5400 rpm
40 mph on GPS @ 5550 rpm trimmed, flat water (a little unstable)

With the 17" prop the time to plane is almost instant. I have tried a 19" and a 21" prop and both topped out over 42 mph but only maxed out the RPMs in the 4800 range. The boat does NOT self bail, it never did since day 1.

looks like aquasports average in the 35-45mph range according to the thread so far. I heard that these boats are not made for high speeds, that they get a bit unstable. is that true? i read that on THT. should i have a concern with this 225 hanging off the back? i can tell you when its time to redo these stringers ill be raising them a solid 2-3 inches so it will self bail! im also considering having them bail out the side as well

Chris,
You're doing a bang up job on your rebuild but......

You intend to hang a modern 225hp outboard on a 37 year old hull design that was what, rated for around 185hp back in 73?
As far as being unstable at high speeds, yes I'd be surprised if they were not. :o

Let's think about it like this.
Power boat racing. Designed to go VERY fast. They can get unstable too.
Now take a boat designed to be fish friendly, ride fairly well (for the time), pushed by an hp motor rated at the head and to be affordable to the average guy.

They never designed them to go 60 mph, but with today's power plants the old gal probably can.

From the looks of things, your transom will hold that beast but she may get squirrelly. :compress:

Enjoy the ride. :thumright:

Capt. Bob,

Very well put :!: I am guessing that the boat when I redo it, will run approx 50mph if im lucky. This will be quite a heavy boat when I am done. I have a full flats tower with the floor at 7' 2" tall, 40 gal livewell, 6 optima batteries, 50+ gal fuel tank etc. it will be a battleship!

1973, 19-6 with a 1990 140 evinrude with a 20" shaft she runs 45@ 5,500 rpms and 48@ 6,200
And is self-bailing. And it's you can't have speed without the factor of the a$$ walking around on any (smaller) speed boat its the nature of having the whole boat out of the water.
