Generator in a 290

(1/1)

Fully_Loaded:
New to the board, just purchased an 87 290 with 240 yanmars. It currently does not have a genny and doesn't look like it ever had one. I am going to put one in and wanted to see if I could get any recommendations on best place so everything can still be serviced. I am going to be cutting the livewell out and thought about placing it on the stringers in that hole. My concern with that is the additional weight more aft but at the same time move the sound a little further from the cabin. Thoughts or pics welcome. Thanks

B-Crete:
Congratulations! Nice boat. I was going to install a generator more aft where the waste tank is and slide the tanks more forward. I had voted agents it as I opt out for a bunch of parallel 6v batteries and an inverter for the house only with stand alone traditional 12v batteries for the motors

caoin:
I have a cooler drop in just aft of the floor livewell that would be the perfect location if I was to do one. There is a 3.5-5kw that measures up perfect for the location.

GoneFission:
The catch is you will need a diesel generator - they are about 100 lbs heavier than the comparable gas generator and usually much more expensive.  Plus wiring, intake/filter, muffler, and exhaust plumbing.  There is room on a 290 but try to put the genny as far forward as possible for better balance.  Keep an eye on eBay - you can sometimes pick up a generator with low hours for a deal:  https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=diesel+marine+generator&_sacat=0

Good luck!

I haven't been on here a ton since I posted. I already have a westerbek 5kw diesel with a new motor on it. I plan on putting it in the center just after of the engines through the livewell hatch. I'm going to seal the livewell hatch and put a drain channel on it to keep the water off it
