Aquasport production has shut down?
« on: April 28, 2005, 01:12:43 PM »
I just spoke to a friend of mine that does work for Wellcraft and he said Genmar has shut down production of the Aquasport line a week or so ago.
He said no one at Wellcraft is sure what is going on. I will try to find our more details.

That's interesting. I had noticed that there have been quite a few brand new Aquasports offered for sale on ebay by dealers. I wonder if the two things are connected somehow.

"Retooling"
« Reply #2 on: April 28, 2005, 02:00:45 PM »
I just talked to a dealer in Florida who said they're "putting the name on the shelf" and retooling all new models for 2007.  The are discontinuing production as of now and giving dealers big rebates to help move the existing boats while the rumors fly about whats happening and why.

Basically, looks like there won't be a 2006 line and the 2007s (if it happens) will be all new hulls and designs.  Looks pretty scary to me.  I felt like while talking to this guy that the reintroduction wasn't definite.  He wasn't too excited about it like you'd think he would be getting all new boats.

He said Genmar sees that while Aquasports have been traditionally geared toward the "hard-core fisherman" that times are changing and family friendly boats are more in demand.  One example he gave was the need for more heads in center consoles for ladies.  I just hope they come back strong and not with some sissy boats.

If what this dealer said was true, maybe we could give Genmar some suggestions for the retooling of the molds from things we all like about the classics.
