reno pic update
« on: July 25, 2010, 01:57:53 AM »
Im not as far along as I would like to be ran into many snags. I think I can still get it done with some time to play on it before I head back home. We will see.  Id resize the pic and put them in but not at this time.

Just a few observations.

One the stringers were never sealed to the hull under the stern cross member. Leaving a 6" x 1" gap, in the lowest part of the boat, into the stringer foam and WOOD.

Did I say wood! yes another point.  There were 1/4 x 8 " pieces of plywood on the inside of the inner part of the both stringers. With only 1 bad mat glass coating. Yes stringers wood and foam were soaked.

Point 3, as you might notice in some of the early pics of the stringers there is a white substance on the top. Some patterns are circles. Well the stringers were cut to have the foam poured in them. Instead of glassing it in they used a white cement like substance. Well all the holes were coverd in it but the one that was left on coverd just a hole and foam.

Lastly we had noticed over the years a flex in the boat in the bow port area.  There was a glassed 4"x 1/2" plywood cross member that was the only support between stringers. The port side had seperated from the stringer.

On the good side looks like the transome is solid. I am still putting an aluminum cap and plate on it just because its a good idea and the guy next to me at the marina gave me one! Slight alterations only to fit it.

All items are being rectified in the rebuild.

I didn't see the year of this boat - is that a 1x4 front and back?

Its a 17' 1975. I don't know what you mean by 1 x 4? Yea the work space is great. Its starting to fill up though. I guess word has spread that this marina is cheeper by $3.00 per day. The over head coverage makes it really nice. The sun hits the transom at around 3pm where it sits, but I can move it if I work late.

Today I got 90 % of the deck cut out and resinen up the inside of the stringers. Tomorrow they get foam and glass.  If time permits I will run the conduit and make the new cross members.

7 days left till I miss my deadline. Wish me luck.

I don't know what I saw in the back but under where the casting deck ended it looks like some kind of wood going across the boat.

I know what you are talking about. It was a 1/2 inch peice of plywood about 4 inches wide that was glassed and then strung across and epoxied into notches in the stringers.  The port side had come loose of the stringer notch.Causing a softness in the boat while taking waves from that side. I plan on replacing that system with one like the stern cross member.

Note today was productive.
One stringer foamed up. 6 batches. 24oz of each 1/1 ratio.  I had to make them in 8 oz batches because I have never used it before.  Now that I know how much I need I am going to try bigger batches.

While I was waiting for the foam. I got the stringer patches in place. I also cut and layed out all the conduit. I will glue once the I finish the stringers.

Tomorrow is another day. I will get some pics.

hasta
