How many hours on four stroke?
« on: May 26, 2005, 10:38:50 AM »
Hi guys,
Does anybody have any idea how many hours you can put on a four stroke under normal (and maintenance)  use before you have to rebuild?
Thanks.

My feeling is if you change the oil/filter as per manufacture instructions it will last you the same amount of time your car engine would if you did the same.            That's if you don't run it wide open all the time.
I have a 2003 140 hp Suzuki 4-stroke and my plan is to have it buried with me.
4- stroke's and 2- strokes are completely different from a longevity point of view.

Well the reason for asking is to see if it is worth it to buy a used 4 stroke or dish out the extra shells and buy a new one.

I would not expect 4 stroke outboard to last any longer than an equivalent 2 stroke.  Keep in mind that while your 4 stroke auto engine rarely exceeds 3000 RPMs, your 4 stroke outboard will be routinely run at ~ 6000 RPM.

Yeah, my calculation for an equivalent between hours and miles would be:

100,000 miles @ 50mph average @ 2500RPM for a car = 2,000 hrs or 300 million revolutions.

300,000,000/4,200 rpm cruise=1200 hours in round numbers, more or less.

This opinion is like most and only worth about $0.02.

I have a guide service and now have close to 800 hrs on a 140 4 Stroke Suzuki 2003.  I maintain the motor myself and it has not see the dealer except for the required 20 hour service. No failures, cranks and runs like the day I bought it. I usually run it around 4000 rpm but do run it up to 5800 now and then on the advice of the dealer. They told me Suzuki said not to baby it.  They also told me they were doing normal service on a smaller one for a marina in Steinhatchee that was on rental, which has close to 3000 hours with out a failure.
I have a new 2005 140 waiting for me to finish my 22-2.
